With the way the van-headed mech waddles around with the music in the background (specifically when the synth lead is playing), the floppy-legged enemies, and the LORE blurb, the humor element was a success for me lol. I agree that some more upgrade diversity would be good and maybe some enemy diversity too, but I recognize that getting even more creative with builds and enemies is a lot to achieve on top of building a base game within a jam period. The difficulty also does ramp up quite a bit if you keep playing, and as it stands the upgrades are pretty good - there's synergy between the heat, firerate, pierce, damage and bounce upgrades. If you build enough into bouncing, you can start covering the whole map in projectiles and kill a lot of stuff by accident, but that does add the visual overwhelm after a certain point once enough enemies are spawning.

I thought the blur honestly softened the edges kind of nicely. The text was probably the part that really suffered in the web build.

My run got snubbed when I got stuck on a pillar at an inopportune moment, which seems to happen pretty much any time you come in contact with one of them. It only ever took walking the opposite direction to get unstuck (was never permastuck), but I was met with 3 large projectiles simultaneously and a small army of little meatballs.

Nice submission, I had a good time with it!

Fun!  It's simple, and the VS-esque structure is well trod ground but executed well.  There's a reason this gameloop has proliferated to so many games, it's very solid, intuitive and addictive.  The game itself doesn't feel finished (and I mean beyond the missing art), it's lacking in upgrade diversity and enemy diversity. But everything that is here works quite well and as intended. The truck-mech design is a lot of fun and reminds me of the 'Methane-Wanzer' from Front MIssion 3.  The game is tuned too easy, at least early on-- I got to ~17 before stopping because there really was no challenge or variety to the gameplay.

Absolutely a solid foundation if you choose to develop further.  I'd suggest putting some wacky stuff or tough tradeoffs in the upgrade choices to keep things interesting. Some basic pathfinding to help the enemies get around obstacles would be nice too.

Nice work, solid jam game, great job!

I like this mecha a lot, and the low rez renderding makes it really charming ^^  There needs to be a bit of impact when hitting the (quite funny and well designed) ennemies; like an explosion or a color.

I didn't get any sound on my machine?

Feels good to play, a bit of a power fantasy as the game isn't very difficult. Around level 27 I found out I could just stand in one spot and blindfire while the bullets bounced around the map and killed everything.

I enjoyed the premise the most I'd say, that van turned into a mech by some insane guy really drew me to trying the game out.

Overall, fun little experience. Good job!

Would you believe me if I said I didn't playtest much (especially later into the game)? I know I would! (but then again I made it...)

From my experience at around level 30 the enemies only then start becoming a challenge on all fronts, exept health. Why? The enemies don't have enough max health and you gain wayyy too much damage with damage and attack speed upgrades (but attack speed kinda sucks, because of the heat increase being greater than the attack speed increase). Good news: I took some time to balance it and make it more enjoyable. Bad news: I did it after the submission period ended, so the balance tweaked (plus a little bit extra) version will only be avaliable after the rating period has ended.

I'm glad you enjoyed my little creation -- thank you!

Very fun idea, good design of the mech (had a chuckle reading the lore). I got up to level 30 :)

Attack of the killer beans : the movie : the game !

Really fun little roguelite arena shooter, i liked the progression system, and the bouncy shots felt like a really cool upgrade that paired well with the level design.

Also the idea of a combat mech made out of an old van is equal part hillarious and genius XD

only negative point i’d say but it’s not really your fault, is the blurryness of the web version( knowing the direction unity took in recent years i suppose it’s probably some unpatched feature of the engine or something that butchered your build ). but the windows version sorks just fine.

Good job ^^

Developer(+1)

Thank you!

The mech being a van came from me being unable to draw/model a mech and having a low poly van model with a minigun lying around that I repurposed. it's also fitting, because it is very much something Ronnie would do.

Yeah the blurryness is most likey a bug to do with how I am achieving the low resolution look (rendering camera to render texture). I want to try to find a fix for the issue that I can release after the rating period is over, but it'll be a pain because of how loonnngggg it takes to build the web build with Unity.

No problem :)

Well it was a clever design, even more so if you did it by repurposing assets you had around XD

Like i said i don’t blame ya i don’t know much about how things work with unity but with the direction they seem to go these days i can only wish you the best of luck cause i don’t think they’re gonna make things any easier for their users :/

best mecha design  of this jam, nothing else to say

I love the player and enemy designs. I can't believe beans would do this :(
The combat and progression are satisfying, maybe a little on the easy side, but it definitely works. I really enjoyed the backstory you wrote as well.

Developer

"Mega slop is evil and wants all your money, so why aren't we putting regulations in place against such companies to protect our people?" -- Some guy advocating against the slop, probably.

All jokes aside, thank you for enjoying my submision!

I didn't really playtest until after the jam ended, but I'm working on it! The enemies are very squishy in the current version and damage upgrades way too strong. Right now I have a newer build in progress for when after the rating period is finished that is more balanced and will have less placeholder gray boxes.

I generally think of the backstory/lore of games/projects I work on -- even if most of the time they end up taking a more lighthearted and silly direction, with some notes of underlying seriousness (not at all a bad thing! and a lot of people love that kind of writing). I really enjoyed writing the backstory, so I am glad to hear people are enjoying reading it!

Simple but fun. I was a bit confused at first because there doesn't seem to be a visual tell of when the enemies are being hit by your bullets (something like a small explosion or them flashing red), but this might be due to the blurriness in the web version.

Developer(+1)

Thanks for the feedback :)

You would be correct, there is no visual tell of enemies being hit -- there is only audio feedback. It is something I should add, as while only audio feedback might be good enough for some poeple, it isn't for everyone (and is rather inaccessible). I shall work on it for a new build after the rating period has ended.
