hi so i don't know how to make music is it okay to use ai make music?

(+6)

Whether or not it's "okay" depends on you and where you're targeting your product. For example, many game jams don't allow content created with generative AI. If you're going to participate in a jam, you should check its rules to determine if it's acceptable.

On Itch, you must disclose whether your product uses this type of content, as some people don't want to buy or play content created with generative AI. I should also clarify that some people aren't interested in how the content is created; they're only interested in whether they like the final product.

To help you understand, it's similar to deciding whether to make a 2D or 3D game. Some people prefer one or the other, but it's not a right or wrong decision.

On the one hand, if you use it, some people won't touch your product for that reason. But on the other hand, if your game doesn't have good music, some people won't want to play it. So, whether or not to use AI-generated music is a decision you have to make.

(+1)

For commercially sold products? No,take a look at those on Steam that do and the negative backlash they recieve for AI usage. For free, demo or temporary purposes in gaming? It's ok and people will usually look past it to evaluate the vision of the project as a whole

(+8)

No. It is not okay to use the Internet Plagiarism Machine.

There's plenty of royalty-free stock music by actual humans who consent to you using it. Being unable to make your own music is no excuse for using the products of companies that steal the labour of everybody who has ever recorded music.

(+4)

That's the wrong question. It's not about how it is okay or not. Of course it is "okay".  /games/ai-audio

You need context for such a question. Circumstances, and what you mean with "okay".

If you ask AI haters, you will get a context free answer about AI, that boils down to the view: AI usage = evil. And further discussion would always circle back to that view.

Since you did not provide context, I shall answer for two cases.

You have a game with ai generated visual assets. Generating ai audio assets might make the style consistent with what you already have. Prompts do accept language after all.

You have a hand crafted pixel game. Adding ai music is not gonna improve it. You should start with sound effects and expand from there. Is it games that need a music track, or some old style electronic melody or something like that? Try some from here and test like it feels playing your game with that. /game-assets/free/tag-8-bit/tag-music/tag-no-ai . If you think you need actual music, there are places for that too. The drawback is, that there will be several games using the same music.

"If you are already using the Internet Plagiarism Machine for 'artwork', it is morally acceptable to also use it for 'music' because of consistency" sure is one of the takes of all time.

(+2)

Frankly I'd rather you didn't use music at all.  Having to pause my CD just because I'm playing a game is annoying.  But if you feel the need to add music to your game, free stock music isn't hard to find, and there are even plenty of composers willing to work for free.

"If you are already using the Internet Plagiarism Machine for 'artwork', it is morally acceptable to also use it for 'music' because of consistency" sure is one of the takes of all time.

That was not meant in that way and I even explained how I meant it. But thanks for proving my point, that discussion is not possible with ai haters. All boils down to moral and how evil ai is.

The kernel of truth of your quoted misrepesentation of my statement is, yes, if a project already has ai, use of additonal ai will not matter for people like you, since any ai will make you avoid the game.

But my actual point was, if you used a prompt to generate visuals, you can use similar prompts to generate audio and have consistent style. Some 8bit retro style does not fit with a high resolution 3d game and so on.

Also, do not reply to my posts, while having me blocked. It's rude.

When it comes to gen AI, most people have a problem with  the training data being taken/stolen from artists without asking and the high energy consumption and its environmental effect. There are (very few) AI music generators that are trained on an opt-in basis, mostly solving the first issue. But the high energy consumption still remains.

(+1)

... as does the issue of the output being an empty imitation without a shred of intent, and generally sounding horrible.

(+1)

I do not know about music ai generators. But running something like stable diffusion on your local machine does not require any more energy than running a game does.

And it would calculate an image every few seconds. Rendering complex images in a ray tracer would take hundreds of times more time than that. So any energy argument would hit ray tracing and playing games as well. Playing games even harder.

Where the energy consumption really is a huge isssue, is crypto currency. That is literally bragging how much energy you wasted to calculate  an inane math problem.

For something like developing a game or a game's music, the driving factors for decisions would include how potential players would accept it. And many people prefer traditional assets. And some even hate anything ai, wether their specific arguments are flawed or not, does not matter.

An ai hater probably would not touch a game with ai made assets, even if those assets were generated with a model that is 100% consented material and run locally on a low energy device. The same way a vegan probably would not eat carrion or wear shoes made out of said carrion's hide.

(1 edit)

no its not okay, generative ai is terrible, especially if you have the tools or can find them at your fingertips. many people would not play the game if contains ai as well so it's safer to just find some royalty-free music or hire a music composer that offers unpaid (free) or paid services!

thank you for your feedback but can I ask if anyone want to you can make so music for the game you don't have too if you do you will have your name in the game I need something for a graveyard forest desert and a hot place and anything else you don't have too if you do thank you very much :)

I recommend asking for help in the subforum dedicated to that, since more people involved in music creation will read it.

You can also find people offering their services there.

I didn't understand your irony.

In that section of the forum, there are people offering and asking for help (art, music, programming, etc.), both free and paid, so I can't see where your criticism lies.

(1 edit)

free aint free you have licenss you cant make it the way you really want and free pieces are  for gamers like an assetflip the problem with these things they are great for beginning jams, but we all want to someday make a stable income through games, and if you have multiple licesnse things can get tricky easly i dont say that ai ist the solution, but in this case you gave at least a tipp but in the end you have to do a compriomise in the parts of gamedesign you cant do now, and this makes it misleading, and if you comprare paying an artists ur paying a month of music ai is might be the way to supportr the artist but if you want to create a game alone fast and mostly like you envision, you will have to look what your budget is, for not just music, and what you can becaue tell me one guy can do any part of gamedesign in a way ppl would call aaa, but as indie you will or no if you have enough time and stable income on this price difference, its economy sadly and if you are new and dont anything about licensing you can get yourself into serious trouble .....real story the red cross sued a german gamecompany for using the REDCROSS as health system.....feel free to goole, and this is of course not relevant but this company made their first positive budget for a team and where money is they will strike and economically you would want to have not only less and less money because you have to live and eat, it migfht sound dramatic, but what else is the choice, ppl dont pay for game if no youtube or publisher has your back, the quality is irrelevant becasue if you dont hear about the quality ? its lke a deathsprial, and i see this more and more a beginnners cant get extra confused if they ask such quastions and you dont give them the full pircture, not especially your post, but this can create pain, you maybe wont ever see or hear, but ppl that start also want this becasue the love games and to create games, but games priced at ONE dollar show you that ppl dont like paying for our love......peace <3

and you are right my post was shit i deleted it im sorry this is my point thx <3

I think you're overthinking this (my commentary).
The guy asked for help with a music issue, and I simply told him he's better off getting help through the link I gave him than by asking here. That's all.

As for things like "licenses need to be read carefully" or "the costs of hiring a professional artist can be very high," etc., I agree with you. But I don't think those are the point of the conversation, and while you have some valid points, it would be better to elaborate on them constructively so the person who asked the original question can receive meaningful feedback.

EDIT:

and you are right my post was shit i deleted it im sorry this is my point thx

I replied before reading this.

As I mentioned before, I think you have valid points, but you should address them to the original creator. I expressed my general opinion on the topic above. Here, I was simply pointing out where it's easier to find help if they want to work with someone.

For my part, there's no problem. I've also been there—annoyed about something and ending up saying things that I later realize weren't entirely correct, so it's all good ;)

Yeah, it鈥檚 fine, but if you鈥檙e just hitting generate and calling it art, don鈥檛 expect people to take you seriously.

Deleted 89 days ago

I don't know why you would use computer generated music, there is so much composers willing to make music for games !

Personally, if I didn't know how to make music, I would learn or hire someone who does know how to make music.   AI is theft in my opinion.

Go talk to that piece of bread, then. Go ahead. Be my guest.

Deleted 89 days ago

You said right in your first paragraph "I鈥檇 rather try to teach a loaf of bread about open鈥憁indedness, tolerance, and respect — which, sadly, sometimes feels easier."

And I would very much appreciate if you could just go and do that, mate. Cheers <3

ai sucks so no alr goodbye

There's always people willing to make music for little to no money. No matter what you think about the ethics of using ai music it will turn out like trash. People will complain about the music in your games if you use ai so best to either not have any music, learn to make your own music (highly recommend it's very fun once you get the hang of it), or just hire someone/get a volunteer.
