Rule Clarifications Sticky

Top level stuff:

If you have a question about the brief, try to think of the spirit of the brief first.

And remember; if you make something great and want to continue working on it after the jam, there is nothing to stop you coming back and adding words after voting has finished. A lot of questions I've been asked so far could be summarized by "if your game really needs that, you can add it after the jam".

Rules Updates so Far:

- What About Title ScreensYou will be able to submit the title of your game on the page itself. Your page doesn't need/shouldn't have a traditional "title screen", and if it does, it still needs to be wordless.

- What About Settings like Resolution etc? If you have a settings menu, it needs to be wordless. Keep in mind that it is unusual for a project of this scope to need complex settings like resolution changes or controller rebinding. If you do need settings, use sliders, icons, diagrams. If it's too challenging to achieve this without using words, simplify the game.

What About CreditsYou will be asked to list contributors and what they did when you submit the game. It is strongly recommended that all contributors who have an itch.io account are properly linked to the project, so that they are all eligible to vote on other people's projects. Your game's page can include credits of those who contributed (although you will also be asked to provide these as part of the submission process for adding the game to the jam)

What About Non-Alphanumeric Symbols? Like emoji or checkboxes. These are generally fine, but try to keep it in the spirit of the jam. We want you to practice good visual communication. For example, it's okay to use arrows in a tutorial diagram, a ✅ to represent that something is completed, or a ⚠️ to represent that a guard is in an "alerted" state. However, you might also be able to find better ways of representing these things which add more character to the game.

Are pictograms / basic non-alphanumberic symbols ok? I'm specifically thinking of a checkmark / X symbol

Submitted

i hope so, its a basic shape

Host(+3)

I think a checkbox is probably ok, but it's more in the spirit of the rules to try and find another way of indicating the same thing.

Am I understanding correctly that credits are disallowed outside the jam's submission page?

If someone stumbles upon the game from outside the jam I would still want them to know that the musician who made the soundtrack has a Soundcloud they can follow, or link to a team member's Artstation, so I would at least want to show those on the game's main page, if not in-game.

Host(+2)

That's a valid concern. I would suggest erring on the side of caution re: the rules and then going back to the project after voting and adding what you need to be there. That said, I don't think there's anything against the spirit of the rules to include the credits in the main page text, it's just that you will be asked for them in submission and I don't want people to do double work if they feel they need to write it all twice.

my brother and i want to make a game together but he doesn't have an email, can he help me with the game art, and would that count?

Host(+1)

Totally fine, as long as he's listed in the credits. Working with someone you can see IRL is often a good idea as it makes discussing ideas and playtesting easier!

Submitted

Just a clarification question, is there a maximum on team size? Is states there are rewards for up to 4 team-members. Is it safe to assume that having more than 4 is okay, or is that supposed to be the limit?

Host

You can have more that 4.

Submitted

Can you be on multiple teams?

Host

Yes.

Submitted

Is recorded gibberish audio okay? Like a recorded "blarglargbralbarbra" that might play when opening a NPC store? Or the sounds of dying enemies letting out grunts or war cries? "RAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Hyaaaaah!!!!!" kind of stuff.

Host

Yep that's fine

Submitted

I'd like to ask about making game's page which doesn't break the rule. I usually make it like this game : Sigul Signal. I describe the game, why I make it, story, control and features.

Should I omit control section for in game's page for this jam? or there are more  sections I should omit?

Host

Yes please; you can always add them back in after voting is done.

Submitted (2 edits) (+1)

I think you'd have to omit features and controls. Since the game should be self-explanatory the player should learn the features just from playing the game. And also to be safe I'd remove the "Shoot the flies to kill them or shoot balls to distract them" as you're telling the player what to do.

Submitted(+1)

Alright, I'll just mention that the game is made for this jam and mention my collaborators.

Submitted

Will you/how will you verify that people actually collaborated with the people listed in the credits section of the submission? I'm working with my brother and he doesn't have an itch account. Though he could make one if necessary.

Host

Fine, just make sure their name is on there and what they did

Submitted

And I have another question too. Our visual design would incorporate elements with Egyptian themes and therefore some hieroglyphs too in the textures. We obviously can't read hieroglyphs so it would be gibberish, but I figure thats kinda like written text although not in a traditional sense. Are those okay?

Host

Work on that basis that even if I were to say "yes" some of your judges might feel that's unfair, so I would be careful of pictograms

I'd like to ask, if we're making a short linear game and a player wins and reaches the end, would be we allowed to write "the end" along with credits and names of the people who worked on it? Or would that be prohibited? i don't want to leave the player with a blank screen and leave them wondering if something else is supposed to load/happen or not, or if the game is over

Host

Try to find a way to signal the end without using words.

Submitted

Hey, on the game jam submission page, it asks for a Cover Image - is it ok for the Cover Image to have the game's title on it?

Host

That would be ok, yep.

Submitted

Does this audio violate the spoken language rule?

Host

there’s a good chance it violates the AI one. That’s also a cover of a Billie Eilish song, so I would avoid it either way.

not super time consuming to load a real “meow” sound (not a human saying “meow”) into a midi controller and make something new; look on the “looking for teams” list for audio folks.

Submitted(+1)

Alright sounds good. I used different music.   I have a button  in my game that loads up an external YouTube video, is that allowed?

Host(+1)

sure

Submitted

Just confirming, this is the starting screen of my game:

This is acceptable right?

Submitted(+1)

Hello, due to a bug we only had in the built version, we updated our game after submission time ended.

The upload form did allow it, but we wanted to confirm if this is acceptable.

Otherwise, we would of course remove our submission from the jam. (,:

Host

if it's in, it's in

Submitted

We had a similar issue to Archi Inu above...

We submitted the game in time just under the deadline.  But the poster made a slight mistake -he ealised he actually submitted the wrong project.. (he submitted his other project from the dropdown -i dont know exactly, i've never submitted a game myself).

So he went to remove it and re-add the correct project, but then the deadline had passed. This was right at the last minute.

We do have the build up on the itch page, it should say when it was uploaded (minutes before the deadline)..

Sorry about posting/asking this in multiple places but i thought i would ask here to see if there is any chance whether we would be allowed to be included?

Worth a shot, don't ask don't get, etc.

This is our game, we have been working on it for the past 2 weeks

Thank you!

Host

it seems to have been accepted and is accepting votes, so sees like there's nothing to worry about

Submitted (1 edit)

Is it acceptable to upload different platform builds after submissions end?

Web build had issues that we didn't think we had time to fix; so, we went with Windows only. I'd like to add new versions but not if it would disqualify.

Submitted

Is it allowed to upload minor updates during the voting period?

Host

I'm pretty sure it's been locked/blocked since last week. I gave people a few day's grace to fix crashes and major blockers
