Amazing visuals and mood for for the game. You really nailed it!

The controls and combat feel a bit sluggish. I was just avoiding the big monsters the whole time since there’s no way to trade health with them efficiently. Maybe you could use the light mechanic to have some effect on it that allows that encounter to be skill based?

Developer

Thank you very much !
We did feel that as well and we're planning to add a shield and/or parry mechanic but it was too late in the jam to add. It will come to the game with the next update.
I hope you were still able to defeat the big monsters mandatory to get to the boss ?

The maze would have been more enjoyable if I had some kind of sprint or some kind of mechanic that allowed me to speed up either for travel or even dodge the beast's attacks. In any case, the game is beautiful, nice entry!

Developer

Thank you !
Sprint will be coming with the next update

I agree with Nisovin - this game definitely feels slow. I think the default movement speed for both the player and enemies could just be increased without adding sprinting. I also think it would be better to let the player attack, move, and shine the light simultaneously rather than being forced to stop other actions when starting one of them.

That said, this is a great little game! Nice artwork, atmospheric level design and an actual story, which is rare. Excellent work overall.

Developer

We do plan on adding a sprint with the next update, but probably not increasing base movement. Letting the player attack and mouve simultaneously could be nice as well, but we do not agree on shining the light and attacking at the same time - that would make the game too easy and erase all need for planning how to approach enemies.

And thank you !

Fair enough! My experience was just that the gameplay overall felt too slow and constrained, and I don't think allowing the light and attack abilities to be used simultaneously would erase all need for planning how to approach enemies - you'd still need to be smart about where you're aiming and what you're hitting with the attack. I don't think being limited to one at a time adds much to the challenge, but I may be in the minority and I can totally understand the concern about making it too easy.

I think the bottom line for me is that I'd love to see more of the challenge come from timing and reaction and less from constraining the player - i.e. lean more towards skill based gameplay like sirdorius said. I think a potentially fun combination would be a faster base movement speed with a speed penalty while you're using the light.

Regardless of my personal take on all of that, I know you did what you were able to in the time you had and I would love to give it another go after the voting if you update it :)

This game is really nice. It has some great atmosphere. I love the spooky eyes just floating around. I did feel a bit slow, especially moving through areas I'd already been. And the lack of any defensive options made it feel bad, like I was just forced to take damage all the time.

Developer(+1)

Thanks a lot !

And yes, this is completely fair criticism
We are definitely planning to add parry to the game after the jam. We noticed that it was really lacking a day before it ended but we prioritized polishing what we already have, correcting bugs and finishing the boss battle
We will be adding sprint as well

I really love the mood and atmosphere. Your art is amazing!

Want to know more about the story =)

Congratulations on your submission!

Thank you very much !

The story is quite simple, really : a boy with a pretty fertile imagination is afraid of the dark, so he imagines his night light as a light fairy, a guardian keeping darkness at bay
But one night his night light runs out of batteries, and he tries to fight his fears by using his imagination once again, picturing a fight against darkness in a fairytale-like world that is his depiction of darkness' realm - which results in him growing out of his fear of the dark once he defeats darkness
I think the story we tell ourselves as children are magic in themselves, and I wanted to pay a tribute to that.

Nice work! I like the art, music, and font choice! The opening story part felt really clean and polished; I liked the subtle static in the background. A sprint option would be a nice addition. Well done!

Thank you very much !

We did think about a sprint button at some point and then... forgot about it...
It will be added to the next update I think
