If we have assets in advance, does it mean people may do any games they want having the whole month, not just 10 days?

I know the topic to be shared later, but I didnt see that topic is required. Moreover, a lot of games can be adjusted to the topic later.
My concern is that people who wants to play fair and within the dates may compete with someone who had the whole month to compete. And if they used own models - even more than month. That will end up turning game jam into showcasing what people did before.

You'll receive the assets two days before the jam starts. This is to help decide if you want to use them and if you do use them, figuring out set up and making sure you don't have any issues. That way it doesn't detract from your actual game jam time.

The theme will be announced at the jam start. While the theme in most game jams is not required, it is a voting criteria and if you don't use the theme, your overall score will go down.

Any games that are created outside the timeframe of this jam are disqualified. You can easily report a game if you find one. We rely on the help of the community to report games that don't follow the rules as we get many submissions in this jam.

Lastly, there is no overall prize for the top winner. People staying confined to the timeline and restrictions of the theme will get the most out of the jam as they work towards creating a game.

I think the question is, whether you can use the assets for other (likely commercial) games. When they are provided for free for the game jam.

Each asset has it's own license to follow.

What if we joined the mailing list more recently than two days before?

You'll get the email.

Some very nice assets!!

Is there a time of release of these? The gamejam is worldwide, please add a time it is really helpful to know.

Hello.
I have questions about these assets but also about the other ones we got during previous jams.
Even if these assets are given here for free, are they considered as "paid assets" that can't be used for jams asking only for free assets ?
In addition, outside of the jams, they still need to follow the original licence and restrictions of use, is it correct ?
Thanks in advance for the clarifications.

Submitted

yes, it is considered paid assets (unless free forever on the creator’s website). Same as FAb’s monthly giveaway freebies are paid assets any other time outside the giveaway. So it is “purchased by you” type of assets.

Assets look great. Are they only for use within the jam or other projects as cant find any info in the download folders

The Just create asset is unity only.

Any chance we could get an unreal on that?  I can only do unreal and godot lol.

Submitted

Most packs are made for or have variants for either Unreal Engine or Unity. FBX and GLTF work well with Godot by not everything is in these formats (as you noted, JustCreate isn't, so this pack is unusable for us).

I’ve never worked with UE, but as true gamedevs, we’re supposed to solve problems using logic and research, not just wait to be spoon-fed. :)

Have you tried Googling or asking an AI how to convert formats? Did you find no solution, or did you just not try? Why not?

These assets are provided "as-is" - originally made for a specific purpose, sold for money, and now generously shared with us for free. If they don't have the format for your specific engine, what do you expect? For them to go and create new files just for you? If they had them, they would have included them from the start.

Bottom line: if the files aren't right and you can't convert them, just move on and find one of the thousands of other free assets available online.

l personally don't rely on these assets at all to make my game, I can make my own models. If I find something useful in there, I'll use it, but I won't spend the 10 days on that.

It's not about being spoon-fed. We can't blame Unreal or Unity for being popular, but we could blame them for using non-standard formats to keep their assets exclusive. Its also a limitation of audience for the asset creators.

As for using AI... It's a vast topic that may be on the border of copyright infringement.

Fair enough if you prefer making your own models - that's always the best way to keep a consistent style.

However, regarding 'exclusive formats' - it's rarely a lock-in, if I may trust to the Web. Most Unity/UE packs are just wrappers for standard FBX/OBJ files. It takes minutes to extract them. Blaming engines for having their own workflows is like blaming a car for needing specific spare parts.

As for AI, I wasn't talking about generating art, but using it as a search engine or a consultant to find technical solutions (like 'how to batch export FBX from a Unity project', 'how to covern A to Z', etc). That has nothing to do with copyright, it's just efficiency.

Good luck with your models though, 10 days is a tight window!

I was worried if extracting data from a Unity of Unreal pack was a copyright or license issue regarding the format itself. If not, then let's go!

IMHO, AI is a nice and polite coworker who tries its best, but whose output we need to rework or triple-check to make it usable. Even text or technical stuff; I had bad surprises at work.

Good luck for your jam project as well!

Tell me! I sometimes spent more time to force AI finally do what I need than I would spent if did it on my own :D
Thanks! Good luck as well, fellow game dev!
