From the jump, this had little chance of grabbing me as I see the "aimless young adult in small town" set-up extremely overdone. So, imagine my surprise when this ended up being the least of my problems with it.
Pyrena has a lot to like. It manages to lift this blasé premise into something more unique through the use of well-done visuals and a simple, but engaging supernatural mystery. However, it also has missteps that harmed my experience.
Pyrena's soundscape is far too muted for what it is. I didn't find it too bad for most scenes, but the impressive, animated sequences lose so much impact by the complete lack of sound effects. You can probably pin this on the limitations of the jam, but it's still a problem.
Another issue I had was an "intrusive flashback" happening in the middle of the climax. In this case, a moment of tension is severely undercut by the MC going on an extended flashback that completely spoils the mystery right before it's resolved. I see this as particularly bad when there were perfectly good spots for this flashback (specifically, between the game's days) that could feed the mystery rather than harm the reveal.
Still, Pyrena's visual feats are great. They don't quite make for the problems in my opinion, but they made for a pleasant surprise. If you don't have a problem with "legacy of NITW"-type plots, you'll enjoy this one more than I have.
