Thank you all for playing~ I have updated the game to fix some of the bugs and speed up undo system.

Should be able beat the game with all 66 gems in tact.

Very clever, finally managed to beat it with 2 gems remaining! Curious to know what's the most efficient path and how many gems you can keep in the end. As some other people already pointed out a faster undo would be really handy and I would also like to point out that I found some secret walls that are probably unintentional(Room 0: to the right of the door; Room 3: in the two bottom corridors; Room 7: in the rightmost wall).

Developer

Thanks for playing~ i managed to beat it with 16 gems remaining. but with faster undo (and the fast travel trick) i can do 43 - ah yes, some of the secret walls are unintentional - i couldve changed the tile to a different color to test it beforehand (the intentional ones are: room 0 right door was intentional as that get you to the "black" key, one connecting between room 0 (left) to room 2 and one on room 4 to get to the black tile)

Very interesting take on the theme. The main mechanic is quite clever but deserves a bit more explanation in game. It would be nice if I can also control with WASD then I will be able to comfortably control with one hand. But very enjoyable game that reminds me of a little DOS game called Tower of the Sorcerer which I also really liked. Finding the correct pathway and order to preserve your resource is pretty fun. Although can be quite unforgiving too given the nature of the open-world.

Developer

thanks for playing, i decided to go with the minimal explanation and let the player figure it out. Oooo funny u said that, i have played games where they only had WASD but not the arrow keys, and found them annoying too (noted for future games to include wasd control) - ah yes, the correct pathway is hard - maybe an earlier cutscene showing the 4 doors map could helped, or remove the secret path on the map with the blue key, letting the player decide when to use the key might help too (i should have swapped the blue door with either red/green door (to mitigate the requirement to restart if wasted the blue key), and maybe add a few more gems along the way

Creative and well executed game loved the artwork and the sfx, i loved the GUI for this game and the mechanics felt polished however i would like that undo button would be faster without a delay but anyways great game!

Developer(+1)

thanks for playing~ yes, i will speed up the undo slightly~, went with the longer timer to prevent crashes (in hindsight 0.3sec might be too long) and forgot to add the option to hold it to keep undo-ing

It was a little frustrating to keep having to reset back to the beginning. An undo button would have really helped. Loved it though! Hope the feed back helps. Great work!

Developer

did the undo button not work? i got feedback from some ppl that pressing z doesnt work~ what computer do you use?

Submitted(+1)

You know what, I didn't even know there was an undo button. It only says it on the title screen and I completely missed that. I didn't see it during gameplay like the spacebar hint. I'll have to give it another play!

Developer

oh man, i just assumed people would try z as undo~ yea, will put that on the gameplay screen too

Genuinely amazing game, I had to retry a couple times but I managed to get both the endings, the moment I realised there were secret paths was the moment everything clicked for me.

Developer(+1)

glad you enjoyed it, i couldnt decide if i should gate the keys in that last map or not. some would just give up there, and others will retry to see if secret paths can solve it (i am still waiting for someone to spot the quick travel trick tho)

Submitted

idk if this was what you were talking about, but i was able to take a secret path to (i think) room 8, then use quick travel to the same room to bypass all the doors

Developer(+1)

thats the one ;)

Fun puzzles! Good use of the theme!

Developer

thanks for playing :)

It is a cool concept. It would have been better if the paths were not too divergent. I accidentally used some keys on the wrong door. With a little more polish, it could even be a commercial release. Great work!

Developer (1 edit)

thanks for playing~, yes i needed to swap the blue door with a different color~ and add a few more gems along the way to avoid softlocks

Submitted

6/10 because I only had 6 gems left… just kidding, absolutely a 10/10! 😄image.png

Developer(+1)

glad you enjoyed it~~~~

Ok this was really nice, tried it 2 but did not really figure out how to save the colored keys for the last room
but I hatd lots of fun

Developer (2 edits)

hint: it relies on spotting the hidden passages, also i shouldve swapped the blue door with red/green, so u dont have to get all the colored keys~~ but yes, thanks for playing

Pretty enjoyable game, I found the hidden pathways to be quite surprising, though it almost seemed as though some were unintentional? (There were a handful of rooms where you could exit the right side of the screen to get into the UI, which didn't really do anything of note apart from look odd) Apart from that, I wish that the Undo button was a bit faster to use consecutively, but it was still quite fun!

Developer

Thanks for playing. How far did you progress? i didnt playtest enough to find all the unintentional ones (tho if you go far enough, u might have broken the game). i did the slow undo because i didnt want the game to break that way and didnt have enough testing to speed it up (someone did suggest a time travel undo (that undo back to the previous map, which will be implemented)

I beat the game in full, first utilizing the black key and then again without using it. I think a time travel undo as you say would be a splendid solution!

Submitted(+1)

I enjoyed your game!! I finally get the box after multiple trials without the black key!!

It was fun puzzle game and I liked the smooth gameplay!

Developer(+1)

congrats on being the first person to complete the game. how did u end up doing it, very curious...

Submitted(+1)

I played it for almost an hour lol 🤣 It was fun!

Nice idea ! A bit difficult to understand though

Developer (1 edit)

thanks for trying, eitehr its not the genre for you, or maybe i need to flesh out the tutorial more

Cool concept! I feel like the rules could be explained a bit better, and there are some bugs (like being able to walk through a wall, and pressing Z did nothing for me), but it has the potential for a fun puzzle game!

Developer

walking through wall was intentional to allow for shortcuts (there is a subtle difference between the sprite colors)

i feel like trial and error is the best way to showcase the rules without explicitly explaining it

what computer you using? pressing z seems to work fine on mine.

(+1)

Ohh right, my bad! Seems I wasn't smart enough to figure it out :D
I played in browser on a windows PC, so no idea why Z wasn't working... still, it's a great game!

Developer

i probably shouldve chosen a better color contrast to make it more obvious, and change the character's contrast as they walk through the wall

wonder if you had capslock being on, maybe it was recognising capital Z, not lowercase z

Developer

also thanks for playing! :)

Nice core concept for a puzzle game, needing to think about using your resources in the most sensible way to carry more to the following room. There’s a solid atmosphere and mystery about the game and I enjoy learning how the mechanics work through experimentation rather than explanation. The undo button is also a welcome tool to correct misclicks.

The addition of out of bounds tricks was a cool moment, but after a while it started to just feel too floaty as a result. I got the black key ending, then restarted and played up to the grey key door followed by the blue door, but I only have a red key. I’m guessing there was a point earlier where I should have used the red key to retain the blue key for this moment, but I don’t really want to reset the game or tap undo 200+ times to try it, so I’ll call it there.

I think one approach to tighten up the gameplay would be to ensure rooms are independent. I’d suggest playing “Bean and Nothingness” for a good example of how to weave together independent rooms into a larger exploration & narrative. Your game has a somewhat similar energy so I think it might be a good inspiration for you.

Of course, this approach negates the meta-puzzle of needing to solve earlier puzzles in such a way that sets you up to solve later puzzles, but if that's important to you then an alternative solution would be to replace the fast travel with time travel, where the player can go back to change how they solved a previous puzzle to bring different resources into the future. It might not be possible to make that work without breaking things, but I just think asking the player to replay large sections in response to hitting a wall they couldn’t have predicted is too much to ask.

Developer(+1)

thanks for playing!

1) Ive always struggled with how to transition from a normal puzzle game, to meta puzzles (i mean, treasures are not meant to be easy to find) but you have given me a few ideas for the next game.

2) the undo could've been abit faster to help, but you are right, i could include the time travel back to the previous map (basically mass undo til the map changed)

3) the hug the wall trick would have worked better if there was a map that allowed u to guess where u could possibly enter (theres only a few of that sprinkled in)

PS. there is a hidden interaction ||between undo and fast travel that couldve been used to retain resources||

Nice! I think there's potential in this kind of trickery! Keep at it! ✊
