Really fun one, and tough for sure, I got properly stuck a few times :)
One thing that might be worth a look, the checkpoint seems tied to the room you’re standing in rather than the furthest room you got to. I wandered back into an earlier room, died there by accident, and it restarted me at that earlier room instead of where I’d worked my way up to. Losing ground I’d already cleared felt worse than the deaths themselves.
Music and visuals are on point, and it’s a great take on the theme, though I might be biased as another vampire game maker :)
Was the backtracking something you wanted players able to do, or did the rooms just end up open in both directions?
I've been trying to have a proper go through as many games as I can this jam, but I'm reaaaally bad at platformers ;-;
Of the few screens I did play through, I thought that both the idea, the art and the audio was perfect, though the dash being timed felt just that tad bit sluggish for me and difficult to intuit how to time jumping before dashes so that you have the right vertical position, though this is coming from someone with quite little experience in the genre. I really hope this does well, and I look forward to getting good enough to play this one fully through!
I liked the concept and the game as a whole. Though there's a couple of bugs and decisions that made it less enjoyable:
- If you're right up against a disappearing wall when you dash, it stops you even if it's supposed to be passable
- In one of the levels, I was falling through a purple platform on certain beats even though it looked solid
- The hanging blade in the second-to-last level that isn't tied to the beat only means you have to wait longer to get the right cycle. I think the regular spinning blades would have been better there
- The spinning blades that have a non-multiple-of-3 measure cycle also really increase the waiting time for the right cycle. In the last level, the horizontally moving blade has a 4-measure cycle so the level as a whole is on a 12-measure cycle
Thanks for such a in-depth review! the 4 cycle horizontally moving blade was intentionally designed so that the player should be back down when the saw is about to be at its lowest, so that you need to backtrack slightly to be able to continue. we will look over at our decisions that you have pointed out and tweak some things. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
Love the idea!! The pixel art is also beautiful. The first few levels felt like dancing a waltz :D
The dash mechanic seems to be designed to stay on beat, but sometimes it feels a little unresponsive because of that. I’m kind of stuck on the two beam level right now.
I loved the little Dracula guy's design and moving around as him, especially when he jumps and floats with his tiny cape. I also really liked he hovers when he walks, which is obviously a pretty minor thing, but it made me smile because most of the time in these game jam games if a character doesn't want I assume it's because they didn't have time to animate a walk cycle, but in this case it felt 100% appropriate.
I don't know if it's my computer, or a lack of rhythm, but I was never able to get a feel for the dash mechanic at all, despite really trying. I really wanted to keep playing since I loved walking and jumping as the little vampire, but after 10 or so tries on the second screen I called it quits. I had no problem keeping time when it was just jumping, but as soon as the dash became essential it just stopped being fun for me. As a player it really felt like it was delaying and firing randomly without giving me any control over the timing, even if it technically wasn't true. I read some of the explanations around the jump below and in the description, and while it seems to make sense on a technical level, on a game feel level if it had functioned like a normal dash (that activates the instant the button is pressed, like the jump) I don't think the timing would have been a problem for me at all.
I really liked the art and the general vibe - if the dash wasn't there or functioned more conventionally I think I definitely would have played until the end. Still liked what I little I saw!
The art and introduction is very cool, but the music loops wrong I think? Because after a while the platforms get very out of sync with the music. Otherwise it was very fun. I wish you could jump with w, but that’s just personal preference. Well done!
what you have observed could be the fading animation thing, the fade-in animation starts at the time its supposed to transition, so the platforms full color appears a very little while later. but we will look into that if a bug passed unnoticed or fix that illusion if its what I think THANK YOU FOR LOOKING IT OUT FOR US!
VOICEOVER IN A GMTK GAME!!!!!!!!! INSTANTLY SOLD!!!!!! and the art and the story oh man i can tell that ur probably a drac fan because this is a very fitting adaptation of him!!!!!!!!! so impressive and cool theres a lot of games that just have vampires this year and urs really feels like its earned it and not phoned in!!!
Absolutely beautiful game. The art and music alone is an experience. The puzzle platformer is great even if a little janky at times. Great Game.
The atmosphere and the music behind this game are amazing. I even liked the voice acting in the into. Great job :)
The music is really good, I do suck at rhythm games, but I still enjoyed trying it! Absolutely bonkers to do a Celeste-ish game in this short time <3
Especially love the music and the fact that you went for voiceovers!
Lovely little rhythm game! And an interesting take on the theme :3
Absolutely lovely history and voice acting. I struggled a lot with the puzzles, the art was great and you can see all the hard work you guys put to it :)
