My girlfriend was sitting next to me for the whole playtest seission and this is the only game she said “oh that’s cute, this looks fun” - so that counts for something. And I have to agree, what a blast! Congratulations.
Ok I'm just playing this on the last day of rating and I have to give it all of the stars, and added it to my favorites' colleciton. There is so much to love about this game: from the presentation (grew up with GB/GBA) to the simple but engaging gameplay loop. I can see myself binging this on my handheld. The dodging mechanics are also super cool, I managed to beat the first big level and it was super engaging. The only thing that threw me off a little big was the whistles in the soundtrack because it felt like a timer had gone out.
Awesome gameplay! It took a little getting used to but I loved all the different levels and the fish were brutal!
Genuinely awesome gameplay. I did not expect it to get so intense! Nice job :)
Wow, I was not expecting a game this good. No idea if there is going to be a next week but I'd love to play it. The music is great, the visuals are incredible, specially the menus and the way it really looks like you're playing on an old GBA. Great game!
Amazing! I really enjoyed the gameplay and the simplicity of everything. This definitely felt like a game that would be on the older DS and Gameboys. Great stuff!
So fun! Awesome idea that I haven't seen anything like before, fits the theme great, and has great art!
I'm so curious what you would describe as the inspiration for this game! It seems like such a unique concept to me!
It was really shorty, but I really enjoyed it. I found it pretty easy once once I got the hang of the mechanic, but I totally see how you could make longer levels with more stages and enemies that have even more complex attack patterns and turn this idea into a full game. And I REALLY REALLY hope you do!
Great job guys!
Thanks! Our design philosophy from the start was "we want a very limited set of controls". We still wanted some species of two-dimensional movement, so we first thought about rotating a horizontal line into a vertical position. Then the issue became deciding which control goes up/down when the line is vertical. The solution: rotate everything by 45 degrees! As a fan of deltrarune, the rest was history XD
Oh, I just played the game, it was fun. The controls were a bit confusing at first, especially when I went into the settings, which was a pain. The difficulty ramped up nicely (though the rockets as the first attack are pretty intense, hahaha). It had a strong undertale vibe. Thanks for making this game!
Thank you!! And about those settings! We wanted to keep the three-button control scheme, and we ended up ditching the normal sliders because godot's slider nodes were being inexplicably finicky. That's why mouse doesn't work with the sliders. They were custom made to support the three button scheme, and we didn't bother to make it mouse compatible. Out of curiosity, was non-mouse compatibility what you found painful about the settings navigation, or was there something else too?
That game is really creative and fun with so many levels and different types of enemies. Great work!
I didn’t quite get what the point of the characters part was. It felt quite disconnected from the actual game.
The idea was that the little handheld game was "the game" around that time, so everyone was playing it. We thought about drawing sprites for the characters with them holding the consoles, but decided it was lower priority. It would definitely have communicated our vision for the whole lore of the game better though!
Definitely the game most likely to win this jam and for a very good reason! Looks very pretty, the characters have their own charm (specially Pixel) and the gameplay is amazing. Although I have little experience with bullet hells, this game reminded me of Undertale with the limit area to dodge and levels being based on the characters. I personally love that you can choose between moving out of the way or dodging, it's a very little thing that already opens room for player expression!
Hoping Bumper's dialogue is implying we'll get more levels...heh...
Great game and very satisfying!
This is incredible. The retro game seems simple at first but gets really complicated and addicting! Well done.
the best in this jam damn nice graphics and control
This is my favorite game so far. The amount of nostalgia, the minigames, the funny dialogs. This has the potential to become a big project even. Good job.
Goddamn. Of all the games I've played so far, I think this one deserves to win the most. Not only does it manage to evoke Nintendo-esque nostalgia (music plus gameboy plus all the "Pokemon trainers" whose levels you have to beat), it's also like... the Dark Souls of Nintendo games with its central mechanical idea. The credits rolled way too early on this one, especially with all the little character seeds you planted throughout.
A real fuckin gem. Congratulations on the excellent work.
The most original game I’ve played so far, and probably the most fun. Really, really, really good! Would love to see more of it!
This is really good. The gameplay is fun and understandable, but there is a lot of variation. The difficulty seems balanced too. I don't have the best reactions, but I could do it. The 3D and 2D mix looks awesome. Really nice entry!
Really liked the core mechanic, reminds me of the different soul modes in undertale and deltarune. I would love to see more levels where the mechanic is explored more.
I loved the combination of pixel art and low poly and the gameplay was fun as well.
