Love the color palette for this one looks great. I love when the new mechanic gets introduce with switching between the different sides to create platforms. Great game!

congrats on making it into the top ten well deserved. And thank you for playing my game.

Really pretty!!! That intro was so nicely done! Great logo too! Beautiful color choices overall as well!

Platforming reminded me of Mega Man, especially with the tight jumps and dropping platforms. Great distinct enemy variety too.

Great work!

Developer

Thanks for playing! I'm glad to hear you enjoyed the visuals! We put a lot of effort into them.  Thanks also for your comment!

Amazing game! Great graphics, audio, and gameplay. It has a good NES feel to it. You also have a good variety of behaviors in the enemies. I like the attention to detail... like the animation when a coin is collected or an enemy is defeated. Well done.

Developer

Thanks for playing! I'm glad to hear you liked the details. Thanks also for your comment!

Very strong art direction. The graphics feel MSX-y to me. The only two things that kind of take away from the perfect retro feel are the too detailed rocks in the intro and the swipe-over effect in between levels. The controls are tight, the level design is good, and just when things started to feel a bit repetitive it shifts over to a completely new playing style? Unfortunately I ran out of lives before I could figure out how it's supposed to work, and I didn't feel like starting from the beginning again. I'd suggest a "continue" function that resets your score but lets you stay at the current stage (or at least the current "world").

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing, and thank you for the suggestion!
While I was developing the game, I went with a "Game Over = restart" system because the game is relatively short. It usually takes around 5–7 minutes to reach World 2, so I didn't think it would be too frustrating.
That said, I completely understand your point. Having to restart the entire game just because you're still trying to understand a new mechanic isn't a great experience. I'll definitely look into adding some kind of continue system in a future update.
(And I'm already working on adding checkpoints!)
Thanks again for the feedback, and for taking the time to play the game!

The NES aesthetic is really nice here, but the enemy placement went really bad on this, I couldn't get past the "Magma's Heart", as the first platform jump is very weird and wants the player to get stunned in a very specific timing, there is no way to just jump over the enemy there because the platform will fall before that, and if you get hit in the wrong timing, the platform will simply fall before being able to jump again, and the player simply can't attack either on that point. I only managed to get past it twice I think, but then died a bit later and got stuck on it again.

Developer

Thanks for playing! So, I noticed some people asking about the weird enemy placement, but the lava sections are puzzle-based. You can skip the enemies if you are in the right world! Tbh, that was the whole point of the enemies on the tight platforms, but it's my first time doing level design, so the cutscenes probably didn't answer the questions very well. Also, Magma's Heart is unfortunately the most bugged level. I've fixed almost everything in the new patch, I'm just waiting for the jam to end to publish it. Anyway, thanks for your comment and patience as well!

the game is very polished with pretty good art and music, the platforming section of the game was pretty tight and the controls felt the same way, the enemy design was really nice and they all def trying to mess with you, getting extra lives when you collect enough gems was a good addition and def makes the game a bit more fair since it's pretty hard (and i can tell you got some inspirations from super mario for that) ,although i felt that i was kinda stunned when i get hit by the enemies which isn't really good for a tight platforming game like this one, also the enemy placement felt some times unfair since some enemies were placed in very small platforms where it's really hard to get down there and kill them before they hit you, but other than that, it's a pretty solid game and had fun playing it

if you have some free time maybe check out my game and leave some feedback there, i'd like to hear some ;) ;)

Thanks for playing! So glad you enjoyed the vibe, art, and music. Regarding the stun mechanic and enemy placement, you’re spot on those tight spots can be pretty unforgiving. I’ve decided to keep it as it is for this project, but that's great feedback for me to take into my next one! Glad to hear the extra lives helped balance things out a bit. Thanks for the kind words, I'll be sure to check out your game soon!

Felt very classic. Had fun playing. Thank you!

Thanks for playing! (also, i want more of druny lane)

I kinda love this game even though I don't like it that much. Sure it has weird enemy placement causing many deaths, and the music's instruments sound like that one Linux soundfont, but it also has really cool graphics that fit the jam theme (reminiscent of Metroid), the music is nicely written and I'm especially a sucker for that title theme, and the artwork is cute. Best of luck on any and all endeavors!

Developer

Thanks For Playing! The "Weird enemy placement" are just some trolls I fought that would be pretty funny to do. Just like some NES/SNES Games did. And don't worry, I'm bad at platforms as well! I'm currently working on improving some parts, so stay tuned!

this game has so much speedrun potential!!!

I really had a great time and was gratifying to stick around to keep replaying "world" 1 until I beat it. The switch to world 2 was super cool, and I am definitely interested what else there is in the game if i can ever beat it! "World" 2 has a lot of potential, but i suffered from platform readability a little bit. The timing and usage of the new item was instantly interesting , really really fun to use it, but guessing "is this gonna be a platform or not?" was more frustrating than challenging. It wasn't all of the platforms, some of the colors were very clear and indicated what i needed to know, but there were a few confusing colors and platform types i got tricked by several times. Not sure if the trickery was intended since it doesn't really have any kaizo feel to it other than the first falling platform surprising me!

the NES feel with difficulty, precision inputs, music, sprites, and color were all PERFECT.  because the NES aesthetic was so perfect, the black rectangle scale tween during screen transitions bothered me a little bit more than it should. (To critique the game's art, i have to resort to critiquing the screen transitions... xD)

I think my favorite part of the game was learning the timing of the gold enemies. The enemy designs were really well balanced and challenging overall. Definitely reminded me of MANY old NES platformers my cousin and I would replay over and over, but only ever beat 1-2 levels whenever we played it haha

And last but not least... thesoundtrack... Old Mines was such a banger!!!!!!! GG WP!

Developer

Man, really thanks for playing and for the gameplay! Thanks for the compliments on the aesthetics and gameplay. This is literally my second finished game, so it means a lot to me! Regarding the black rectangle transitions (the fades), I tried to go for a 'classic-modern' NES-style look, which is why some aspects are a bit smoother than they would have been on original hardware. I'm really glad you liked the soundtrack! After this jam, I’m planning an update to address some of the design hurdles, so it’ll be a bit less punishing. Again, thanks for your time and for the awesome feedback! And what about the criticism? Honestly, it's totally fair, balance is everything!

This one was pretty cool! I really liked the color palette you went with. I also used purple and reds in mine, yours looks very vibrant and the color combo just gives it a real retro feel. I liked all the different enemy types and I thought the attack animation was SO smooth. Having multiple songs is always a great touch as well :D

Developer

Thanks for playing! And YEAHHH, for some reason, the attack animation is SO SMOOTH 😭😭. I don't know what the artist was thinking, but it's kinda cool. Thanks for your time too!

Developer

I know what i was thinking

Developer

crazy stuff

Submitted(+2)

Good job. This game feels very authentic. I really like the music.

Developer

Thanks for praising the music, I made at least 5 to 3 versions of songs for each level and only one made it to the end lmao

Submitted(+2)

This was the best game out of the games I have tried here today so far.

Developer(+1)

Thanks For Playing and WOW, I'm really happy to hear that you liked THAT much of the game! and Thanks for your comment too!

Developer

Thanks for Playing! Yes, the jumps are pretty precise! I'm happy to hear that you liked it!

Submitted(+2)

It absolutely nailed the nes feel. I liked the gameplay a lot! Sadly didn't get to the end tho

Developer

Thank you for playing! Yesss, it's kind of difficult 😭
I'm really glad you enjoyed it. If you decide to give it another try someday, good luck! I'm sure you'll make it to the end!

The boss died, the thing got destroyed and I left the cave. I think it took me 3 runs (and then one million lives).

The game 100% feels like a NES game up to the slightly rigid controls (not only not using the sword while jumping but also not being able to control your jump while you're using the curse item), it looks great, it sounds great and it's super fun to play. The difficulty is perfect with sequences of the appropriate length and it ends with a satisfying boss sequence.

Thanks for sharing!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! I actually spent hours playing NES games before the jam trying to absorb as much as I could from them. I'm really glad to hear the game managed to capture that feeling and, most importantly, that you had fun with it!
