couldn't figure out how to open the shed door. it looked like there was some piece of wood stuck behind it and it didn't budge beyond a certain amount
the camera lag feels awful, please turn it off by default

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing! I will do something about that lag.
... btw it's a pull door. I will make it open less in that direction.

Intriguing little game! The long car ride to the hotel was fun. The camera being able to detect ghosts was cool (i found two, not sure if there are more or not). The time of day system was well done- the way the light streamed into the hotel entrance was very cool. I am interested to see how this progresses.

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you for playing! You're the first to notice that camera reveals spookies! (That I know of)

i think i did everything the game had to offer (reached the hotel and turn the power on). there's so much jank and unfinished stuff that i dont really think i should point it out because you already know.

i havent played many games like this and i found myself very immersed. jumping over that fence on the road and getting a music jingle was peak.

i only managed to deal with the spiders reliably with the water btw, nothing else seemed to work.

also shooting water while looking down and walking forward causes you to jerk around like you're hitting the water colliders or something lol.

But yeah this is an ultra rough sketch but i think this can be a very nice game

Developer(+1)

Thank you for playing!
Yeah I know it's rough, I have a lot of work cut out for me to fix it up. If you like games like this, Voices of The Void was an inspo, as well as Infra .

There is one last surprise that you may have missed: The boiler room doors were locked in the basement, but turning on the power caused them to blow open. You can walk in through the steam, or turn off the power now to see what's going in there :>

Thought the controls were ok.

A fair amount of jank involving collisions.

Really need more feedback regarding the "press E to interact" part of the game. I felt like I couldn't get the door to the shed open, or get out of my seat in the van. All I could do was press E to hope it worked but there wasn't really a visual indicator to show that it was an option in that instance.

The laptop was neat.

Thank you for playing!

I will update the instructions. Also, thank you for a video. Super helpful to see how your experience went!

Developer (1 edit)

It's Escape to exit the car seat btw. The idea is you can still interact with a few things while driving.
A lot of people miss the tutorial text, need to find a way to make it clearer.

Submitted(+1)

Ah that makes sense. I think I must have just assumed it was E, I totally forgot the tutorial text. I wonder if you could have it present contextually while you're driving.

Developer

Yeah I've been thinking of a way to do that. Everyone misses the text when it's throw at you like that. Right now I'm leaning to small text that appears at the bottom right and fades away. Should only be on the first level so it's not annoying. I would prefer a diagetic solution where something in-game tells you a bit better, but alas

there's a lot of issues in this demo:

performance keeps dropping hard for seemingly no reason, I felt fps dropping and heard my fan go crazy, eventually I toggled on fps in the middle of recording

movement feels off, even with the cinematic camera disabled I didnt feel like my character was responding to my actual movements

lack of direction? I had no idea what I was supposed to do, I just kept pushing trying to find a reason to play, cleaned some floors, went off the woods, drove around, explored many empty rooms in a mansion

the mansion itself has a lot of terrain bugs, stairs that dont connect, machines that you can clip through, walls that dont fully close in corners, grass that clips inside the building, floors without texture so you see the skybox.

mini issues: I was able to pick up items and jump on top of them, I did it fairly early in the recording. At one point the UI says to use '2' for bug spray but thats the wrong key. The keybind helpers also clip through walls so they're hard to read at the start of the game.

All that said, the main issue is lack of direction, as a player I didnt know what I was meant to do

I want to say that the surf map part brought me some memories from two decades ago even when I couldnt do it, it was nice

Thank you for playing and your video!
I love videos and you're the first. The feedback you gave says a lot more actually than you think it might.
I am devastated that there were frame drops for you, I spent a ton of time optimizing, so sucks to see it, but thank you for showing it in the video so I know where to focus next.
As for your main issue about direction, it's 100%  my fault that you didn't find it: the guy in the bathroom has a tutorial quest, and your laptop gets emails with directions.
