Theme Interpretation
I looked for inspiration in both Pong and Frogger, my favorite retro games. I tried to limit myself both to avoid bloating the scope and to match the theme, so I decided to go with a very simple control scheme, since retro games usually had limited input options anyways. That led to deciding I'd use mostly if not mainly the mouse for the controls, which brought my game idea closer to Pong. Then, as I began thinking about how to take something from Frogger, I thought "what if instead of a ball, you're catching a toad?", which led to "what if instead of Pong's paddle, you control a lily PAD?". That was the point where I committed to this idea.

Pong frogger… one could call it… pogger… Fun and good! Art and audio very nice too. I like it :-)

  • Really nice pixel art. I love the waves that go out from the lily pad and frog splash particles!
  • I wish could move the lily when the frog is high up
  • Music is pretty quiet
  • Different frog bounce sound effects, nice (slash same effect at different pitch maybe?)
  • This has to be one dizzy frog
Well done game, and congrats on finishing your first! Thankfully no ultra mega bugs to report from me.

This is a fun idea! I tended to play by holding down my mouse button constantly to move the pad around, but when the camera shifted upwards and then back down, it seems like I lose my "grab" on the lilypad and have to release the mouse button and click again to regain control, which was a little frustrating.

short, fun, simple and satisfying game. I love the way the frog bounces around and the minimal sound and art direction

Feels surprisingly good! I could definitely spend a lot of time playing this one lol. I also love the art style.

A little too late, but I just realized that what everyone was talking about regarding the lily pad controls is a bug that, for some reason, only happens in the HTML version? I haven't had it happen in Godot, and when I tested the HTML5 page, I hadn't had it happen because I usually keep the camera down on the pond.

I'll see if I can get it fixed when the voting period is over! Sorry for misunderstanding it so many times, whoops

My high was 79 :) the trick for me was to just hold down the space bar the whole time and just let go for a split second when I had enough time. It reminded me of trying to learn how to drive stick hahaha it's a very fun game and the audio and effects are pretty perfect. Awesome job!

I was a little lost on how to move the lily pad, but once i figure it out, it was really fun to play!
Really polished game, very good! congrats on first jam entry!

I agree with the others regarding the lily pad controls. The sounds are quite nice, and overall it's a very enjoyable game!

Nicely polished for the scope. The lily pad and water interact in a very satisfying way. However, I only got a personal best of 32 because I lose control of the lily pad when the camera pans up, meaning I have to click on the lily pad when the camera pans back down to move it again, wasting precious time. If you fix that one issue after the voting period, I bet I could get 100!

Developer(+1)

Thank you very much! That is the one feedback I got from everyone that played the game, actually, it's a genuine surprise to me! It was an intentional choice to lose control over the lily pad, as otherwise you could just keep your cursor on the toad when the camera is following it to always have the lily pad below it, which is why I made it so holding spacebar pans the camera back down to the pond so you can put the lily pad where you think the toad is going to land before it even starts falling.

This common feedback made me realize just how important it is to let other people playtest your game, since it was something that made the game more fun to me, but it's definitely not fun for anyone else it seems! lol
I'll fix that as soon as the voting period is over. Thank you for the comment and feedback!

This is a very solid project! There's a lot of great stuff here. Most importantly, it's fun.

Congrats on your first jam! Did it surprise you to see the final product? I have a bad habit of never finishing projects, and letting perfection get in the way of progress, so my first jam was a real eye opener in that regard. I can tell by the level of polish on this game that you've got what it takes to create great stuff!

Developer

Oh It definitely surprised me! I also struggle with never finishing projects, but mostly because I bite more than I chew and end up designing games that I'm just not capable of making yet. Even when I sit down and try to design a "small achievable game", it ends up being out of my reach.

What surprised me the most about the game jam was that I managed to design something small and fun in such a short time, and managed to get it to a playable state within a couple days, something that hadn't happened before. I feel like the jam opened my eyes and finally let me see the value in ACTUAL small games — I even got another small game idea right after finishing POND PONG, and I think it's  achievable!

Anyways, thank you for the sweet comment and I'm glad you had fun!

Awww such a cute and fun game! The art and sound effects are gorgeous, I love how silly the frog looks like while it spins! My max is at 103 I wonder how high the background goes. Congrats on your first game jam, doing it solo as well! Your game got juicy game juice!!

Submitted(+1)

Great game! Simple but still fun. As others mentioned, the ripple effect is great, quite satisfying. My only complaint is that the camera movement makes the game start to get confusing.

Submitted(+1)

Cool twist on the classic game! Really great looking art and the UI is so clean. The ripples look so good too! I assume they’re just sprites that move away from the bounce point but they sell the illusion very well. Congrats on completing your first jam :D

Developer

Assumed right! The ripples are just two particles being instantiated on the lily pad sprite position, I was very surprised that it looked as good as it did, I expect it to look very ehhh. Thank you for the comment!
