Very fun game, great to play, with excellent sound design. You did a great job!
Solid entry all around, had a lot of fun just trying to beat the first level. Overall I think this was a great, well-balanced twist on the original. Having to store up and manage shots adds a nice element of strategy, as well as clearing out a quadrant to get rid of an enemy (at the risk of not finishing it off and leaving them angrier). Music was cool, and I really liked the sound design (though I found shot firing sound effect a little annoying, but I suppose it fits thematically). Movement feels good, and appropriately Pac-Man-ish.
Really, I only have two somewhat minor critiques:
1: The zoomed-in camera view didn't add anything for me. I thought the scrolling effect for the warp was cool, but the zoomed in view just kind of makes it unnecessarily more difficult to plan your movements. The level is the same size as the original Pac-Man, so I don't see what was gained my having a scrolling camera, aside from the cool effect (which still would've worked zoomed out).
2: It took reading the instructions for me to realize that the enemies can take multiple hits when they're angrier. This is telegraphed very poorly, and led to some frustrating moments where I was wondering why my firing wasn't working. On top of this, how am I supposed to know how many hits they can take? Perhaps the sprites change when they're damaged, but if so they're moving too fast for me to tell.
Overall, this is a great entry, though, I enjoyed it quite a bit. Good job!
Hey! Thanks for your very constructive comment, you pointed all the unfinished and frustrating points of the current version of my entry.
I admit the camera panning doesn’t really add anything to the gameplay, on the contrary it hinders the fun. I was frustrated with the screen aspect and the character size using the grid I chosen but I could have found another option to make the character bigger. I may try to remove the panning (or just zoom out, or reduce maze cell size).
The ghosts telegraphing sucks… a lot! Different sprites is barely recognizable and speed difference between the different ghost states is minimal. Once again, well said! Thanks for confirming all the weak spots of my entry.
And btw! Wonderful entry! I hope I wasn’t too hard and managed to keep it a bit constructive.
No problem! I appreciated your feedback and didn't feel like it was harsh at all. Personally, the whole reason I join a game jam is to get quality feedback. I hope my feedback didn't sound too harsh either!
Such a fun and enjoyable game. The coloring and art style really stood out and made everything pop. Gameplay felt smooth and really easy to work with, Fantastic work!
Very fun game, I enjoyed having to collect items of a specific color to defeat the enemies!! At first I found it quite difficult, but I got better haha
Game feel and aesthetics are great! Loved the camera moving around and the map looping visually rather than just wrapping around. Completing a quadrant to kill an enemy completely is a good mechanic. The shooting feels off because it seems to take more than 1 shot sometimes, but its not clear why. I'd prefer a focus on dodging skillfully and clearing quadrants to lower the threat.
Overall amazing work, I think its my favourite of the jam.
Great job! I like how you incorporated music into the core game play loop, and the extra features like the jukebox.
Really liked the premise of the game! I really the idea of having each section of the map kill a certain ghost, and the music was a banger. Although I don't mind the difficulty of the game, I wish the power pill (AKA the volume icon) worked a bit more reliably. Great game!
I think this is a brutal idea, great visuals and music. I have to agree that it’s a bit hard and controls can get clunky at times. However it’s quite fun and addictive!
Good fun and quite addictive, nice twist on the original! I like the idea of eliminating a ghost from the maze by collecting all pellets of the same colour. The game is difficult because the ghosts are fast and smart, but that is the same for the original PacMan. Only minor gripe is that changing direction at junctions is a bit fiddly.
funny how the pacman walks
I love the visual art style. I think the premise has heaps of potential.
Subjectively, I thought the enemies were a little bit too fast for the field of view.
In the end I had a good time and this became one of my favourites!
