Nice! I really like the idea going with the balloon string.

Nice one! I did a quick recording of my gameplay in case it's helpful: Craballoon by Lerg Bwo | Cap Recording
A fun simple mechanic executed really well, perfect for a game jam. I like the vertical awareness needed while navigating the level, and also learning to pass over to other crabs efficiently in a left>right>left>right rhythm felt super rewarding. I liked the drawn assets too are nice.
When I was launched into the game, I was a bit confused and died quite quickly without being able to figure out what I was doing wrong. It was pretty easy to figure out what to do, but took me a few attempts before I went "aha I got it now". I wonder even for the first attempt at each level, having a 'ready' screen where all crabs are frozen until the first movement might be nice. Or even a smaller tutorial level as Level 1, with 2 other crabs which spawn quite far away.
I had lots of fun playing, excellent work!
I love your idea, you must be a genius to come up with such a clever concept for a three-hour game jam with a crab theme. Good job! Very fun experience!
Very clever mechanic, and not that easy! I found myself wanting to replay to clear the levels faster, it was fun :D Congrats!
Amazing core mechanic! I’m loving these three different aspects:
-
Forgivingness: if one doesn’t cut perfect first time, one has still some chance, but has to concentrate more! Very dynamic and original!
-
At your own risk: one can evade (low risk) or attempt to give the balloon (risk of being touched too). Coming close to the other crabs at the right moment decides over failure and success.
-
Geometrically scales: dividing the line or changing its length naturally scales the game difficulty only using simple division and multiplication. Amazing for its simplicity!
I spent way too much time playing this game, well done. Fits the theme great. I like how the string shortens Fun.
Interesting concept, I like that this game really utilises the crab not only as a visual, but as a mechanic as well: the baloon pops because the crabs have pointy claws (so an extra star for the theme there) :)
The only criticism I really have is that sometimes one of the crabs spawns on the baloon and there's nothing you can do to avoid dying.
