Only played as the stabby guy but it was a lot of fun! I was kinda worried after I beat a level if I'd have to go back to it and "optimize" it to do everything in the least amount of steps but I managed to barely get through without perfecting things too much. A very enjoyable concept! I could 100% see this working well in an expanded game. Great level design and gameplay, good work.
I really like the idea, but I think it’s a bit of a shame that each character is only used as a difficulty level although the robot did make me laugh.
I don’t know why, but the game really reminds me of Void Stranger probably because of the black-and-white style, the panels, and the descent down a tower.
thank you for the comment and trying out our game!!
every character actually does have a different emphasis on how you approach levels, but it can be difficult to see right away! its mostly noticeable if you chase for the highest scores for each individual character
Stab Happy is definitely intended to be the most straightforward and easy character, but Gun Mage has the ability to jump while having the same cost to traveling by walking, allowing you to avoid losing steps outright to obstacles and playing around with the cycles enemies will be at for attacks, which allows you to gain the most steps once you defeat them. this paired with only a ranged attack, you have to be witty with your moves to get the highest score!
Adept Adventurer has the most complicated routes to the highest scores since they have the most amount of abilities. they might appear like Stab Happy with a just a few more abilities, but those abilities change how you approach the puzzles, and they are the only one with a "wait" ability. now you have to weigh all of your options and find out what order of operations will lead you to the most optimal route, which can be a bit of a challenge since there are so many valid paths
and Delivery Bot doesn't need explanation, of course, turning the games mechanics on its head!
because of these differences, i actually did not know which character would be considered the easiest. for simply clearing the game, my guess was it could be Adept Adventurer since they have the most options, but they do start with the least amount of steps!
in any case, thank you again for trying our little jam game out!!
Very cool game that really utilises the jam theme! I definitely suck at puzzles, but I thought the characters and their different abilities were very cool! Delivery bot is best character >:)
Thank you so much! Delivery bot has been the crowd favourite for sure :D
This game is sick! I played through all 4 characters' levels and had a blast! I love how the different characters' moves changes the way how you approach the same stage layouts. Fantastic work!
Thank you so much! We’re so happy you enjoyed our game and stuck with it for so long!!
Well done game! It was fun to think about ways to optimise your movements in order to complete the game. The art style is simple but works really well. Great job!
Thanks a lot! I’m super glad the optimisation ended up quite fun!
I absolutely love this game. Did you build a level editor or did you build the levels by hand ?
This kind of game where you can backtrack and make better scores to help you for future levels really works when implemented like this. I really think you nailed both the macro (advancing through levels) and micro (advancing in a single level) with a very good link between both.
You perfectly respected the jam theme. The artwork is cute and sober (which I really like). The amount of levels you can build with the mechanics you created is nearly infinite.
Really, GGs. Probably my favorite game so far.
PS : and there are multiple characters with different powers!!! How good is that???
It means so much to see the parts of our design where we also felt the most hopeful about appreciated this way. I totally agree about the art, eelbird is super skilled at pumping out these adorable sprites, and I honestly wish we could add even more. The reality is that the puzzle components came together quite late, and we did not want to spend too much effort on making assets we wouldn’t know we would be using!
And about the level editor - we tried to leverage Godot’s TileMapLayer system and essentially made it possible to provide levels as singular Scenes that would be swapped in and out our gameplay prototype Scene according to the metaprogression logic. This let us iterate on these fast well without having to mess with the code once it was written!
Thank you so much for checking out our game!
The idea of having different levels that you can replay and optimize is really fun, and it creates an engaging loop that pushes you to replay levels to progress in the next ones. I finished the game with 18 steps, but I'm sure I can still do better. I played with the mage, but it could be fun to try it out with the other characters.
Thanks, it was great, well done to the team!
This actually brings up our internal discussion about which characters to actually expose first, and in which order they should be displayed so players that only play our game once would get a decent grasp on the experience! The characters have a different set of abilities and their parameters (cost, mostly), so the solutions end up quite different, but clearing is a pretty good achievement!
Thank you so much for playing our game!
I'm a bit curious now to see the gameplay variations and different solutions with the different characters so I think I'll probably revisit the game after the jam to check out the other heroes!
I must admit I only picked the mage because I like this class in JRPG generally and Gun Mage's design appealed to me more than the others, but the order did pushed me a bit more towards the Stab Happy so I almost picked it.
This was a lot of fun, trying to optimize the steps makes for a pretty neat puzzle. I ended up finishing with the same amount of steps I started with using the adventurer which was pretty neat. Would definitely benefit from an undo button though lol
Thank you for checking out our game!
Glad you enjoyed the metaprogression layer! We felt like it would end up a major replayability factor given our previous jam experiences, and I’m glad it worked out!
I love the game! The art is great! I really enjoy the puzzle!
Thank you so much! I definitely agree about the art, my friend did fantastic work!
I really enjoyed this game! At first, some of the skill effects and tile interactions were a little hard to understand, but once everything clicked, I had a lot of fun finding the best routes for each character and improving my score. Well done!
Thanks a ton! I’m super glad you managed to figure things out! We definitely had a lot of fun playtesting, but there’s also an obvious bias coming from already knowing what’s possible.
I really like the way this game controls; it's very smooth.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it!
Cool true-roguelike puzzle game, the replay value with the different characters is great
Thank you so much for checking out our game!
Very cute and charming game! The abilities were intuitive after i actually looked at them lol, and the rogue aspect is fun!
Thank you so much! I personally really wanted to leave even more ways for players to discover skills and mechanics, but player onboarding just too important for this kind of a game. Happy you managed to piece things together though :D
a charming game similar to helltaker but with some sort of "rogue" twist, the art is soooo cute i love it! I had some trouble understanding everything, especially when taking damage, how to deal damage, how many steps you earned, etc etc. But with some polish, this game would kill! awsome work
Thank you so much for playing our game!
We definitely agree that better onboarding could make things easier to get going, but sadly the remaining development time was a huge factor in that department. Super happy you enjoyed it though!
