Thanks for your feedback on my submission and for your submission as well. I enjoyed your composition quite a bit. I think you nailed the vibe and I really appreciate the variations. I think you maintained a connected idea but put enough changes in instrumentation and rhythm to keep the song engaging. I also really like the atmosphere you created with the anvil hits as well as the instrumentation. Especially the percussion, I think you have a nice balance of using different instruments there. I think you have a great composition here!

Description
This piece was created for the Impressions Composing Jam Season 4: Melody Jam.
Inspired by the legend of Siegfried and Mime, it explores the growing tension between the two characters. Mime’s frustration builds as he repeatedly fails to reforge the legendary weapon, while Siegfried’s impatience and defiance continue to rise. Their conflict gradually intensifies, leading to a turning point where Siegfried takes matters into his own hands and forges the sword himself, embracing his destiny.
This is my first time participating in a music jam and it was a really valuable experience to create it. I’m looking forward to improving it after the jam. I hope you’ll still enjoy listening to it and that it manages to capture some of the spirit of the story .

Very much fits the theme! Your composition is super thorough and detailed. I see in the comments you aren't as familiar with crafting your own sound design, which is fine (your sound selection was already super solid), but hearing the same metal hit and slice foley pulled me a bit out of the scene. I think you did a good job with mixing the volume of the tracks but I think you could make some more progress in that area of things. At least maybe a bus for the foley and sfx to give them some glue and cohesion. I think you absolutely locked in on the theme and your production is super solid. Looking forward to seeing you in the next one!
Thank you so much for taking the time to listen to my track and leave such thoughtful feedback, it really means a lot to me. I truly appreciate the kind words and the advice as well, especially regarding the foley/SFX cohesion and the use of buses. Those are things I definitely want to improve on moving forward.
My background is mainly in classical piano, and I’ve only recently started exploring this side of music production and sound design. I’ve always been passionate about video game and film music though, so these jams have been a really fun way for me to explore that world.
Thanks again for the encouragement, and I’m looking forward to the next jam too! :)
That definitely makes sense! Like I was saying your composition/production is super rad! For mixing if you wanted to dig in deeper I loved reading Nathan Nyquist' books on mixing. Especially EQ, bus compression, and reverb. These were actual game changers for me, regardless though, you have great ideas!
Thanks for taking the time to listen and leave feedback, I really appreciate it. I’m glad the composition, mix, and overall theme worked for you.
That’s a fair point about the recognizable Omnisphere patches. I’m still pretty new to VSTs and sound design, so during the jam I focused more on composition and atmosphere. I’ll definitely keep your comment in mind for future tracks and try to make the sounds feel more unique next time :)
Dark and mysterious, the ambiant behind fits perfectly, your track is totally on theme, really good job ;)
this might be the most 'on theme' track out of all the submissions to me personally. it's got a very pretty melody and develops it carefully and smartly, and while a lot of other compositions also used anvil-hitting sounds (which i'm also guilty of) i feel like this one uses them like an integrated 'instrument' rather than an sfx splash, although i do think they risk overwhelming the melody as the piece continues. i'll also say that the strings could've used some more naturalistic contouring, although i appreciate that's not an easy task. overall a very solid submission
Hey, thanks so much for your comment :)
I really appreciate it, and I’m really glad you enjoyed the piece!
About the hammer/anvil, I see what you mean regarding it. It was actually a deliberate choice: I wanted it to act more like an evolving musical element, connected to Mime’s growing frustration as he fails to reforge the sword, up until his breaking point.
For the rest, especially the strings and pads, I agree they could feel more natural. I’m still quite new to working with VST instruments, so I’ll definitely come back to the track after the jam to refine that.
Thanks again for the thoughtful feedback, it really means a lot!
Love the smithy sounds you used, and the vocals are good as well. What stands out in my opinion is the ambiance and general tone of the song which makes it feel heavy and gloomy (it could be tied to the Siegfried theme you wanted to emulate? but I have no idea from where are the references from).
Hey, thanks a lot for your comment! :)
Really glad you liked the smithy sounds and the vocals!
I wasn’t really going for a specific Siegfried or Mime theme, but more the tension between them during the forging scene itself, focusing on the whole process of forging the sword.
It kind of starts with Mime’s frustration and manipulative side, then builds into the conflict between them, and finally shifts to Siegfried taking over and forging the sword himself.
I was loosely inspired by the forging scene in Siegfried from Der Ring des Nibelungen by Richard Wagner, mainly for the dramatic situation and atmosphere.
The darker, gloomy tone is definitely intentional, so I’m really happy that came through!
I really like the String Section Patches used in this soundtrack, along with the Vocals. Are the Vocals from Stock, Sample Pack, Or A Virtual Instrument? I Might actually check them out...
Cool to see another Omnisphere 3 User! For my soundtracks, I used a lot of Patches from Omnisphere's Scoring Series Libraries, along with the Vocals Collection Library. I've been meaning to look for choir patches lately, so I'll check out the EastWeast Sounds Choir Virtual Instruments... BTW though, I use Omnisphere for all my songs ever since I got that thing LOL.
Hey! Thanks for your message :)
I play piano, and I’ve always wanted to try sound libraries like this, so it’s actually my first time really diving into them.
I’ve been really enjoying Omnisphere 3 so far, it’s impressive. Same for the EastWest vocals library, I’ve only just started exploring it, but there are some really cool sounds in there. I think you’d like it too.
I can totally see why you stick with Omnisphere for everything :)
Hey, just a small update, I’ve now uploaded it to YouTube, so it’s available for streaming there if you’d prefer.
This was my first time setting up a proper streaming upload, so it took me a bit of time to figure everything out.
If you have the time and feel like it, I’d really appreciate you giving it a listen there.
Thanks again for your interest :)
Really great motif, instantly started getting ideas in my head just from hearing it.
The mood shift at 1:13 with the lyre appearing to the background was really cool!
Have to say that the whole ambience of it building to the end with the choir and lyre repeating the motif to finish, out almost felt like SIegfried finally had enough at the end and Mime is now dead 😅 just the whole feeling of suspense got me feeling like that 😄
Good work!
