This was awesome and super fun! I'd be so down to play more.

The visuals on this game were adorable! My only feedback would be the mirror felt a little close to the player considering the scale.

Developer

Thanks for trying the game! Im glad to hear you like the visuals. Could you elaborate on what you mean about the scale? Is the mirror too small?

(+1)

The mirror size is just fine! I just thought it would be a little better if the mirror's distance from the player was a little longer.

This game has a really amazing concept! I love the idea of mirroring your enemies weapons and the fact that the grass would react too was a nice touch!

My one suggestion is to speed up the blue beetle enemies bullets. Whenever I had that ability, I would have to get really close to enemies with faster bullets in order to hit anything which made it nearly impossible to react in time. Maybe that's just a skill issue on my part though LOL

Overall it's a great game! Good job :)

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I feel pretty proud of the burning grass. I found myself doing it just for fun when testing.

I see what you mean about the bullets. My intention was to have each bullet have a strength and a drawback. The ice bullets can make enemies slow and are the strongest damage-wise so I made them slow as a drawback. Though I may have made them too slow, so I should look into rebalancing some of the stats.

Thanks for trying it out!

I'm so bad at this type of games ! But the art was charming and the music so groovy that I enjoyed myself more than I though I would. I don't think I went far enough to give feedback on the gameplay but I am so fond of Clover that I see myself coming back to this game to get better :)

Also the bug designs were great. Visually it's stunning !

Thanks for trying the game! I'm glad you enjoyed it and that you are fond of the main character. I did all the art myself, so that feels great to hear. I'm not the best artist, but I feel like I'm getting better with each game. The music I got from OpenGameArt

You mentioned you didn't get too far. Was there anything you felt was too unfair? Anything in particular that gave you the most trouble?

If you decide to try it again and have any additional thoughts, I would love to hear them!

Well I think your efforts are really paying off ! You are a great artist :)

I tried to play again but on a desktop this time, with a proper mouse and all, it changed everything ! I finished the game first try. Honestly, I think it was mainly a skill/equipment issue (playing on a laptop wasn't the smartest idea). Maybe it would have been nice to be able to regain life at some point ? Maybe have something that indicated where Clover was aiming ? Aim seemed to be my main issue, but I'm thinking it might be a me problem. I'm putting questions marks because I'm not too familiar with this genre and I do think having some challenge is good. I don't think the game needs to be easier. Also I thought it was a very nice touch to make the grass catch fire and deal damage, I was afraid the whole room would burst into flame, it pulled me into the world in an exciting way.

Again, great job

Finding health is a good suggestion. One of my plans was to add different power-ups and upgrades like faster bullets, element resistance, health upgrades, dashing effects, etc. Unfortunately I had run out of time to implement that kind of system. I originally planned for there to be ~30 rooms for the player to go through, but the lack of items had me reduce it to ~10 so it wouldn't be too difficult to survive.

The way the aiming works is that the mirror shoots relative to the direction it is in away from Clover. For example, if the mirror is directly above her, it'll shoot straight up. If directly below her, it'll shoot straight down. I could probably add a reticle or a line to show how the mirror shoots to make it more clear.

I'm glad you like the grass burning! That was one of my favorite mechanics as well. I get what you mean about not being familiar with the genre. I typically play and make platformers, so this submission overall was a challenge for me to design.

Thanks for your additional feedback! I tried your team's game as well and left feedback and it seems very promising so far!

I read on the page that you planned on adding objects ! I think it would be great to add novelty, and help when needed. Element resistance sounds dope ! But, the week went by so fast, we had to put aside so things too, it's understandable. Do you plan on adding them later on ?

Aiming has never been my thing haha..

Yeah I saw, I went and checked some of your other projects ! I really liked Color Coded Croaker. But it's cool to try new stuff, too. And I might not have much to compare Insect Reflect to but I thought it was pretty sweet.

My pleasure ! And thank you for playing and reviewing our game ! We really enjoyed it, you brought up really interesting stuff that gave us new ideas to improve the game. It's our first game jam so we were not sure what to expect from this phase, but it's very cool to get feedback :)

I enjoyed the concept! The main concept was straight to the point and I appreciated the Zelda-like dungeoneer style!. However, I felt as if the mirror used to reflect was too small. If it was a little bigger, I feel it would be more enjoyable!

Also something I was a little confused on was the red screen effect as it covered the gameplay too much. It was also a little buggy as it carried over to the home screen after game over. Can I suggest an overlay or multiply blend for future iterations of the game?

Great game concept overall! I wish you the best of luck on further development if there are plans to do so!

Thanks for trying the game out! I can see the mirror being too small being an issue

That red screen effect is not at all intentional. I have no idea what could be causing that as I have never seen that before even during testing. Are you playing the browser or desktop version? I tested the game in the Chrome browser so if you are using a different browser, that could be doing something?

Good question about the red screen effect! I was testing on a Chromium browser (Helium), but I wouldn’t be surprised if my fork had some differences. I think this showed up if I got hit by a fire element.
