The Jam is underway! What are you making? Sticky

Hello everyone! The Jam has officially begun, and if you're like me, you were totally going to start working on an entry right away... and you haven't yet. I'm curious to know what folks are thinking about making! In case it's a helpful jumping off point, I wanted to share what I'm working on - and what I'm thinking about working on, in a perfect world where I have time to do FIVE sets of five for the "Make 5" jam. (I will not have time.)

  • I've been kicking around the idea of some setting pieces for MOSAIC Strict for a while now, and this might be the perfect opportunity. I love the modular aspect of MOSAIC, and I'm trying to track down more content written in/for this system/format. I've been feeling drawn to sci fi novels lately, and I'd probably have some aspects of that genre in my collection. This is the "shorter" of my two main project ideas.
  • I found some awesome Affinity 2 pamphlet templates by Bammax Games, and the templates include a gatefold brochure, which I hadn't really considered for layout before. Now that it's in my head, though, I am toying with the idea of using the format for little TTRPG settings. This is the "longer" of my two main project ideas.
  • I love, love, LOVE hacking one-page games, and I think that even outside of the context of this jam, I've hacked Honey Heist five times. (Not all of them are on itch, though.) I'm thinking about a little set of hacks, though whether I hack another game five times or hack five different games remain to be seen. This is the idea that I definitely won't have time for, even though it's ironically the one I've made the most progress on so far.
    • I already did a Lasers and Feelings game this month, so IF I keep going, I could already be on my way to a set of five!
    • I'd be interested to know what your favorite one-page game systems are. No reason.

This isn't my resource but I'll admit it's one I refer back to constantly: The wonderful duo behind Shouting Crow have an itch collection that was made for the Below A Bad Moon jam once upon a time, and it has lots of short-game SRD references in it. I'm telling you, I go back to that collection all the time. It makes me wish it was easier to search for collections on itch. I should probably bookmark it now, while I'm thinking about it.

Here are some questions, if you want:

  1. What are you working on for the jam?
  2. What is the link you're envisioning?
  3. What can you do NOW to set yourself up for success as the month goes on?

Thank you for the resources!!

I'm considering making a set of games that use the same SRD, so they can be played interchangeably- meaning, each player at the table could use a separate game, and all still play together, just each with some of their own mechanics. Possibly a bit lofty but we'll see!

Cool!

I love that - and hey, maybe it's not so lofty at all! (I actually extended the jam deadline because I don't know about everyone else but my May has been WILD, so I am giving folks some extra time!)

Very cool!  I'll also share my SRD/CC game library in case it can be useful to anyone: /c/4035763/srds-hackables-creative-commons-gamessystems

I’ve ran a few homebrews with a system I came up with a long time ago (and I made up the rules on the fly while playing with my group) and I try to bring this system to paper now (I hope this is in the spirit of the jam, because the game basically existed for a few years now, but never got formalised). But it’s incredible hard for me to write down the rules in a concise way, this is my first TTRPG after all. :D Especially, because I know what I was thinking when creating the rules, but I can’t assume people can read my mind. The 5 aspect of my entry will be the base rule set plus 4 additional settings that all introduce a setting specific mechanic.

As a small spoiler. In my game you can play as an anthropomorphic farm animal on a nameless farm. The idea is that every type of animal runs a different organisation or service. Like Berta, the chicken is the queen. The cats run a black market, the pigs running the food distribution and so on. The game should feel a bit like a adult cartoon, where everything looks fine and dandy, but it is powered by dark humour and deadly adventures.

That is absolutely in the spirit of this jam AND I think that’s such a fun concept!!! Very excited to see what fun and trouble the farm animals are getting up to!

I just finalised the main ruiles. Now it’s time for the 4 extenstions. Woohoo

I'm thinking of creating a collection of 5 random tables, each where you roll 5 times on them to generate something, such as: Incomprehensible Quest Directions where you roll five times to get directions like: With the waning light of the winter sun, turn left past the forgotten memorial, travel west towards the last bastion, circle twice round the ruminating tree, then head into the heartwood. There you'll find what you seek.

I had several ideas for a suite of 5 connected ttrpgs. Unable to choose among them, I decided to write all the games. So I'll give you 20 game poems, that you can play as single Games or in a thematic Suite of 5; you can also put all the Suites together on the table and play them together, in a shared, fractal, asynchronous narration called the Grand Fractal (for a grand total of 25 games considering the optional rules).

I just submitted! My in-progress game needed some maps, so I used this jam as the deadline to get 5 maps done. Woo! I still have a couple more to nail down, but I do love me a deadline owed to someone else... Haha. Thanks for hosting such an open-ended jam! You rock! :)

I love this, I'm so glad it was useful to you!!! Congrats on getting your maps done. :) It sounds like this jam served you perfectly!
