Unfortunately I also got stuck on the first upgrade. Tried several times because the game actually looks fun. With my last try I had the hope that I can somhow bypass the upgrades but I'm not in lead here :-P
Never the less the idea is catching (otherwise I wouldn't have retried and looked for workarounds). The music is awesome and I like that you onboarded the Player immediatly with the controls.
