How does your game fit the theme?
Oxygen counts down each run - when it runs out the run is over - you can upgrade each run

A fun platformer shooter with a great retro design! It's cool that the upgrades allow you to explore more and more as you go on. Also liked the designs of the alien planet & the creatures you come across when delving into the cavern below.

Fun game. Keep up the good work !

cool concept and upgrades element, its started a bit slow (can’t get too far at the beginning) but thankfully the movement is quick and snappy. kudos!

It's an interesting idea, building up the resources to explore further into the cave each run. The one thing I find myself wishing for is more health, the enemies kill you super quickly and I don't really see a recourse for it besides being faster than them. Regardless, it's a fun little gameplay loop!

Developer

Thank you for playing! I think you are right about the health - it is a bit too unforgiving and I don't think the platforming is precise enough for it to counterbalance. I am thinking in a future version of removing health and just making the enemies slow/stun you, so that the o2 meter is the main resource to manage.

I thought something was going wrong at the start, but caught on soon enough. I enjoyed the incremental progression to work deeper and deeper. I did think the enemies were a bit unforgiving, I never managed to kill the squid guys. Overall solid concept that needs a bit of balancing, but still a fun start. Well done!

Thanks for playing! I am glad you enjoyed the progression - I am definitely going to revisit this post jam to rebalance and make it a bit more fun :)

I like the basic conceit here - slowly descending deeper down the cave as you gain oxygen is an interesting structure. The game’s main issue, I think, is that it doesn’t play into that structure quite enough. On my first attempt, I beat the game in 11 runs, and on my second I beat it in 5 (and would’ve beaten it in 4 had I not accidentally walked into an enemy, which kills you very quickly). I never used bombs at all, and the only upgrade I ever had to buy was oxygen. I think maybe the money mechanic is responsible, since it means all I had to do each run is collect the ~8 gold you can easily get at the top of the cave to build up the 13 or so seconds of oxygen you need to finish the game. Maybe oxygen upgrades could be found in the map itself, to give more incentive to explore instead of just diving straight down? Overall, though, this is a good start, and it feels nicely polished! I just think the design doesn’t quite do its concept justice.

Developer

thank you for the detailed and thoughtful feedback! I agree - I think I’d change up quite a lot of the way the game works if I had a bit more time and play testing - I will definitely try and focus on highlighting the central idea more strongly - thanks for playing!

I like the rougelite mechanics. I found myself wanting to take risks earlier on but didn't have the resources, so I had to play it safer. Later, I was able to explore further since I saved my money. It is quite challenging having to worry about both the timer and the enemies who can knock your health down. If you want to expand upon this game, maybe you can just have the enemies slow your movement speed a bit to hinder your descent? Just an idea. Overall, really cool game.

Developer

Thanks for playing! That’s a really good idea, if I iterate on the game I’ll try changing enemies just to slow and see how the game changes.

Yo I'm playing all the games with the word 'Astro' in the title.

So far loving these games. This starts off tough as nails but once you have enough oxygen you can slow down and move more carefully... although I still ended up carpet bombing my way to victory lol.

Love the pico8-esque graphics and the way the music warps as you delve deeper. Also appreciate how the ranged enemies don't shoot you when you're right in their face.

I got the mega-gem 36 runs (curious), but I was able to cut that down to 12.

Developer

thanks for playing! I’m glad you enjoyed it :)

36 runs I think. I had fun. My first 10 runs or so ended in seconds until I upgraded. Good progression system. Good use of time.

Developer

thanks for playing! I’m glad you had fun :)

Took me 54 runs!! Struggled for a bit when I put everything into my jetpack and oxygen and none into my bombs. And then I proceeded to carpet bomb the place.

Developer

thanks for playing!! I hope it was 54 runs of fun rather than frustration haha
