Great looking game, the map implementation is impressive, and the music is awesome, really love that battle track! I'm not really good with turn based combat rpgs sadly, I kept getting destroyed really quickly...
good job. I enjoy a good first person RPG.
This game is great, though it probably could do with some checkpoints and a bit of balancing.
The atmosphere is fantastic, which is greatly helped by the audio design. Everything about the presentation here meshes together perfectly, making it feel very polished and cohesive!
The idea of having the rest of your party made up of various tools as weapons is pretty cool! Also makes it so that losing the encounter when the leader runs out of health perfectly logical, because they can't really be expected to do anything on their own.
Love the first person dungeon crawling aspect of it, combined with the minimap, exploring felt intuitive and clear, never had to worry about getting turned around and ending back where I came from accidentally. Very seamless.
Tried a couple times, but both times I just got combo'd to death in a single turn from full hp, the second time I even made it to the lantern and leveled up Liam again, but still got oneshot by the same group after buffing everyone's defenses. I guess I should've debuffed them first maybe, but I just wanted to take one of them down before they all got me again. Sadly the two remaining attacked Liam only and landed both shots ^^;
Not sure if skill issue or my luck is just terrible, but I did enjoy playing it even if I don't feel motivated enough to start from the beginning each time when the game can end in an instant like that.
From the overall quality it's pretty clear that's just a case of not having enough time to test every scenario enough (very hard to do when there's RNG to combat and enemy AI to test every possible low and high end of luck to see if it's fair enough, and even then it takes a lot of experience to know what playstyles people will likely gravitate towards based on the mechanics introduced)
I hope you continue with this one!
Thanks for taking the time to write such a thoughtful comment! It might happen that a full version gets released, we will see
As someone trying to make a dungeon crawler as a long-term project, this is very relevant to my interests. Very good audio and atmosphere! It's an interesting idea to have items stand in for party members, and the resulting combat mechanics. Encounter rate feels a bit high, so I never felt quite at leisure to explore and take in the great dungeon atmosphere. It also seemed quite easy to run into overpowered enemies with no recourse to get out of the encounter alive (at least as far as I could discern).
Yeah, it's not impossible, but the RNG of some situations is there. Right before the jam release, I had to reshuffle the order of two encounters to make sure the game wasn't impossible outright if you got them, but depending on what weapons you have and what encounter you get, it can still be quite a challenge to win. I will say that if you learn the enemy weaknesses, you will have a much better chance of success, but it's still possible to get unlucky - the balance of the encounters in this game is probably my biggest regret with this project.
Real, there's never enough time for balancing in a jam...
The game looked great! the audio and music were pretty fire, and def felt that nes vibes and the game feels like it came in the end of nes life cycle lol, plus the game is pretty unique like that one game (hard racing "even tho that one was going to come to the nes but it got canceled lol"),i liked you can go quickly through the dialogue so it doesn't get boring and too slow, but i felt the healing was too weak that it was barely helpful, and i kinda felt the game over music was too long (like it's pretty slow for you to go back to the start), and the enemies were prob a little bit stronger than me lol, so i kept dying (maybe that's a skill issue from my part tho XD), but yeah it's crazy to imagine a flashlight standing next to mr liam fighting ghosts and fairies lol
The itch.io page looks fantastic. I see many references and nods to megaten's battle system. Taru/Tarukaja for example. I died a few times and I'm still learning the enemy weaknesses. I'd be playing this a lot if I had it on the NES growing up. Great job!
Thanks a ton! Your game also rocks
Amazing! The audio design is top-notch! I sadly died by Frostling near the Darkbeam location. I'm not sure if that is the case, but I feel for a game like this there should be checkpoints since the battles can be very swingy (in typical megami tensei fashion). Great work overall!
Audio dev here, thank you for your kind comment!
Thanks a bunch! We unfortunately ran out of time developing the game's systems, and had to cobble everything together in a final release, which means we missed features such as checkpoints
Adding left and right handed keyboard controls was a nice touch! Ta
The audio and battles are on point! I thought the art was great, too, and I loved how y'all approached building the crawling experience differently from how our team did. I gave it about three runs, but I kept getting knocked out shortly after picking up my radio. 100% a skill issue on my part. This was really fun, and I loved seeing another dungeon crawler with a different, more traditional battle system baked into it. Glad y'all got this one into the jam!
This was fun! Felt very polished and great job nailing that NES feel!
Thank you, I'm glad you think it's polished haha!
A great dungeon crawler! I like the artstyle of this, nes feel is nailed! But i can't get past battle 2 tho because i suck at turn based things
Thanks for playing! It's not entirely a skill issue on your part - the battle system has some intricacies that need figuring out, and you will need to utilize them well in order to stand a chance. We included a tips section on the page last minute to cover up the fact that the game doesn't have a tutorial - consider giving it a look!
