Description
Forging the Astral Lance and Wielding the Astral Lance are original video game music compositions for the fictional video game "Aradhana's Weapon: The Astral Lance", written as part of KaleOverlord's Impressions S4 Melody Jam. The fictional video game is a turn-based strategy game in which the player (Aradhana) must craft their star-forged Weapon of Legend and take down the Astro Destroyers.

In the spirit of this jam, I wrote two pieces which use the same melodies. I tried to focus on the idea of developing the same melody for different contexts and seeing how people can latch onto the same musical idea in different settings. The first track "Forging the Astral Lance", would be a slower scene in the game, a more reflective piece as the character builds their legendary weapon. This track uses super simple melodies and also features me singing a comped backing vocal drone.

The second track, "Wielding the Astral Blade" is intended to be a definitive battle sequence in which the player is taking on the Astro Destroyers' opening boss. I chose to do a battle theme, as I feel that although moving and emotive melodies have their place among the best, some of the best and most memorable melodies are actually heard in upbeat pieces across the likes of Pokemon or Octopath Traveller - I often find the melodies I remember the best are the ones that feel evoke action and agency. Also, this track is slightly quieter overall than the first track as I had to rush the Master.

Hope you enjoy!

Big shoutout to Aradhana Binani for creating the OST artwork!!

Hi! Thanks for the comments on my track and thanks for your submission. I am going to try and be as fair as possible here, but many of my comments are just gonna be things I really vibe with considering you picked a sound palette I totally get down with.  I think your mix is solid and you have two compositions that feel connected in ideas, but still have different modes, functions, and emotions. I don't know if you tried this while composing "Forging the Astral Lance" but I think it might have been great to hear the attack of the voices we get at the start of the track hitting some key downbeats later on in the track, just a thought! Thanks for making these tracks and I really enjoyed the listen!

Veryyyyy nice man! I resonate with this a ton! Actually such a banger, another favorite among the submissions. Wielding the Astral Lance is such a banger. Any chance you'd wanna work together on a future composing jam? I really mess with your style

Both tracks are really nice. The melody in Forging the Astral Lance is very pleasant, and Wielding the Astral Lance is cool as well, with a more urgent feel that I really like. There are some interesting ideas in both versions, and the different layers work well together :)

Thanks Luna, appreciate the lovely comments!

Submitting multiple tracks that develop the same themes is a cool idea, we get to hear how the melodies you came up with works in different contexts. I like both of the tracks a lot, and the overall electronic scifi vibe works really well. This is a small detail but I also appreciate the battle theme sounds loopable!

There is a strong focus on melody here,

Melody Clarity 4/5

I think the melody work overall is very clear, but the very first melody on the first track (at around 0:41) feels a bit hard to grasp. I wish I had more time to analyze it properly to put this into words, but the phrases are pretty long and kind of trail off instead of having a clear arc. It works a bit better in the battle theme but the same problem does kind of persist. I still kind of like it though?

But then the second melody, which is also the main melody in the battle theme, is super good!

Melody Impact 4/5

The melodies, especially the second melody, are memorable and pack emotion. I think these could as well be important themes in an actual video game.

Composition 5/5

I like how you split this in two, and both tracks do their job well. The second track has some more intricate work regarding harmony and arrangement but it all works. There is some work you could do in terms of production, like beef up the drums and low end in the second track, but I won't dock points for that as it's not a relevant category this time around.

Listenability 5/5

Absolutely pleasant listens, both tracks! Would not mind playing a game with a soundtrack like this.

Correlation to Theme 3/5

I can kind of see the first track being a "weapon forging" theme, but I wouldn't necessarily think that without your description. The second track, being a battle theme, has little to do with the theme of the jam imo. However, you did really focus on the melody here which is also an important theme, maybe even more so than the weapon and painting related ideas.

Good work! Definitely soundtrack material, and both tracks sounded consistent and have personality. It's easy to imagine a full soundtrack with this kind of style. Also small thing, the vocal drone in the first track was super cool!

Yo Kurkku, there's a lot you've said which is amazing so let me try to break down the response. First off I'm super thankful for your detailed response and appreciate it a lot! Second, I'm very glad you noticed some very intentional elements like the development of the melody as themes across multiple tracks, that the second track is loopable, and also the vocal drone. In terms of your overall responses to each section, totally get where you come from on the comments. I think overall the elements I'd see to improve are in the mix of the second, it was definitely rushed and I know that I'd want a lot of elements to feel fuller and more weighted, especially the drums which are pretty bare. I also get what you mean about some melodies trailing off. I think this was a very intentional effect in track 1 actually - it's supposed to be like foreshadowing vibes, but in track 2 I think compositionally they don't always get the breathing time to have a full arc like u said. I try not to be too literal with themes from these jams too, like, I took the idea of a forge and a weapon of legend rather than the the actual picture to come to my interpretation of the theme, and I felt like a battle theme represented not just the forgery of a weapon but the weapon's use as well. Thanks so much for the comments though Kurkku, very much appreciate you communicating your thoughts so well to me - lots to take onboard!

Great idea making a leitmotif kind of thing, the sounds and vibe fit perfectly to an astral weapon. I feel that there is a big discrepancy in the low end between the two tracks, either tone down that in the first track, or increase it in the other one, or do both XD. Was waiting for a big burst of low energy in the second one, it felt a bit thin, it might also be a bit quieter.

Developer

Yo Deadric thanks so much for the comment. Tried hard to have that leitmotif effect for a melody jam i thought it would work, so im happy u appreciate that. I get what you're saying - I wanted the first track to feel heavier naturally than the second so i think thats why i intended for the low end to be so prominent. However, I did rush the second track as time was super tight for me which meant it wasn't exactly as I wanted, so I also agree that better balancing on the second track was required - I also didnt have time to properly master track 2 which is why it's quieter overall. Appreciate the feedback, can take it onboard, and hopefully if i can get more time i can rly focus on those bits.

That's totally fair, I too have dealt with such compromises it's just what it is.

After playing Celeste I can't stop thinking about the music from that whenever I hear piano arpeggios played in the upper register 😄

The melodies are very heroic and upbeat a bit in the 80's tradition on  the vibe side, which from remembering your other submissions you seem to have a knack for that style. Only thing that stuck out me a bit was that for a battle theme Wielding The Astral Lance felt a bit too mellow in the arrangement and didn't really give me a feeling of action/battle happening and felt more like a end credits tune to me, the track itself is great, but couldn't really feel it in the intended setting.

Just my subjective take of course, but still, good stuff!

Developer(+1)

Haha yeah the arpeggios i was also conscious of 😅 it's rly interesting you say that actually because i did base the sound for wielding around 2 tracks from crosscode which are called "Exponential Growth" and "Exponential Conclusion", they act as both like a battle theme and a credits to that same battle. So i think i was aiming for that sort of effect where it's like a battle conclusion? Glad you enjoyed though!!

I don't really have any feedback, I just wanted to say that these are cool and are a great listen.

Thanks for sharing, keep up the good work :)

Ahh that's great thanks grunt! Glad you enjoyed listening 🙏🏽

Really nice composition, but seems to have entirely shifted from the themes and artwork provided.

Developer

Thanks turtle, glad you liked the composition! I'm surprised though, what makes you say they departed from the themes provided?

Apparently there's 2 tracks... I thought they were both the same track, but different file formats for some reason LOL. I really don't pay all that much attention sometimes... In the first one, it really does like an opening scene of some sort. I also really liked the Lead Live-Pitchshift in a part of the song. For the second one, again, I have to note the Live-Pitchshifting again, since I apparently really like that sort of thing... It also does have a Space-Sortof-Vibe which makes this track even more interesting. I really like how it sounds!

Developer

Thanks very much LateNight! Awesome to hear you enjoyed the vibes of the tracks and the live pitch shifting, did a lot of the mod wheeling for those haha
