TOLD you I would play it before jam ends. AAA music, AAA voice acting, and I love the theme and enjoyed all the references to Greek myth :) :) really cool experience for me to end the jam on, all 5 stars
Thank you!
I really liked the voice acting and story and vibe. It was very moody and cool. I liked helping out the random passersbys, like giving the note to the lyreman and the apple to the starving man. I think it was quite immersive, especially for a game jam game! I thought the combat was okay, although I think I may be misunderstanding it? What is the purpose of ever blocking damage if you can't attack in the same turn and gain no buff from blocking? Its like, okay, I can block all damage this turn and attack next turn, or I can just attack this turn. What's the difference? I also quite liked the upgrades I was getting and how it was diagetic to the game and story! Although I'm not sure what the yellow notch did. I rolled it once and it didn't seem to do anything!
Anyways, solid entry, really liked the story and voice acting and vibes!
Thank you for your review! The benefit to blocking is if the enemy has a particularly strong attack lined up, or if you do not have a strong attack lined up and are waiting to roll it. You are also correct that the yellow notch does nothing, it is a junk card that serves as a debuff to your spinner.
I WILL play and rate this later when I get back to home before the jam ends, it looks fun!
Thank you and I hope you enjoy it!
Very fun
This game is pretty fun!! I honestly wish the stats were a bit more visible, so it was clear what "grown stronger" and such meant. I noticed by the end that I was killing enemies even with a 1, so it seems like a flat damage buff or something. The little story segments are super cool too! I completed the DETERMINATION "sidequest" and I felt like the reward for that was awesome. Too bad the squid rolled a 30 and killed me when it only had 1hp left LOL. Overall, very fun, just a little too nebulous in terms of mechanics imo.
They definitely could’ve been a lot more clear, I thought leaving them vague would make it more immersive but overall I think that was the wrong decision. In general, the buffs are multiplicative to your attack/defense, max health bonuses at the cost of some health, or regular healing; while the debuffs are divisive to your attack/defense, straight damage, or a single example of adding a worthless card to your hand (this excludes the standard deck-modifying events). Glad you had fun!
Wait hold on there was regular healing? I must've gotten unlucky because I don't think I healed a single time lol. A lot of "you felt stronger" and "you felt sturdier" which I interpreted as attack and defense buffs haha
Correct! There’s only one form of healing IIRC coming from grabbing the apple from Tantalus
Really cool game! Quality voice acting is an unexpected surprise for a jam game, and it doesn't disappoint. The voice lines are well-written and well-acted, and the little _Oooh!_ moment when I realized who the characters were was very nice.
The combat was cool; I liked that there was a balance between randomness and choice. I did find the interface a little bit confusing at first and ended up accidentally skipping my first turn before I figured out what to do; maybe worth requiring an arrow being connected somewhere before allowing registering the turn? I might have also preferred slightly smaller ranges for the damage numbers, but that's just me. It all also felt really carefully balanced, a fun little dance. That is, until the tentacle, which felt like it was designed to be effectively an insta-kill with that 1-32 attack and no way to heal. But if you were going to keep developing this post-jam, the tentacle feels like a standard early rogue-lite skill gate where you need a couple of deaths/powerups to get past it, if you wanted to go that direction.
I also got a kick out of some of the placeholder menu/tutorial text.
All-in-all, this is a really solid game, and I had fun with it (went through a couple of runs). There are really solid bones here. Kudos to everyone involved!
Really glad you enjoyed it! The tentacle probably is overtuned, at least with how many upgrades you can get by that point in the game—even if you get the 3x damage/defense boost it still is a tough fight at full health. But you’re absolutely correct about the rest, and I appreciate your feedback!
The writing was amazing. The actual combat was decently simple, but the endurance aspect of it created a lot of depth as you went further into a run.
definitely one of the more unique submissions! I loved the setting being around Sisy and other Greek mythology characters, I managed to meet quite a few in my first run but the two that stood out to me were Orpheus and Eurydice due to them having an interaction based on which order you meet them in which I loved, that alone is enough to justify a replay to see the possible different interactions between all the characters. and the voice acting was honestly amazing, I could listen to it all day, which really helped cause I couldn't even bother reading the first screen explanation lol though I did figure out how the combat worked pretty easily, it was all pretty clear so that's a plus. and though the combat is pretty unique I do feel like it would've been better to have some more control rather than most of it being down to RNG, and a way to heal would be nice. Oh, and the combat music is short but honestly a banger, I never got tired of it lol
great job overall, I can see the effort put in and I really wanna see where ya'll can take this after the jam, good luck :)
It's amazing how you had time to include Eurydice, Achilles, Tantale and all those myth characters in a way that makes sense: interactions with them being references to the way they died shows you know your stuff. When I died after my first run (which lasted reasonably enough for me) and saw the ending screen, I deduced that there's no real end to this game, which makes sense because MC is literally Sisyphus. Voice actor did a really good job, game is undoubtedly serious, what I'd suggest would be to add ways to heal or upgrade between fights since this has a rogue like feel (unless I missed some way to do that already in there). Also the fights could use less RNG: the wheel combines getting a speed value and landing on attack/defence with bounds. Would have preferred if the wheel landed on fixed numbers instead of number ranges. Oh and btw the scope-creeping clearly shows 😂.
Still a great submission for this jam, good job!
Cool game, very unique mechanic for the combat. Liked having the choice on what to do and how to go about the encounter. Two things, I would’ve liked a little more depth in the combat since most of the game is the combat, and secondly, I would’ve liked more visuals (for the story bits or the combat itself). While the spin animations were cool, the feel of the combat still felt a bit lackluster.
Honestly though where it lacks in those, it makes up for in the voice acting. I absolutely loved the voicing in this game for two reasons:
Also I love the over-arching Sisyphean theme of the game.
Solid entry!
The lack of depth in the combat is definitely something we would address in a full release of this game, a lot more was planned but had to be cut because of scoping issues. Thank you for your feedback!
Fun pocket battles! Just so you know, this runs fine on android mobile in browser. Great submission!
Really good to hear! We didn’t actually test if it worked on mobile but are glad to know it does 💙
Really interesting game! I find it very hard though since the enemy gains more wheels and you can only defend against one thing at a time, so i felt like i was always on the back foot, but i enjoyed the art and the va was a nice surprise!
This was really great! A couple things:
- I really wanted to play until I lost or got far enough to feel like there was a win condition, but there was a bug in which an enemy's second wheel spinned endlessly, so I got locked out basically T.T
- When first starting, it wasn't clear I needed to draw the arrows on the left to the enemy. Even with a giant text box of text for tutorial, this part just wasnt clear. I was able to get it figured out and I'm sure this would be easy enough to polish post-jam if you decide to do more with this.
- I was NOT expecting full on VA for this, so kudos to have had the time to do so!
Overall, enjoyable little thing :)
Hi! The infinite spinning is unfortunately a known bug that appears to have been re-introduced, and as we’re past the bugfixing period I can’t fix it, I’m horribly sorry you encountered it. Once the jam is over, a hotfix will be released ASAP to ensure that doesn’t occur, if you would like to fully experience it afterwards!
I’ll make note of what you said on the arrows, that’s good feedback :)
Thank you for your review, I’m glad you enjoyed our game <3
Everything I do is a gamble (╥﹏╥) Isn't that what life is, thought...
I am amazed by how much story you've managed to cram in here! More and more new things just keps popping up and that make the whole experience super engaging!
also love the grey block of into text at the start, it adds charm :p
Great game! I like how you made blocking have importance despite the one-action-per-turn idea by allowing you to fish for lower enemy damage rolls, although the spinner value ranges are a bit too RNG imo (also the 1~32 attacks for the boss(?) are wild lol). Presentation is great, and the music is also very nice and adds a lot to the atmosphere.
Thank you! Yeah, it definitely needs a lot of balancing work, haha 😅
Nice voice acting and gameplay. happy to be the underworld mailman..
I think I stole that poor man's apple 6 times... would steal again
Fun game! impressive content and voice acting for a jam aswell, embarrassed to admit that it took me getting attacked quite a few times to realize I was the one on the left, but other than that it was really fun with an intriguing story!
Oh and the art for the credits menu was also cool!
This game has given me an existential crisis :D
I don’t know if it’s because I played on web, but there were some nasty mixels that might bother people who like to complain about trivial stuff (me).
Frankly, I don’t think the block of text at the beginning was necessary, as the gameplay is intuitive enough.
Lastly, the events are very well written. At some point, I was doing the fights just to get the next event. They do tend to repeat though. That wouldn’t be a problem if I didn’t get the same event back to back.
Thank you for your review! I added the block of text because some of our initial playtesters were pretty confused as to the mechanics, but I’m glad you found it intuitive. The mixels are a fair point, our coordination wasn’t perfect and there were some last-minute scale tweaks that needed to be done to get things looking correct.
As for the events repeating—that has actually been a pretty nasty bug, I keep fixing it and it keeps springing up again. It should be gone for good, this time. Thank you for pointing it out!
