We're getting a divorce, I'm taking the kids.

Not much time left to write a lot, just want to say that I find this really neat, quick arcade-y gameplay with lots of interesting adverse effects. Didn't get very far though, cause I couldn't figure out what to do when bullets started to bounce off enemies.

Developer(+1)

thank you for making the last comment lol, yeah you prob came across the parry curse, you were supposed to shoot at that bounced bullet :), glad you enjoyed the game nonetheless

Submitted(+1)

It was really fun, and felt good to play. The modifiers were interesting and put a cool little twist on each floor. I really liked the music and sfx as well. The only thing I would've maybe wanted was to be able to shoot diagonally, the arrow and diagonal movement made it feel like you should be able to.

Developer

yo thanks for the feedback, happy you enjoyed the game, my friend def cooked in the music while i tried to add as much sfx to make the game feel better, some people did mention the diagonal shooting problem and yeah, i just thought it wouldn't be nice to play with, but that's prob just me lol

Submitted(+1)

Yeah, I could see it going both ways. The only time I really felt the "need" to shoot diagonally was when I was on the floor where you couldn't move normally.

Developer

makes total sense yeah, good idea

Submitted(+1)

Well that was unexpectedly fun and challenging! Feels like something you would have seen at an Arcade, would have been an absolute coin eater :)

Developer

YOO the coin eater joke is crazy XD thanks for the comment happy that you liked it lol, and it is def made to eat coins for sure 😈

Submitted(+1)

Great gameplay loop and it's pretty addictive!  I really liked the randomness to each playthrough and having to adapt to different abilities.  There's a lot of variation which helps keep things interesting.

The art is good but I feel there are quite a few conflicting resolutions across the sprites and UI which takes away from the NES-feel.  Tidying this up to keep things consistent would help to make this feel very polished.

Loved the wacky music, those tunes are a lot of fun to listen to!

Developer

Yo happy that you liked it, and thanks for the feedback, yeah the mixels are def a problem I should look out for, I just don't know how I should make them consistent lol :')

Submitted(+1)

Chaotic good game. Good NES feel. Convincing animations. Had to double check it was authentic NES. Which it is.

Developer

thanks for the comment :)

Submitted(+1)

Interesting concept. The way each room changes the mechanics some how and the player needs to adapt.

It was a bit challenging. I ended up killing myself with the reflection mechanic. lol. The momentum one was tricky but fun.

The music definitely sounded NES. Good job there.

Developer(+1)

yo thanks for the feedback, yeah that was my goal which is to make the player use their skills and adapt, the reflection curse is def tricky along side the momentum one, but good thing you liked the music, my friend did a good job there :)

Submitted(+1)

Good use of a single room. The idea of shifting the mechanics every stage is pretty neat for a roguelike as it inherently keeps things fresh

Submitted(+1)

I liked the idea of random curses in each floor. Only was able to get at the 9th level, and played a few times, so I may seen most of the curses. In one of the floors I get the spikes with the recoil... not fair at all XD.

It is a fun game, very replayable

Developer

yo happy that you had fun with the game, yeah some combos def needs to be removed or get debuffed :')

Submitted(+1)

Def 5/5 gameplay, introducing and removing rules using the stage name is sick and combining them leads to interesting combinations. Can see this being fun to play and compete with others on haha!!
Could never figure out how "Parry" works. That's my only real complaint.

Developer

yo thanks for the feedback and happy you liked it :) , yeah some people still can't figure out how the parry works out, even tho i've added a curse hint menu that you can access by pressing "space" :')

Submitted(+1)

THIS IDEA IS AMAZING

It's like a sampler tray of every curse a roguelike game would have, it's shockingly fun considering those are supposed to be the part you don't want lol. Like most I peaked at floor 11

The feedback I have:

* It feels strange that diagonal shooting is not allowed, only because diagonal movement IS and the cursor points that way. My brain definitely expects bullets to go the direction the arrow faces

* I wish the current curse had been displayed at the top of the screen instead of needing to press a button for it, sometimes I would be going too fast and misread which curse I got and mess up; and there's some spare room at the top of the screen, at least to fit some keywords I think, even if the bars that sometimes show would be moved

* The graphics have quite a few mixels, like the UI Cursor and hearts. The enemies are also a different resolution from the Xs on the floor, the bullets, and possibly the main character. It's probably technically legal but I think the game would look a little more cohesive+NES accurate if all of the pixel resolutions matched. Also the player's direction cursor has diagonal pixels that's definitely not possible lol.

* One of the instruments sounded like it was being played through a speaker for some reason? Overall solid track though

* Great gameplay variety, there's really a lot of mechanics in here, it's awesome! Every room is a whole new strategy! Parry in particular is fascinating I don't think I've ever seen a bullet parry lol.

* 3 lives is tough as NAILS, especially on higher floors, even though you heal on perfect rooms. I wish when you got +1 heart on a full health bar it added a heart or maybe a piece of a heart or something. Or maybe if it was an option to get an extra heart container in the upgrade rooms, I didn't see any if there were

* It's small but I will say I appreciate the downtime inbetween floors, it's enough time for me to reset my brain after coming off of a inverse control. It works better than if it had been rooms side by side.

Really fun entry overall!

Developer(+1)

yo thanks for the feedback and good to hear you liked the game lol, it seems everyone peaked at floor 11 smh =-= idk how that's possible lmao

* yeah people have addressed that too, the arrow points the direction your moving but not your bullet's, which yeah could be a lil confusing lol, but i just found it not fitting for me but maybe i'll just re add it if i decided to do a post jam update :)

* good point yeah, you don't have enough time to read the curses def cuz there isn't enough time to read them, and also ngl i should've put the curses in the bottom when you're playing prob, but yeah the whole reason i've added that curse hint menu is because of that issue, thought i'd strike 2 birds with one stone so the player can know the curse they have + read it's description so they know what each one does, but that's still a good point nonetheless

* omd the mixels problem, yeah i def struggle with keeping everything consistent, for the last part about the direction cursor having diagonal pixels i don't get that one exactly lol, i just rotated it at 45 degrees for all 8 directions the player can move in, plus maybe we can just not talk about it and just say i redrew them ;) ;) (ok let's not lie to ourselves XD ) but maybe you can explain that more if you want

* well i didn't notice that problem in the music, since my friend made it, so i can't say much :')

* thanks lol, i tried to focus on keeping the scope small so i can add alot of curses to keep the game replayable etc, so happy that you liked that

* yeah idk why i kept it 3 in the start lol, should've made it 4 or smth, also there is a 1+ max heart upgrade but maybe you didn't come across it :')

* yessir i had to add that downtime and still sometimes my brain still stays in inversion mode while playing the game XD

and thanks for playing it too :)

I reached Floor 11 during my last run, died to SummonerOnly, Inversion and Parry, after losing several times in Floor 9.

I like games which go all-in with the theme so this one obviously fits my taste. I like the large variety of curses, Parry is a specially fun twist to deal with, and some combinations are cool, SummonerOnly in Darkness was hilarious. Music is great, the game controls well and then it's pretty fun, very replayable too as many mixes of curses make you feel like you're playing a different game. That last part is specially cool for these small jam games as it makes a game feel all the more like a complete game.

Thanks for sharing!

Developer(+1)

bro thanks for all the feedback and really happy that liked it lmao, yeah ngl i myself cannot think of a game idea without a theme quickly so always stick to the theme and try to go all in with it exactly how you said, i tried to keep the scope small so i can fit as many curses as possible so it can be replayable, and yeah that combo you got is def crazy lol, but i just suggest you using dash more to go through enemies and maybe if you were lucky you can pick up some 1+ max heart upgrade since that one helps, and just focus on the more dangerous enemies first (in your case you could kill the summoners first then kill all the remaining mini slimes lol), but nevertheless good to hear that you enjoyed it :)

Submitted(+1)

Nice to see a roguelike game in the jam! Parry and reflection were definitely tricky... Inversion plus darkness messed me up big time :D  There was good variety in the enemies and curses. Although I had difficulty making any real progress after a few runs. (I'm sure this is just because I only played a short time)

The first time I saw "breakfloor" I was thinking the floor was going to break somehow... then I realized, no, you actually get a break. LOL

Developer

lmao good to hear you enjoyed the game, and yeah the game focuses on your skills and your ability to adapt to different curses, and yeah i tried to keep it a bit easy for you to progress through more floors but ig i've failed at that, but maybe you should use the dash alot more since with that one you can survive for a lot longer (since it actually gives you i frames), and yes the break floor gives you a break to pick an upgrade  but imagine the floor actually breaking tho XD

First off, very smart to contain the game on a single screen - allows you to focus on jam packing the game with tons of game mechanics and polish!

Digging the music and characters have a cute charm to them!

I noticed for the "NOWALKING" curse - if you try to aim + shoot diagonally - it only shoots up, right, down or left - no diagonal shooting - but that seems like a simple fix. :)

And I thought I was stuck at first but tapping the "Space" key brought up a hint that I can dash - and I noticed there were hints for all of the curses - so this was very helpful!

I would love to see boss battle in an updated version! (Maybe a boss that randomizes curses or a boss that uses a variation of the current curse you have to attack you with)

Great work on this game! :D

Developer

thank you for your feedback, happy that you liked the game, well first of all there isn't really a diagonal shooting, only 4 ways, you can move diagonally but not shoot in that way lol, yeah the curse hint menu was a last minute addition but felt it could help the players to know what each curse exactly does, and the boss fight idea def fits the game so i'll try to include that if i decided to do a post jam update :)

Submitted(+1)

Really fun gameplay that reminded me a bit of The Binding of Isaac. The inverted-controls curse caught me completely by surprise on my first run ! The beginning felt a little challenging, but once I got used to the mechanics, I managed to reach some highest floors. I think the game could be even more fun with a boss fight every 5 floors to break up the progression. Overall, it's a great entry and I had a nice time playing it. Good job :)

Developer(+1)

yoo good to hear you liked it lol, and yessir you did catch the binding of isaac inspiration there lmao, and yes the game focuses on your skills and your ability to adapt to different curses in order to get through the next floors, and yeah i was planning on adding bosses and stuff but the time sadly wasn't enough and i rathered making a more polished game rather than a buggy unpolished game with a lot of content, cuz yk quality over quantity ;) but yeah thanks for your feedback and for playing it :)

Submitted(+1)

Challenging and fun game and the random curses really made it a memorable experience

the parry curse was the hardest one to deal with i think! NoWalking messed me up too at first til I realized I was allowed to dash. And the Wall Bounce curse was a really interesting twist that made me play differently to exploit it :D

Also, I had to wait in the main menu for a minute... because the music was so good!!

Developer(+1)

yoo thanks for your feedback, and thank you for dropping a video with your gameplay lol, yeah for the parry curse you def have to create some space between you and the monsters in order to be able to parry "the parried bullet" yk, for the wall bounce i saw you trying to only kill the monsters with the bounced bullet but you can shoot them normally (unless you want to kill them stylishly as you did there B) ), and yeah my friend def cooked with the music and i'm happy that he volunteered to join lol, other than that happy that you enjoyed it

Submitted(+1)

Cool I idea having each room be a different curse it keep me on my toes and added a nice challenge to the game. I also like the roguelike elements of this game with the upgrade system. The furthest I got was floor 11 once there were 3 curses at once I was cooked.

Developer(+1)

yeah with 3 curses and more you'd start to need to lock in, also from what i'm seeing i think the 11th floor is def cursed for sure since our friend in the comment below also died at floor 11 lol, i think you should def focus more on using the dash and creating more space, but yeah happy that you liked the game, funny thing is the upgrade system was a last min addition since i felt the player couldn't reach high floors even with crazy skills (my highest floor was 30+ but after i added the upgrades system ofc)

Submitted(+1)

Cool game! I would have loved to be able to aim diagonally (I think it was not possible or maybe a skill issue). Was able to reach floor 11 until parry killed me

Developer

nice happy you liked it, yeah the parry is a little tricky curse since you'd have to get some space away from the enemies so you can parry "the parried bullet", but reaching floor 11 is not bad! so good job lol

Submitted(+1)

nice game!
