I absolutely love this! Took me 347 years to beat it. I don't really have anything to criticise here. The idea is creative and very fun, loved that the demons can't heal so you keep playing as more parties, and I love that you made use of that to make powers such as Karma, the one that deals damage based on how many heroes were killed before. The narrative is fun, I love how you kept including references to the theme lmao. The artwork is really cool (the demon reminded me a bit of Undertale). THE MUSIC. I LOVE THE MUSIC I WANT TO REMIX IT. Only thing to point out, this is a game that could've really used some sound effects. But I still rated audio 4/5 because I just love the music so much. Great job!

PS: I find it amusing that you can attack yourself. Curiosity killed the Dwarf Cleric... I guess...

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it!

Undertale was definitely an inspiration for the demon sprite.

I wish I'd had time for sound effects, but you only get so much time in a jam. Just glad I had time to add music in, and that I picked a good selection.

If I'd had more time I might've added some abilities where there are reasons to attack yourself for some clever combos.

interesting idea with a lovely retro art style! Very big intimidating healthbar though! (perhaps a bit too large)
Well executed, however, great work.

Developer

Thanks for playing!

He's definitely an intimidatingly strong foe, but any smaller of a healthbar probably would've taken away from the point. I maybe could've balanced the heroes' abilities and random hero generation a little better though.

The game is a little long for my liking but the visuals, story, and music are great. It sucks when you've got multiple healers or no permanent debuffs but that's randomness for you.

Developer

Thanks for playing!

If I'd had more time I would've tried to balance it a little better so you can't end up stuck with a lot of weak parties, but thats how game jams go.

Submitted(+1)

That was such a cool concept! I really liked the idea of passing things down to the next generation of heroes throughout the game. I will never forget Zephyr's sacrifice for that last desperate life bomb attack!

Developer

Glad you liked it!

Interesting idea and I like how the enemy keeps the debuffs you granted in earlier runs, meaning it's easier for you to dish out damage the more runs you do, but I do have to say that it feels quite inconsistent with how many opportunities you have to lower his defence or damage, if you're unlucky like me you can have your whole party end up with 3 healers. But still, it's a good game and with some balancing this could be a pretty fun game!

Developer

Thanks for playing!

Yeah, ideally I probably should've made it so there can only be one of each class on the party so it's not quite as random whether you get the moves you need. I only had a bit of time for balancing unfortunately.

Such a great submission! I really like what you've ended up with, you took the theme and ran with it. One complaint I have is that I can't go back to reselect my spell after I choose it by accident, oh and maybe you could see how much damage you deal before doing the attack? Other than that, fantastic entry!

Developer (1 edit)

Thank you!

Im pretty sure it is possible to reselect spells! Escape or shift should do it.

I beat him! I love me some good old fashioned turned based boss battles - impressive you built a system for a game jam! It was interesting how I didn't know who I'd get every time and it would change my strategy, and how my focus was on weakening him when I could. I think you could add more feedback ('juice') - I'd love to see characters flash or shake when attacking or being attacked, animations, sound effects etc. Sometimes I didn't know exactly what was happening and it would help communicate that, and take an already strong idea up a level. Great job!

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! I wouldve liked to add more feedback if I'd had more time.

It took me 392 years but I was finally able to defeat Count Dronodan! This was a very fun game and I think the scope was really great for a game jam game. I can see it being expanded in many different ways and I had a lot of fun with it! Great job!

Glad you liked it!

Awesome idea for the game! It's one of the best takes on the theme that I have seen so far! If you would add some nice animations for the attacks and abilities as well as sound effects, then It would be amazing. Great game!

Developer(+2)

Thanks for playing! Sound effects and animations wouldve been nice but they were out of scope unfortunately.

the art is story is cool and the pun is funny, only problem i see with that is it gets really repetitve once on you get to the third cycle

Developer(+2)

Thanks for playing! I was hoping to add more variation between each party but I ran out of time for that.

Submitted(+2)

Woo, so much HP! I really enjoyed playing it. It did feel a bit repetitive at times, but I can definitely see the potential, adding more abilities and features could make it much less repetitive. Great job, guys!!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I was hoping to have more abilities but I ran out of time to implement most of them. I wanted to have a parry, some damage over time spells, some spells that came with cooldowns or countdowns in exchange for stronger effects, and abilities to slow down the Count's attacks, but I ended up not having much time to implement abilities so im just glad I was able to make the ones I had time for.

Fun things:

  • The lore and pun is absolutely marvelous. Thank you for once again contributing towards the running countdown jokes that I have seen in this year’s GMTK, it just is that funny to see that the count will count you down
  • The heroes that I’m given do get skills that allow me to hit the count better, and this felt really fun because I feel that the count can “weaken” with time
  • I get to see how many of my comrades died? And also those that defeated the count too???????
  • Music choice was nice

Things I find mildly annoying:

  • If a skill is called “Focus - Heal yourself” then shouldn’t you forgo the entire “character selection” thing and heal yourself? Why am I able to select heal other people but still heal myself?

Things that could be nice to have:

  • Make it possible to see how much damage you deal or heal on skill

Overall, pretty fun short game to play, I loved how you executed it. Looking forward to see you in a future jam!

Developer(+1)

Glad you liked it!

The focus thing is an oversight. I was in a rush while programming the abilities since it was near the end of the jam and forgot to make it so it skips the targeting part.

"In memory of the 16 heroes that gave their lives for a better tomorrow."

I had fun with the game. The randomized party members was a neat idea. Some sfx for the different attacks would make the game feel even better to play. Nice job in general though!

Developer(+1)

Thanks! I was hoping to add sound effects, but it was out of scope for the jam.

So many HP!!! Thankfully, Armor Break exists!

i liked the of the heros working together across generations, super cool!

Thanks!

oo this was one of my favorites. I love turn based games and this is a really cool way to set it up. Plus your artwork in the game is crazy good. Overall a super solid game!

Developer(+1)

Glad you liked it!

Loved the game. I loved seeing an enemy with such high stats. Reminds me of elden ring. It's very engaging and the attack powers are awesome. Kudos.

Developer(+1)

Thank you!

If no one's got my back, I know Armor Break does. Every time it showed up, I was like, "YESSSSSSS!"

I don't know if I'm biased saying this since I'm really into turn-based games, but this was SO MUCH FUN! I love the randomized heroes with different classes and abilities, and the portrait art is sooooo cute. Mage is my GOAT, though, as a lightning strike was the very last thing the Count saw before his very... timely... demise.

Seriously, stellar work! I'd definitely play this again to try getting a lower hero count now that I understand how every skill works.

This is only to satisfy my curiosity, but is there a maximum hero count, or could you theoretically stack, like, a bajillion heroes and one-shot the Count with Life Bomb (if you had WAY too much time on your hands LOL)?

Developer(+2)

I'm glad you enjoyed it!

I'm really glad I managed to get the randomized heros working, even if there's not as many possible variants as I'd like. If I'd had a lot more time, I would've also given them unique lines they can say based on their personality (an idea taken straight from the mode in corru.observer this was based on), but that was pretty far out of scope.

You can get infinite heros, so it's definitely possible to one-shot him if you wanted to! It'd probably take quite a long time though.

The game is really cute! Literally thought of the same phrase sometime in the middle of the jam haha ("TAKE DOWN THE COUNT"). Glad somebody did it! Why does he has so much hp though? T_T

Developer(+1)

Thanks for playing! If youre struggling to wear down his HP, the ability Armor Break is very useful because it lowers his defense. Theres a few other abilities that also help.

Submitted(+2)

lol i dont know if im just terrable at turnbased games but i found this game hard to play still was a fun time tho

Developer

Thanks for playing!

Its meant to be very hard at first and then get easier as you wear him down. Armor Break is very useful for that.

ohhh i see lol i was spamming dmg abilities the most xD
