The central mechanic of upgrades being linked was pretty cool, but not very well communicated. The twist with the final character's "sacrifices" was VERY cool, and genuinely felt a little brutal. It would be nice to have a little more automation, or at least a way to buy more than 1 upgrade at a time, but I could see that being a deliberate design decision to make the player more willing to give up control of the characters to Atraia.
(the rest of this is a plural person rambling about their interpretation of this game's story)
I think the implication of this game is that it's a view of a plural system (probably one undergoing final fusion) through the lens of an incremental game; each character is linked in subtle ways, and it becomes increasingly complex to try to manage every different thing for every person. Some of them have entirely different styles, but it's still fundamentally the same thing -- and there's always that little hint, that idea in the back of your head that it would be so much easier if there were just less to think about. That if these people are so similar, and already sort of connected, isn't it better to just have one less person to manage?
All you'd need to do is.. have that person give up their originality, their individuality. And every time someone gives up, every time someone stops being whatever they were and becomes something more like a normal person, there's a little less strain on everyone else; it gets a little bit easier for them to carry on... and a little more tempting to stop being the narrow-minded things that they are, and be something more... normal, I guess.
Gah. It's technically recovery, but it's still tragic in a way, and I think that's depicted really well here, even if that wasn't originally the intention!
it is so beautiful and special that this game has been interpreted like this by you and others. thank you for playing
This is nice, I really enjoyed the unique mechanic of the linking upgrades and how each character gained resources a bit differently. It took me a while to understand Faun, but it wasn't a major blocker. Balancing-wise, I think the lead up to Faun was great, but it lagged there quite a bit and I started to wonder if I'd simply reached the end until the final character eventually showed. Maybe some kind of clear goal or at least a hint that there's something more would've been nice? Anyway, it was neat and I enjoyed it, great job!
The art was nice, the little bits of humor (such as being an orange in another universe) were nice. The gameplay itself was good and I enjoyed that there were unique mechanics for each different person, I particularly thought that Faun's was cool. That said, there wasn't much of a story or anything but it kinda seemed intentionally surreal in that way as far as I could tell (and what do I know)
Admittedly I didn't realize that all of them required different numbers for automation... I got Faun up to e80 before I happened to check the tab and see I only needed e35 lol, oops. Also some way to change between them other than clicking the labels would be nice, so I could continue systematically swapping between each & buying upgrades without moving my mouse too much
Some kind of SFX or music would be good, definitely seems like the kind of game that would benefit a lot from cool music given that the art clearly had a lot of care put into it too
music was definitely in mind but i started half way through the time so i didnt have the time unfortunately. someone else mentioned keybinds and i definitely want to add that after the jam too, maybe the number keys and/or arrow keys. thank you for playing!!
I finished it!
It would have been nice to have a little lore or some story to set up the goal. I wasn't really sure what the game was about or the point of it. But the characters getting unlocked and the upgrading seemed pretty well balanced, because it kept my attention to the end.
Another thing you could add to enhance it besides story is some sound effects or music.
I like the visuals but I got lost with the orange XD
