Abysmal controls in the main loop

Sorry but as good as this game has been reported to be, I can't get over the godawful decisions around the controls. Especially with the filter screen on the main console. I quit in the tutorial because to be honest, having such a fiddling control mechanism may be "immersive" but this is not an imsim. you don't need to duplicate the controls of the original System Shock to have a great experience. Everything else going on in this game is fantastic but I can't get over just how awful these controls are. I hope there are plans to overhaul them because it's a shame that such a terrific game is held back by its mechanics.

the controls sucks completely and everyone understands this except the dev and a bunch of yesman who are screaming to death here that this is the best control design in recent years. why there is no option to redo everything for yourself or return the old control is unclear, but most likely the Nose just doesn't give a fuck.

It's a shame because the mechanics are the ONLY thing keeping me from enjoying the game.

There are extensive bind options, but I do get what you're saying. The control scheme leaves something to be desired. I'd image the old controls could probably be modded in as well!

I think the new controls are also a lot less accessable to controller users, which I do hope to see first-party support for!

brother they're not even accessible for keyboard/mouse users

check out the old controls in the pre 9.0 version
never hurts to have some extra perspective when debating things like control schemes

It's not even just the controls. Why do we need to wiggle our mouse just right to push numbers on keypads? Why do we need to very slowly and tediously fine tune the controls on the console to focus on signals, something that is at the core of the gameplay? Why do we need three different methods of inventory grab/hold/use? It's tedium for the sake of "immersion", and it's a surefire way of alienating the vast majority of people who don't want their games to run like an OS.

Just an FYI, you don't need to use the mouse to use keypads. The keypads react to numpad keys as of 0.9

I honestly have little to no problem with the controls. Sure it's a bit tedious, but you just get used to them after a while, and upgrading your consoles help alot with the auto polarity and other stuff.

my man, I can understand everything, but we don't live in a time when the first Gothic was released and for the sake of novelty nice game could be forgiven for absolutely crappy control. It's like the 21st century now, and player doesn't have to tolerate and adapt to a game where almost everything is fine, but because of one thing people stop playing it. oh I love this game, I truly do. but for now I don't play it coz I'm done with this, I just fucked up dragging monotonous, boring, trash-loaded, eventless gameplay through this fucking control that pissed off most of the players in the first couple of days. the game is fine. the graphics is fine. the idea is fine. but honestly speaking for now playing this it's like chopping firewood.

Not to be pedantic, but chopping firewood is one of the easiest things that someone can do.

Regardless, hey man, I didn't mean to upset you. I understand you're frustrated, I just don't see much of a problem with how the controls are now. I'd argue they're better now than they were before. I quite enjoy the current control scheme, but even-so, they still have time to improve.

You have every right to feel discomforted by the new control scheme, I just don't seem to have the same issue. I'm actually on my first ever playthrough (day 45 at 0.8 speed, vers 0.9+) and I haven't got much to write home about in terms of events. I'm just not all that stressed about it.

Honestly, I'd love to hear about what controls specifically you have a problem with so that I might have a chance to better relate with you. What specifically is causing you such dismay? What happened that made you so distressed?

With love,

Me ♡

I know EXACTLY how you feel. The new control system is infuriating. I really really want to like the game, but when the way to control just pisses me off because its so hard to use, it saps away all the enjoyment. You can't escape bad controls. Why isn't there an option to revert back?

Good news for you, Nose has said he's looking into adding legacy controls back as a toggle for 0.10. No guarantee it'll happen, but I hope it helps to know that he's acknowledged and is trying to do so

very big if true
