I enjoyed this a lot. There's some nice satisfaction to be had in just doing a job deliberately and competently, like power wash simulator almost. There's just a lot of positive energy radiating off this game. I'll just repeat that like others I found the pacing of the game to just be a little bit off, but my main concern was that it was possible to basically "lose" sheep by having them go behind the top of a tree and be completely concealed. Made a couple sections troublesome since I had to scan the treelines to be sure none had wondered out of view.
Mechanics were indeed intuitive and self-explanatory, but it was quite long to win without providing additional challenges. The first time you had to use sheep-eating bushes to reach more sheep was great; the second time, it was a chore, for example. There were perhaps too many sheep / too large a map.
Also, it was unclear whether sheep could re-escape from the final area; there could be some sort of notifier to ensure that. Either the gate clearly has a one-directional arrow, or the sheep would graphically change upon re-entering the containment, etc.
Very cute game :) the simple movement of the dog, the art style, and the music really connected this game and made it the cutest game that I have so far played for this jam. I do wish that there werent as many bushes as it was a bit annoying to the sheep constantly stop by every bush, but once the paths were cleared of bush the game was smoother.
Super cute! The music reminds me of Porter Robinson, not sure if that was an inspiration but I definitely hear it if it was :) I did feel like there was a lot of empty space on the map that maybe wasn't necessary. I also thought the dog could have contrasted a little bit better against the color of the grass, and its bark could use a little bit of pitch randomization. I loved the rest of the audio though, and that combined with the music and the art created a really cozy atmosphere that was just fun to hang out in while herding sheep. I also liked that the sheep could eat the bushes and the interesting puzzle of some sheep being blocked behind some bushes, although I pushed all the other sheep into the enclosure before I saw those, and I couldn't get another sheep back out to eat the bushes lol. I loved it though, great job!
YES!!! You're right on the nose about the Porter Robinson inspiration, he's one of my fav artists. I thought I would make a very different kind of music at first but when we started talking about patches of grass with the team I guess the Nurture cover popped in my head and it was a clear way from there ;)
Seemed pretty intuitive, getting the sheep into the pen and using them to bite away obstacles. I ended up soft-locking myself at the end, realizing I had a few sheep to free, but no longer had any out of the pen to free them. Could be slightly improved by having some nice feedback on sheep entering the pen (sfx or otherwise). Very clean and cute, bonus points for not having words in the title
There is a timestamp with your game in this playtest
Thanks so much for playing! It was super insightful to see a live playthrough of the game, thanks a lot for this :D its a bum that you soft locked yourself there, you were so close! I thought of the possibility of this happening, and thatโs why there was a single sheep so close to the ones trapped, but the possibility of taking that single sheep to the pen was still there.
Thanks a lot again!
Thank you so much for sharing your play through and for your feedback, it was great to see you playing the game and your reaction! As the team's artist I appreciate the compliments on the art and animations! I'm glad you enjoyed the game overall, although it's a shame you got stuck at the end. Our programmer Gamenio came up with the idea of using emojis for the title and we thought it was a fun idea based on the jam's limitation!
Made me smile! Not sure what the main objective was but enjoyed being a dog and moving the sheep around :)
Thanks for playing! Yes, someone else already pointed out being kinda clueless on what the objective was. I guess thereโs something to learn from that. Glad you enjoyed the game!
Nice, quite fun to play and overall good presentation, would be really nice to polish out some more!
Some minor suggestions:
- A counter telling the player how many sheep are left would be great
- It would be nice to vary the pitch of the dog's park to be less repetitive
- the music base rhythm feels a bit repetitive to me after a while, and makes the energy a little more frantic for me than I think suits the game.
- the tree artwork and background don't feel quite cohesive with the character, bush and fence art, which is all really nice. Having the background look more organic and polished woud improve the look of this immensely
- I'm not sure the shrub-eating where it wasn't part of a puzzle added much for me, I found it a bit more tedious for having to wait for sheep to be done doing that when they could have just walked past it.
Thanks for your feedback and for playing the game! As for your points about the background and trees, yes I agree it definitely doesnโt look as cohesive as I would have liked. Those were placeholder assets and not intended to be in the final game, but unfortunately we had some technical issues that meant we didnโt have time to replace them with the finished assets I made before the deadline.
It's nice! I managed to herd all the sheep to the farmer and got the end screen. It's obviously very bare-bones as a game and lacked any sort of progression or challenge. I did like how at points you had to use existing sheep to chew through to hidden sheep. More of that sort of thing would have been nice. It was also stuttering a lot for me but nobody else mentioned it so it might just have been something on my end. Good job!
Thanks for playing and for the feedback!
Fun take on a rarely explored gameplay mechanic. Sheepsheepdog finds a good balance between a puzzle and a cozy game, although I would have liked some skill check with the reward of the herd moving faster/further, even if it's just timing my barks or moving in more specific ways.
Thanks for playing! The lack of skill check was a design decision, we thought matched the relaxed experience we wanted to bring, but thank you for the feedback :D
Very cute and fun to run around as a dog. The limited animation for the run cycle works well, and the follow through with the tail is a nice touch. Overall, you all have created a relaxing game to play. My only note was that at first I thought I needed to gather all of the sheep into the barn, so I ran around for a while trying to find a way in. I finally came to the conclusion that I was just supposed to round them up in the fenced in area where I started (I think).
Thanks for playing the game! I put a lot of work into the animations, so Iโm glad you liked it!
And thanks for your feedback about the barn, I didnโt realize that leaving the doors open could be misleading for players, perhaps drawing it with the doors closed would have indicated more clearly that you arenโt supposed to go inside, so thank you for pointing that out!
Finally a chance to live out my lifelong dream of being a herding dog! Cute game
Thanks for playing!
Great atmosphere, art, music and SFX!
I couldn't figure out if there was an objective, but I definitely enjoyed running around barking and making the sheep eat the grass.
Thanks for playing! There is, in fact, an objective! I think it wasnโt as clearly defined as we thought :P
Really cute art and the music is lovely! It's pretty amazing what you can do with just some simple animations. Love the sound the sheep make when they eat the bush.
Thanks for playing!
