Very cozy and I love the minimalist soundtrack, though audible fishing feedback would have helped some immersion. Stardew fishing muscle memory kicked in and I had to adjust but I enjoyed my time with it.
Gotta say, I'm a sucker for Stardew Valley fishing. When I played Stardew, I'd often find myself trying to guess the fish I'm catching while catching it, so I think this is a very good idea. I just wish it was easier to identify the fish in this game (I assume that was the intent, I'm not sure if I'm missing something). Overall, I had fun, and congratulations on finishing your first game!
It's a nice chill game! The fishing mechanic is pretty fun, and the upgrade system is cool. My main suggestion would just be to make it a bit less rng-heavy, one time in round 2 I lost all three of my strikes because two trouts never spawned, I only got one each attempt. Maybe it would help if the quota was money or rarity based rather than based on getting a specific fish that might help, or if there were some direct clear way to influence which fish might get caught. But overall great job!
Yeah I 100% agree with you. I really racked my brain over ideas to make it less luck reliant, but any changes I made either didn't do enough or did too much, and it was nearly impossible to strike a balance between the two. So yeah, I am a bit disappointed with how the fishing system turned out, and if I could go back and update anything, it would probably just be adding some system that gives you more control over the fish you catch.
Thanks for playing though, and I greatly appreciate the feedback!
okay this is very impressive, not only because this is your first game ever, but because it's a really good game (my first game sucked compared to this). The main gameloop is very interesting (lethal company like I guess) and you tackle it in a fresh way. The music and the art are awesome, I was going to tell you that as a fellow pixel artist I love what you did and then I saw it's an asset pack ):
Anyway awesome game very well put together !!!
That means a lot to me. Thanks!
Though this definitely isn't my first game haha, just my first completed game. I've started more than a few gamedev projects in the past, this is the first time I've ever gone through and actually completed one of them.
As for the art, I really really wanted to make it myself cuz I usually make it myself for my other games and I had a pretty clear artistic direction in which i wanted to take this game, but my extremely poor time management meant that I had to settle for an asset pack in the end haha.
Regardless, thanks for giving my game a go!
making a game look good isn't only about the assets, it's about putting them together in an interesting way, it's about the UI layout, the VFX and lot of other factors. Like if you look at my game the assets are not insane, but I think the game looks okay because of the post process and the VFX that were really simple to make (took me like 1 hour max). Anyways all that to say, take practical decisions, if you don't have time just ask yourself how to get the best result in that amount of time you have.
Very cute! The art style and music are super cozy.
Thank you so much! Glad you liked it :)
I got to round 16 then lost even with maxed upgrades and ancient bait because no leviathan, koi, or sturgeon showed up, but i stayed until round 16 because its satisfying to get to the shop and upgrade very cool.
Jeez, even I never managed to get that far haha
I think the question that bugged me the most while developing the game was how do I make it less luck-based and how do I give the player more control over the outcome of their actions. So that's where the idea for the bait and the upgrades came from, though I still feel the system needs more work. If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them!
Thanks again for playing though! Really glad that you had a good experience!
Congrats on your first completed game! My favorite part about this was learning to intuit what fish I had probably caught using the clues from my power ups.
Thank you so much! I'm really glad that you enjoyed it!
I liked the graphics alot, the music fit very well. I would've like sound effects and definitely would've been cool to see a fish picture after catching it. I'd also like to see maybe the background turn into a sunsetting/night-time the longer you play. I thought there was good variety in how you catch the fish, it moved in quite a few different ways. I would've liked to have seen an ending, and most importantly I would've liked to see what the upgrades do by holding my mouse over them. I'm not sure if you did all the music, art, programming, but if you did that's impressive. Keep it up.
First of all, thank you so much for taking the time to play through my game and give it a shot.
Also, thank you for the feedback. I made the music myself and also coded almost everything myself too (with a bit of help from AI wherever I got stuck). For the art, the UI that you see was all made by me. I was lucky enough to find a fishing asset pack that perfectly fit my game, so I ended up using that for the player and the objects. The background image is also from an asset pack that I found, but I did edit the image just a bit to make it better fit my game.
I had a lot of ideas for directions to take the game in, and most of the suggestions you gave me were also ideas that I had at some point. I wanted to add some Cutscenes and QoL additions but I unfortunately wasn't able to get them in due to a lack of time and experience. Though I probably will continue to work on the game just so that I can get it to look right, as I do feel like the game is still a bit undercooked and in need of improvements.
Once again, thank you so much, your words mean a lot to me!
