Please don't be discouraged by the ratings and stick around to the end of this review.

Polish/Completeness: 2/5

We gave this 2 star because the game feels like it came out half baked. At first we didn't even

realize we were supposed to fall down the pitfall given that there were no indicators to go down.

Later when we read Sawed Off's review we realized that there's a "boss" area, so we continued trying to progress and that's how we managed to get to the later levels. We really didn't get what

to do after the boss fight either, because once we beat him, the gray platform in the arena didn't open.

Creativity: 3/5

We liked the design of the game, reminiscent of Limbo, maybe that's why we were happy with it, but still there was a slight problem with the outlines of the line art being too low resolution, still, pretty neat. Despite the pitfall getting a negative light from us in the Polish section, we can't lie -- it's pretty creative.

Fun/Engagement: 1/5

Despite the previous two rating categories, unfortunately we didn't feel that much engaged in the game given that there's one animation for walking and even then, it's like you're sliding on the floor, the fighting still forces the player to exchange hits which makes it very two dimensional. Not too much to add here.

With all of the above stated, don't be discouraged with this review. We were very happy to see this game despite it's shortcomings, this game reached a point that most games don't - it was submitted. It's a very tough thing to be a game developer and you should view this submission as an achievement. If we recall correctly, there were 30 something people that joined this game jam, and only 5 entries. Keep going at it, we're interested in what your next game would be. Good job!

This is always tough.

I don't want to criticize someone's first game, while I still have to be critical and give this a score.

Polish / Completeness

The game isn't complete. I defeated the "boss" and got stuck. I could look past this if it were super "juiced," polished and slick.

However, I can try to give some feedback:

I think the combat is the weakest part. With the platforming and theme/story being the more compelling aspects. "Loss of Containment" is a perfect example of this. Really strong platforming mechanics, with the added story layer, can bring you a long way.

With the reduced scope, you can dedicate more time to the core mechanics. A few concepts to look into would be:

- Variable jump height, aka Mario jump

- Coyote frames/ledge forgiveness, a brief buffer where the player can still jump after running off the edge of a platform.

- Movement acceleration

This would give you a really solid foundation for your player controller.

2/5

Creativity

The core idea is there. We had a similar vision, and you were able to execute better on the theme and goals of the game jam.

Focusing more on that would have made this a better experience, in my opinion.

3/5

Fun/Engagement

I personally did not find this one super fun or engaging.

2/5

Overall

Don't let a low score discourage you. Making games is hard. If you enjoyed yourself while you made this, that's what matters. Keep at it, and you'll improve with each iteration.

Props for sharing. It took me a long time before I ever shared anything publicly.

Developer

As soon as he recovers from his all-nighter, I’ll let him know. :-)

Developer (1 edit)

While produced by me, this was made by KennyLumpia almost entirely as his first game. All praise and credit go to him.
