Your thoughts on this Jam ?

Now that the jam is getting close to the end of the voting period, I was curious to hear everyone's thoughts about it.

Personally, I really enjoyed this jam. Since I participated solo, I'm happy with both what I managed to create and the ratings I've received.

I developed my game in Unreal Engine like 138 other participants, but because of that, my game isn't playable in the browser and has to be downloaded. Given that, I'm genuinely happy to have reached 20 ratings on my little project ^^"

This was the third game jam I've entered solo. From my perspective, one of the things I appreciated the most was the community here, especially during the rating phase. People have been friendly, kind, and supportive, which made the experience even better.

What about you? What did you think of this jam?

(P.S. I made this little game -> I'd appreciate it if you even just took a quick look, even views on it makes me happy ^^")

Hey! This was my third jam, too, and I probably created my best game yet, thanks to the fact that I was actually a little late. It all happened because my team and I weren't getting along very well, so I ended up moving to another team and trying to make my own game, but everything went awry, and I ended up enjoying the chaos and tension. I made the game in Godot in just the remaining two days (to be more precise, I spent about 7 hours on it, since I took breaks and wasn't really into it). But damn, during this jam, I realized that YOU NEED TO MAKE SIMPLE GAMES, not masterpieces. This was a very valuable lesson for me, since my previous games were low-rated due to overly complicated gameplay. Anyway, if you're interested, click. I wish everyone good luck and growth in your projects thanks to jams like these!

Hello,

This is also my 3rd game jam.  For what it is worth I feel like I have gotten better for every one that I have done.  I think it is absolutely nuts that 14,000+ people signed up, and 6,000+ finished games.  Just the sheer audience here has made Spinsanity my best release so far (it basically outperformed my last itch.io release in 5 days what took my last game 5+ months!).  Everyone has been great about giving constructive feedback and useful advice!

"My game isn't playable in the browser and has to be downloaded" - Unfortunately this is a kiss of death for any game jam, not just this one.  It adds a lot of pain points:

1) The browser might stop the download saying "Not many people have downloaded this, are you sure?!"
2) Windows Defender might stop you from even opening the file
3) While I'm sure there aren't many bad actors, the threat is always in the back of the mind "Maybe this is malware."
The first two you have to manually override.  It isn't hard but it's just an extra step, and a place for someone to say no.

I know this issue with developing on Unreal engine ^^"
That's why I'm happy with my 20+ reviews even tho windows scream "IT COULD BE DANGEROUS".

Other than that, I really like your game !
It's really fun while being simple, with the leaderboard giving it an "Alive" feeling.

Thank you!

I was unaware that Unreal has no web export capabilities, but it makes sense considering the engine's size and overhead.  I work with Godot and Unity myself

Hey!

This is my first solo jam and I have been loving it! The community is really lovely and engaged with rating etc. It has been such a pleasure to play so many incredible games and find out what it takes to make a full (although small) game from start to finish. 10/10 game jam!

I am also really happy with the game I made, Cart Wars, as I got everything I wanted to into it. I plan on continuing work on it by learning through feedback (so maybe you could add some in the comments?). Thanks and good luck!

Hi there,

this is my second game jam.

It was the first time i actually talked to other game devs in the voicechannels, talking about and showing each others progress even during the developement, which was really inspiring, motivating and helpful. On one occasion, i could even give some technical advice, which for me, as a beginner programmer, was quite an event :D

I really enjoyed the itch community as well and i was even able to watch 3 different YouTubers play my game live on stream, which was really a unique experience!

Unfortunately, i also have to consider the fact that i was not able at all to work on my regular projects while participating. It was a great experience, but i don't think i will do more then one or two game jams per year...

PS: In case you wanna check out my game: https://chillzombie.itch.io/survive-a-game-jam

Hey! This was my first game jam, and also the first time making a game (if we don't count the tiny assignments at the university :D). I've really enjoyed it, everyone was super nice in their ratings! Also I'm not really a big gamer in general, used to play only a few specific games, so seeing everyone's ideas was super exciting and found quite a few games that had a great hook. :))

During the rating I've mostly played the browser games as I'm usually on my work laptop which should not have random executables running on it. I've also taken the time to download a few on my PC (always running the virus scanner before starting, you can never be too catious :D), but it's definitely easier to just start something in the browser.

I haven't been able to join a game jam (or really properly work on any games) for a while, so this was definitely needed even if my game was a bit mid at best. It was a lot of fun just working on something again (and a great practice run for the gmtk jam happening soon too).

The games I've played in this jam have been unusually great. I don't think I've ever given so many 4s and 5s in a single jam before.

Cool to hear you got 20 ratings on a download-only game. I'm pretty sure that's above the median, which is all that really matters (scoring wise at least, of course getting feedback from a larger pool of people matters in the long run). I'm pretty sure there are older versions of unreal that allow for web exports, I know I've played browser games made in unreal before. I don't know enough about the engine and its developers to know if those older versions are at all similar to the contemporary version (or even still accessible) though.

This is my first time ever joining a jam. At first I didn't know how to interpret the theme so I started panicking but decided that panicking would get me no where, so I spent some few days thinking about the theme and finally came up with Idea Guy. It took some time but I finally got a basic structure of the game and added visual and sound, then I proceeded to upload it but I had no idea on how to get the viewport dimensions correctly and some UI elements were not showing so I started panicking again(I think you can see a pattern) I couldn't upload a fixed version because my Internet sucks so I was sure that I would get 0 plays, but my first review came in and it was very positive and constructive it made me smile knowing that someone played my game even with all those flaws and liked it.

I guess what I'm saying is that the jam taught to appreciate the the little things and to probably test stuff before uploading 😅

Thanks JuniperDev for the opportunity
