A surprisingly dark story for something with artwork this cute. I really do have to applaud the writing decision to have the main characters be the kind of people they are. Mary is stuck in an unfortunate situation and we can't help but empathize with her, even if what she's doing (leading other girls into a bad situation with her brother) is an objectively terrible thing to do, so we actually end up rooting against her. It's a complex topic and I do think the topic was handled with the respect it deserves. It's a really intriguing story hook and I'm glad this VN exists since it must have been brave to tell this kind of story. That being said, though the story is interesting, there are several issues with the way it's told, honestly. The sprites are a bit *too* simplistic, lacking many expressions that would give this story the gravity it deserves. An example is when Mary confesses to Lucy and they argue. Their faces are basically expressionless and it takes away a lot of tension from the story. There are also some moments in the story that strike me as trying to drive the point home a little too hard. Like, the folklore theme is represented through the Greek gods, and Mary compares herself to Hera, who's stuck in a shitty relationship with Zeus and can only take revenge on the women he sleeps with. This technically fulfills the brief when it comes to folklore but I think it's a bit on the nose. There's a scene where some anonymous students are gossiping about what Mary does for her brother, which strikes me as an unsubtle way of telling the audience the truth about their situation, when I felt I was already capable of piecing it together from the other hints. Again, I do like the story, I just think it could have been stronger if it was more subtle in its storytelling, and the emotional moments could have been more impactful as well. It also cuts off pretty abruptly at the end (of either route), which I think doesn't give me a lot of time to digest the story, though the horror and disgust is there at least. It's still a really creative and original story.
