Holy moly what an underrated gem! The premise is very cool, and I do think solving the frustration with voice commands boils down to finding a more responsive and accurate voice recognition plug-in / library, which can be difficult so I won't judge it too harshly.

Allowing us to input commands via text alone was already enough, but I'd also like to acknowledge you guys for making it so that certain misheard phrases are still treated as their closest valid command! For example, the game recognized "hoist sales" as "hoist sails" and I can't help but imagine you guys saying all the available commands in the game to the voice recognition and listing out all the common ways it could mishear them to give the players some leeway! Mega props to that, I appreciate game design gestures like that very, very much.

As others have said, the game is a bit slow-paced, but I love the gimmick very much so I will sort of overlook it. The art is wonderful, and I love the little game-feel animations like your crew members spinning after performing a task. I also love little things like that. Overall, a lot of potential here!

Thank you so much for the kind words, the feedback, and for playing the game! Really glad you enjoyed (at the very least) aspects of it. :D

As for the voice controls — Yeeee. Very much yee.
If I recall during development, multiple different libraries were actually used and tried (to varying results). Some did nothing. Others crashed builds. Others wouldn't even build. Fun times! Regardless of the library, we actually would have loved to add even more "close enough" words or phrases into the game in hindsight. It's amazing just how differently people will phrase commands. owo;

Thanks again for playing! ^w^

Okay it's slow but wooow it's really cool, even if voice didn't work for me (I'd probably pronounce terribly either way) it was very cool feel like a captain giving orders, you need to be quick with your decisions and all, and the characters the events, objective etc works great. Truly impressive work for 10 days! I got wrecked by the enemies after my 4th Kobold lol but I'd probably give it another try, it was fun!

Hello! Gorgeous presentation. Love all the art and the jolly music. I'm please you went to the extra effort of having a lovely start screen too.

The voice detection is working amazing for me. I am speaking lil a cartoon pirate and shouting orders and it works GREAT. However there isn't a lingo manual in the pause menu.......ok wait now there is. It just didn't show up for the first few minutes. There's a lot here. Having the lingo manual just under the replay tutorial button is a bit dangerous.

I would say having  text confirmations would be great. Instead of "aye sir" an "aye sir, loading cannons" would let you know that the command had been properly received.

So I managed to raise anchor, set sail sail, lower anchor and pick up Swiff at the first port. This is all pretty cool stuff! The lingo manual promises a lot of stuff like combat and extra crew - is there more stuff to discover or have I done everything there is to do? Either way this was a treat!

Thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the game so much and that the voice controls worked so well for you! (They can be reeeaaallly hit or miss we've found. owo;). Beyond what you've seen, there isn't too much more beyond sailing the high seas, gathering crew members (there are four that can be found in total), and duking it out to sink other ships for more gold! We would have loved to have more (our list of stretch goals was biiiiiig), but alas — game jams, amiright? :3c

Thank you so much for the thoughts and feedback and for playing the game! :DDD

ooooh so there is more combat and more characters! Rad! I do kinda wish there was a map of some kind cos sometimes its feels like the world is empty but maybe I'll set sail again and try to find someone and pick a fight!

Developer

Yes yes! — and fair. ;3
I'll tell you a little implementation secret... from a technical standpoint, your ship never actually moves! Instead, the whole world rotates like a ball and your ship lives on top of it. Does that matter to you as a player? Nope! Is it silly? Yes. Definitely. Is it related to anything you said? Not really. Rawr. :3333

Oh cool! I think Outer Wilds did something similar if i am remembering correctly.

Do you have a playthrough video of someone playing this game? it's fascinatingly put together and extremely ambitious, an i'd love to see what's going on!

The game seemed to have a terrible time understanding my accent . "Raise the anchor" took about 20 tries, ("Rez Bianca", "where's the anchor", "where's the answer?") Hoist the sails took another 20 more haha.  ("Host the cells!" "Hot Easter sales!"), which in itself was kinda amusing!

Great work on something really unique, this is really original!

Developer(+2)

I don’t think there are any full playthrough videos but you can always type commands directly for more precision. Accents can definitely be a vector for frustration, and unfortunately there’s nothing we can do to adjust that (we used a premade voice interpretation library). But, my roommate played our game and he has a thick Texan accent, and he had a similar experience to you – he was frustrated, but simultaneously amused. Thank you for playing our game and offering kind words!

Overall interesting game, the gameplay is neat, but can be a bit frustrating if you type slow. but I really like the idea of captaining a ship by commanding your crew~

I had a problem with all versions of the game where it became unplayabley laggy after 10-20 minutes, forcing me to restart or try another version (linux version was unplayable from the get-go)

browser version worked best, but still became unplayable.

Waiting for the crew to pick up gold was an unbearable wait time, and led to me crashing into a town and sinking because none of my crew would respond to commands.

It could for sure benefit from multiple songs for sailing the high seas, the music was great, but became repetitive after a time.

Developer(+1)

I’m not sure what may be causing your game to lag. It’s been tested on Linux, Windows, and web, and you’re the first to experience any slowdown. (I don’t think there’s much we can do about it, but…) Thank you for playing our game and giving us constructive criticism!

The game feels very slow with following orders so you need to type veeery early. Sadly, voice commands didn't worked for me at all (maybe because of windows voice recognition)

my honest reaction of to the game:

the idea is  amazing

the art  is so fitting together

the gameplay is different from any game I've played before

to be honest the music was cool but after a while it becomes annoying :3
but overall  you made a wonderful game , grate work   ^v^

Thank you so much for the kind words. qwq7

When we were considering our ideas, a lot of our designs tried to lean as heavy into the theme (from a game-mechanic standpoint, not necessarily an aesthetic standpoint) as we could. In the end, voice controls and whacky captaining was what we decided to go with! While we certainly wish the end result was more ergonomic, we were still happy to have something completed.

Thank you so much for playing! :DDDD

Awesome!!! Thank you so much a-for-to playing our game!

I like the idea of this game, but I think some things need to resolve faster, or at least there should be some kind of fast-forward/turbo option.

I do love the aesthetic though! Good stuff! :3

Thanks for the feedback and for playing our game! Glad you liked the piratey presentation! :DDD

Cool idea, and decently fun! The voice detection does need some work though XD

Totally fair! x3
Voice controls were the primary inspiration for the project. They ended up being a bit clunkier than one would have hoped... but I'm personally thrilled we had a chance to try such a thing at all. Thanks for playing! :D

Love the characters and the concept. I like the multitasking idea, but I feel like it needs a few more commands to really take advantage of it fully.
