How does your game fit the Theme & Boss Battle Edition?
You are the protagonist, theo, an insufferable manchild, but also THE BOSS, a ruthless tank. Why? Sorry, no spoiler!
You must go on and fight your archnemesis, let's call him "the old man"... sotty again, no spoiler but it is a boss battle.

Have you joined a game jam before?

Yes

Roughly how much time did you spend developing? (in hours)
A week

Anything else you'd like to share about your game or development process?
As always, basically it's me trying to learn unity, failing, angrily stepping back to my trusted js. All music is credited, i checked not applicable for art because is just a minimal neon-wireframe model

I like how deep the story goes and the visuals are pretty cool, some more movement in the fights could definitely benefit the imersion.

Developer

I agree, animations are cool to watch.

P.s. Mi incuriosice molto come tu sia riuscito a fare un gioco in html, mi farebbe piacere sapere come hai fatto 👀bacini <3

Developer(+1)

I loved the narrative,

Also the time to choose was a great idea, I would love to see it escalated to a system with more complexity on future.

Looking forward for your next game, congrats

Developer

Many thanks. The original idea had 3 acts, each one with different enemies and attack pattern... oh well i still have the notes, can work on it. Thanks for the feedback.

At first I didn't get some things but after a couple of deaths I've started to understand the game better. It was a good experience overall and the game goes well with the theme. visuals are nice and combines well with the music. I think it needs a bit more of play testing to balance abilities though. And there is a small bug that makes the Act I label change to Act II permanently when going to the second act, dying and retrying, just to let you know.

Nice work!

Developer(+1)

I agree with you, balancing is important and  need to be checked carefully. Thanks for the strange bug, it's the first time, i'll check it.

The concept is super creative and stands out a lot. I really liked the whole identity/mask theme and how it’s reflected in the gameplay. The visuals are simple but stylish, and the combat feels smooth. I think giving the player a little more time at the beginning to process what’s happening would help a lot, and adding more audio feedback could make everything feel even more immersive. Really cool game, great job!

Developer

Thanks for the detailed feedback! I agree with you and I plan to increase the time for the first encounter to about 20 seconds per choice, and/or make an easy mode with 15 seconds per choice.

A quick warning zoom level of the webpage affect the game size in full screen  which makes reading very hard based on zoom level.  Maybe write a small red warning on itch page?

Developer

odd… but perhaps useful for someone if you zoom in? Need to check, thanks for the heads up.

Submitted (2 edits)

If i did not notice I would not played your game, all text was too small. I was not this zoom out but just to show how bad it could be as an example.

Developer

Good point, I'll add a warning about zooming after the jams end,

Submitted(+1)

You are allowed to change your itch page and themes.(not the game!)

Developer

I tought everything was freezed! Good to know, I just add a line about the zoom, thanks for the head's up.

Hey there, this is a great game! First of all this is probably one of the more narratively interesting game jam submissions and I like the whole idea of building a mask and the dual personality, it was a great way of showing that off. The combat is also pretty nice. The art style is super simple but also really cool and well done.
I also appreciate the fact that you have an in game tutorial, it really makes things clear and what to do.
Here are some point of improvements I had:
- I think the 5 second timer is way too fast, it took me a bit to actually understand what's going on, who's health bar is who. I think at the start making the timer a lot longer or just removing it completely might be better😅.
- I think SFX would really level up your game. SFX is usually a crucial part in game feel and I think just adding some simple hover and click SFX would make it feel a lot better to play! It's already smooth with the very minimalistic art style but SFX would be a very nice addition.
But yeah overall it's a nice game! So good job :D

Developer (1 edit) (+1)

Thanks for playing. About the timer... yes i run some tests, didn't want to be too easy... in the end it seemed a good mix but i think i could double it for the first battle so you can familiarize with the game.

About sfx, well, i barely add time to add music, so this is surely on the todo list.

Hi I'm acuristic, the developer of the game "DeathWish", here's my feedback on your game:

Things I liked:

  • Visuals: I really like the "Hand drawn" aesthetic of the game, the bloom just adds more to it!
  • Tutorial: The tutorial at the start was very good, but it did seem a bit too long as it had some unnecessary stuff at the start.
  • The UI: At the start the ui seemed a bit too much info to process at once, but once you understand it, its pretty nice.

Things That Need Improvement:

  • Switching System: For some reason, I cannot switch from theo -> boss or boss -> theo it felt quite unfair that when the health of theo/boss was low I cannot switch to the other character.
  • Damage: The boss seems a too overpowered, as he 3 shots the thugs, and theo seems too weak his health is too low I felt that the boss was carrying the game, and theo's character was unnecessary (I didn't read the story sorry) maybe it has something to do with the story? Even if, it still doesn't bring any gameplay value to the game.
  • Passive Attacks: I also noticed that some attacks like "Intimidate" and "Poison" were pretty weak, while using the intimidate attack, the attack decreased as said in the description of the attack, but suddenly it increased back to normal damage, which felt inconsistent and the poison felt like it did almost nothing.
  • Defense Moves: There was no reason for me to use defence, as it was just a worse version of the "punch" attack since the thug attacks either if i choose punch or defend, the only difference being the attack is lessend and the enemy's health doesnt decrease (since its defend). Instead you should make the defence move skip/stop the enemy from attacking.
  • Audio: The bg music is a bit too loud
Developer(+1)

You really took the feedback job seriously! Thanks!

About the switching, you have 1 turn cooldown, otherwise the game was too easy.

The boss is supposed to be stronger and theo to be weaker, I think it's an important part of the game but there is always space for tuning and balancing. Thanks again for the complete feedback.

Love the concept though but it is hard to understand to switch between each character but the idea is cool! visual wise the visual is fine. But i found that to press esc on the web gameplay it does exit the full screen instead of skip the cut scene

Developer

I tought the name button and the tutorial would be enough but I can improve the switching system.

The "esc" is intended, you are supposed to watch the scenes, they are important for the plot. :D Just kidding, I did the fastest thing i could and will fix after the jam. Thanks for finding out.

Been reading the whole of it though haha :)
