First of all, thank you for sharing such a fun game.
The very first thing that came to my mind when I started playing was Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. I couldn't help but smile at such a faithful homage. (It's also one of my favorite NES games, and I've spent countless hours playing it.)
That said, the graphics and music are fantastic, and you've turned the inspiration into a game with its own unique charm. I'm really impressed by how much content you managed to create in such a short amount of time.
Due to time constraints, I stopped after defeating the Vampire Queen, but I'm looking forward to seeing what adventures this adorable little rabbit has ahead.
A few things stood out to me while playing. Collecting carrots by repeatedly defeating the same enemies started to feel a bit repetitive. (If there's a more efficient way to gather them, then please ignore this! Alternatively, a progression system such as leveling up might make the repetition feel more rewarding.)
Also, early in the game, I exited the cave from the lower exit without having the key, and I wasn't able to re-enter the cave afterward. I'm not sure if this is intended or a bug, but I had to restart from the beginning.
As for the Vampire Queen, I eventually defeated her while dodging her attacks, but I wasn't entirely sure what the actual victory condition was.
Even in its current state, this is already a wonderful game. With a little more polish, I think it has the potential to become an even more memorable one.
Thank you again for making and sharing it!
Thank you so much for your comment. I'm extremely happy that you got this far and gave the game a real chance. You're absolutely right; it lacked a lot of polish to make collecting carrots fun. In a future part of the game, it's possible to farm carrots from a mini-boss.
And the cave bug unfortunately went completely unnoticed by me. I did more testing with the game after a while, and I also had that problem. It seems it didn't happen every time, so it went unnoticed in the tests.
I hope to refine this game in the future and make it better and better.
Cute character sprites and good music! There seems to be a stray pixel a bit to the left of the rabbit when jumping and crouching while facing right during fights in the cave.
I think I know exactly what you're talking about, and I thought I had removed it; these things usually go unnoticed, haha.
Anyway, I'm glad you liked it.
This was a really impressive jam entry. I especially liked the atmosphere and all the different areas and character designs . It felt like a proper adventure rather than just a short jam game. Great job!
When the game jam was announced, I was brainstorming ideas, and I remembered one that had been tucked away in the back of my mind for years. This project was my first game; it wasn't perfect, it wasn't refined, but I wanted it to be an adventure I could be proud of having made.
I'm very happy you enjoyed it.
perfect game I really hope you make a part 2
Maybe someday, I'm glad you liked it.
Nice work. I loved the zelda 2 throwback and the music as well
Thank you very much for your support and kind words.
I really likes the Zela 2 inspirations here. I felt great to play, and I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of character variety in the game. The art and music are wonderful as well. Great Job!
I'm very happy that you enjoyed playing. Seeing some of the reviews, I understand that choosing Zelda 2 may have made it harder to improve in all areas, but the goal was always to bring back that feeling of playing this game again with a different perspective.
I'm glad you liked it.
Really great soundtrack and artwork!
Thank you very much for your kind words; we did our best to ensure that both of these factors were delivered excellently.
I love the Zelda 2 inspo, that game is pretty underrated in my opinion. I like the character designs and this really seems like it took a lot of work and effort to make. Awesome game :O
There were many sleepless nights, it was a lot of work xd, and I'm glad you enjoyed it.
This is a really cool game! love the artstyle, and you did an amazing work in such short time1 keep up the good work!
Thank you very much for your kind words and support.
Wow, impressive style and I love the world and character designs.
The appeal of the graphics and sound sets up strong expectations for gameplay, which I really tried to master. I spent around an hour trying to get to the vampire queen. I wanted to reach at least a point where I felt like I had made decent main-story progress. Unfortunately I was defeated in that castle so many times I had to end my journey there, but the world itself made me want to explore it.
My main feedback would of been to lower the opening difficulty some, and move some of the how to play dialogue into the starting town. Notably there was a line I didn’t read until the mouse camp about being able to duck under flying enemies that would of saved me some time.
Also the cat made me think I actually had to do that grind which took up the first half of my play. Maybe if it had clued me in at that moment that it was a suspiciously large amount of carrots I would of searched for other options sooner but I just went out and fought enemies and got like 20 game overs, lol.
That said, I still didn’t want it to hold my hand, just some clue. It was pretty authentic to NES feel to have to search out other options with no hand holding, so bonus points there for that.
If you want my feedback about combat changes I would say the player’s attack range is too short in the side scroll, and side scroll enemies appear very frequently in the graveyard area so despite being easier to manage they still become quickly too overwhelming. Also, in general I felt like the enemies had a lot of hit points. At least in the beginning part I played.
Overall great entry you really went all out on the style of the game and I can appreciate the vision behind that. I even tried some time with and without the crt filter. I noticed it seemed some art choices were made with the filter in mind but I couldn’t stare at it for too long before feeling disoriented. I don’t typically enjoy crt filters but I like to give everything in a project a chance and see the vision. Good work!
All your criticisms are spot on and highlighted all the thoughts I've had while watching friends play the game. The attack range isn't good, and there aren't enough indicators for many things to prevent the player from feeling disoriented. It's also much harder than I imagined.
I really appreciate your patience and I'm glad the world captivated you. I put a lot of love into creating the world, which is what I enjoy doing most.
Thank you very much for the feedback. It was my first project and I intend to improve it in the future, maybe even update it.
Insane amount of work in such a short time! Always loved Zelda 2. Also loved the variations on main theme, adapted into different areas.
My only complaint is, I got hardlocked and had to quit the game. Dashed through the mine to the south, didn't pick up anything, left mine via the exit in the south, then stuck in the little area, with the graveyard biome. Couldn't progress past the fence and the "lock" block, but the main problem is couldn't enter back into the mine from the door I just left. That's when I had to stop. Will definitely replay!
Wow, that's a strange bug, it's never happened before, but I wouldn't be surprised if it did. It was very difficult to get the scene transitions working. I'll definitely try to fix everything when the game jam is over. I hope you'll give the full game a chance in the future. Thank you very much for the feedback.
Wow, this is super polished and has a ton of content!
I love that is is inspired by Zelda II: The Adventure of Link!
And the boss battle perspective reminded me of MMBN and Everhood's battle system - a very welcome twist in gameplay!
Amazing work on this game! :D
Thank you very much for your comment and for giving the game a chance.
the game looks pretty good, especially the art, and i liked the different perspectives you get put into (like from top down view to a normal 2d view), but the attack range was a little bit too short so i kept getting hit by the enemies (especially that stinky bat), also the position that you get put into when going back the world view is a little awkward, since you get placed behind the place icons and i just move instantly to the left just to get back to into that place accidentally, the music could be a little bit improved since for me i felt it gets stale a lil after hearing it again after some time, the flashing colors when you die hurts the eyes a lil :') , but yeah i suggest that you make the enemy hitboxes a little bit smaller, and maybe also make the player's attack range a bit bigger, other than that i liked all the dialogue and the conversations with the other species :) and i can say the baby mama rabbit is a 10/10 ;) ;)
if you got some free time maybe check out my game and drop your feedback :)
Thanks for the feedback, these are all time-related issues. I plan to update when the jam is over. Thank you, and I'm glad you enjoyed it.
my feedback is about the dialogue cus i got kinda stuck in a dialogue loop trying to start the adventure!
i tried both options but i got stuck back in the tutorial -- the intro cutscene text was also kinda slow cus you couldn't press Z to skip. And lastly it wasn't a big deal at first, but once the game started, the small dialogue windows had animated text reveal jumping lines constantly while it was being revealed which was distracting.
If you're using RichTextLabel this fixes it:
From what i saw, it has a very interesting combat system and the art was great! I also loved the theme song that played throughout
Unfortunately, this wasn't obvious, but you can skip cutscenes with the Delete key on your keyboard; it's on the game's page, but there should have been more in-game indication. Were you playing with a controller or something? Although it works with a controller, the game isn't recommended for use with one, as many things are activated with the analog stick up.
But there was also a lack of indication that the player could exit through the door. I don't know if you did this, and I agree about the dialogue; it bothered me. The whole dialogue system could be much more refined, but it was already good enough to convey things.
I would say that one problem with this game is the lack of refinement. I wanted to add content and experiment, it was fun, and thank you very much for the feedback.
Amazing game, loved the art, the music and there's a lot of stuff to do, great work!
Thank you very much for your kind words
"And so, the three terrifying creatures met their fitting end at the hands of a little rabbit."
What a ride! The game looks and sounds great (all the bosses look notably cool) and all the villages and dialog bits there are cool. The amount of content is huge and every piece of it is worth it. The different gameplay phases all control well and I specially appreciated how the difficulty is finely tune, whatever the type of gameplay the game is always hard but never insane, so I enjoyed every sequence a lot.
Thanks for sharing!
WOW, YOU FINISHED THE GAME! I'm glad you enjoyed it. When the game jam ended and I had time to test the game and have other people test it, I encountered several difficulty issues and even design problems that prevented me from guiding the player in the best possible way. I wish I had paid more attention to each aspect of the platforming combat, but on some occasions the experience is contained and well-distributed, as it was for you. I'm truly very happy.
Thank you very much for your feedback; it will certainly motivate me to produce even more.
very cool game, nice fighting system, you did a great job!
Thank you very much for your kind words.
This game would probably be awesome if either it was scoped down to fit the deadline or had more time in the oven. As it stands, it's maybe OK, but full of unrealized potential.
I'm curious, how far into the game did you get?
I got to the mines, and reached the mine village before dying a couple times and admittedly losing interest.
I'm sorry you played so little; the game's potential grows with each new advancement, along with your personal improvement. I just wanted to better understand the criticism of unrealized potential.
I think it lacked some visual effects, or even a difficulty adjustment, but I'd say the game has the necessary potential for a game jam.
Anyway, I'm glad you played it. I'll test yours soon and give the full game a chance.
Well, it's true that your game is more than just the section leading up to the mines. But, it's also true that it's hard for me to want more of something when it is underdeveloped at its core, and that was what I felt when I played your game. I have no doubt that the game would have piqued my interest if the main gameplay style was executed well. But instead of focusing quality into one area, you had to spread it thin to implement the grid-based battles as well. As a result, neither of those gamemodes are fun at their core, and this is the potential I was referring to, not the player's ability unlocks as the game progresses - I don't have a reason to want to get those, because if a game isn't fun at its core, the last thing I want to do is play more of it. If it's any consolation, I don't think it's necessarily your fault as a developer that it is like this. If you had more time to make it, or managed to scope down (which is its own skill), the core gameplay would probably rock my socks, even if it was just a prototype (hell, probably especially if it was a prototype, considering how important the concept of "minimum viable product" is to a game). One other nice thing I can say is that the art does look very good, it's mostly just the gameplay holding the game back for me.
Thank you for the feedback, this is my first completed project, I hope to improve over time.
The soundtrack is spot on!
Our composer didn't have much time, but even so, he excelled in every aspect, capturing the game's atmosphere extremely well.
Thanks for the kind words! As said, I sadly didn't have quite the time to flesh out the OST to the extent I wanted to, but the end result is at least good enough :)
Wow! This game really impresed me, well done.
I hope you enjoyed the whole experience.
