This is great! I love the idea. Unfortunately I don't have the patience to get to the end. I tried to map the area carefully and I did pretty well on some part, but later the thing started chasing me and I got completely lost.

I think a nice addition that would make this a little more managable is to have the player start with a map that is partially filled in or have them be able to tell at any point which directions they can go. For example make the ui communicate in some way: There is a wall to the left, There is a something to the right, You can go forward or backward. I don't know if theese are good ideas, but they are just some I came up with.

Maybe I will try again in some time, because I really liked the premise. Great entry!

Great idea. Very tense. But I feel if you want to take it further it needs a bit more feedback to the player. Perhaps even just an impression of what kind of wall you are touching perhaps?

Great sound though. Really gives you an immersive feeling of being in the dark. Suddenly finding your footsteps are wet sploshes was cool.

i really like the idea of this one but im pretty bad at it, i lose my position very very quickly and it feels impossible to get it back

i think the addition of more landmarks or small descriptions of stuff would help a lot("this wall is wet" or "the floor here is sticky")

i like the monster and the steps counter but it felt kinda easy to just run around blindly and get some distance from it

Absolutely brilliant concept, but I think it needs more development. By this I mean please do develop it as it's excellent and I'm intrigued to see how it progresses!

Great jam entry :)

great game overall, didn’t expect a pitch black game to be so engaging. I got completely lost when IT starts getting near and I pressed random buttons lol.

also I feel like mouse drawing map isn’t the most helpful to the player, maybe a pixel art like grid would be better for control

The concept is pretty cool but also very tedious to explore with, I think free drawing is not the idea way for tracking map and I'm cooked by the maze size, gonna put this down for a while and I'll use spreadsheet for a 2nd run later... /ᐠ –ꞈ –ᐟ\

(So you see if we start the map at the wrong cell the space runs out at the leftmost...)

Very creative! love the map feature. Nice job!

Really enjoyed playing this! I struggled with knowing where I started on the map and then with the audio sometimes not playing causing me to not know whether or not I actually moved forward.
When the "15 steps away" appeared I started to immedietly get stressed and felt like I was physically fumbling through a dark maze.
Really fun concept!!

I absolutely love the concept. True blindness is kind of an unexplored (because you can't see haha get it) mechanic in horror games, and probably understandably so because it's incredibly difficult to design around and it kind of shows here.

The current design might rely too much on its noting and map drawing mechanics, severely slowing down the gameplay which can hurt a showcase that might be otherwise expected to be quick and to the point, but I love them as actual mechanics and might be just fine outside of a jam environment. Perhaps it could have been useful to be able to get full feedback of your immediate surroundings, like whether there are any walls on your left or right since realistically you should be able to move around while hugging a wall, but I'm not sure how I'd personally design it. It's a game design that's literally stumbling in the dark, but I love it and really want it to work someway.

Thank you for bringing this really cool idea to life and making an attempt at designing something that frankly might be near impossible to get right under jam restrictions.

Really creative concept, The sound design is obviously great and the its 15 steps away message is terrifying. But a little confusing for I barely managed to cheese through the level

Hello! Wow, I wasn't expecting a game about pitch black to be this interesting. It's genius how the idea doesn't require graphics or complex gameplay, perfect for a game jam. I believe the charm is in discovering parts of the map one small piece at a time with the threat of a monster.

The only downside is that the in-game notes are far from enough to map the whole place comfortably. Nothing that can't be solved by a simple spreadsheet, but having it in-game would've been very convenient. (though in 4 days I believe it would take too much of the time)

Here's the vod, game at 2:32:00 (I'll merge it in a single video in some weeks).

Very interesting idea and creepy enviroment, it kept me always alert. Great submission, congrats!

Easy 5 stars for creativity. I always love games like this that really bend the rules. It's super cool that I can draw stuff out in-game. I still need to go back and finish. Maybe I'll use graph paper IRL now that I won't be streaming Lol.

Wowww really creepy and very creative interpretation! I got so scared of the monster I could play this for so long!

Submitted(+1)

So cool! One issue is that the map had some tiles that were just looong.

WOW this is my favorite game of the jam so far. Such a cool idea and execution is so good. You turned no art into an advantage, what a crazy idea!

I wanted to do something horror too but thought that I couldnt since horror would require the narrative, gameplay, art and music all pulling strings to work properly, but you did just that. Amazing work.

Thank you! Yeah no visuals was definitely a unique challenge and it's so much different from what I'm used to. Glad you liked it, thank you for playing!

Super cool! Definitely felt the tension and stress as IT approached, plus the audio really amplified the vibes! The main issue was that if I ever ran from the monster or accidentally hit a couple buttons I wasn't meaning to, I would get completely lost and it would take me ages to reorient myself with my map. But it was fun to find things around the environment and learn the story!

Very cool idea, I like that dying does not reset the map progress. The "It is ..." text added a lot of suspense to the play, especially as it would change colors the closer It got. Audio was good and the different sliders added in helped to dial it in for me.

Two things I struggled with was the want to just leave the map open, so text on the screen kept getting cut off, and struggling with marking where I wanted to on the map. It felt like the map squares were a little too small to mark the map and items I found in it the way I wanted to

Developer

Thank you for the critique! Thanks for playing!
