Fun and interesting, I had something similar in mind when thinking about ideas for my jam entry... (something like this would fit my 3d chess engine well) I also like how you can both shoot with the pieces and "captures" are banzai like crashes, good idea and fits the theme of space ships!

Very interesting game! I would like to suggest adding an ingame control system, or maybe mouseover hints to ship names (ally AND enemy) if you would like. Very neat scifi take on chess!

You can click on the ship to see the name (and moves). Making it react to mouseover sounds like a good idea that would make the game less tedious. Thank you!

This is a fantastic sci-fi spin on chess! Incorporating piece orientation and a three-step turn structure—move, orient, and shoot—completely changes how you space your fleet.

The ship mechanics are super clever. Bumping into an enemy causes a mutually assured destruction collision, meaning your actual weapon choice is everything. Love the tactical asymmetry here: the Repulsor Hammerhead pushing pieces into each other, the delayed area-of-effect threat of the Antimatter Torpedo, and the sneaky Matter Reconfigurer hijacking enemy units from behind.

Having to balance a mandatory shooting phase where you can accidentally blast your own units adds a brilliant layer of tension. Awesome jam prototype!

I like how the extra complexity fits naturally with the sci-fi theme. It really does feel like chess from the future.
