Tascots is a nice modern desktop pet application that is in beta atm..!! It's accessible through the creator's Ko-Fi; a $3 support payment allows you to access the discord where you can download the program as a .zip file.

It would be a bit less accessible for sharing than shimeji--each Tascot character is saved in the .tascot proprietary filetype that the program reads to add them to your catalogue of spawnable characters. While it does not have any kind of DRM, the editor and main program are bundled into one, so I imagine the course of action if one were to share their creations on itch would be to post the .tascot file and simply encourage others to support/purchase the program to be able to use it  ^_^ (as opposed to shimeji where folks freely redistribute the program itself alongside the character files).

It is very inexpensive though and pretty robust! It is very fun to mess with, definitely recommend.

Also JUST found an incredibly simple option, VirtualPeto that I am also looking into.. It looks like another simple shimeji type alternative, with a range of features as simple as Display A Gif On Your Screen up to having a little guy with several animation states that walks around and follows your mouse, and can have custom animations as well as eating or playing with a little toy.. It also seems to have some gif related tools built in and is free..!

Will keep updating if I come up with more options ^_^

Thank you Raveglitch (also hi!!! it's nice to see you)! We actually found Tascots but I was a bit worried about redistribution with the program because of the bundling/nature of the proprietary filetype, but it's very cool. I saw it in my scrolling and think it's a really good/more powerful alternative to Shimeji! You explained a good way to use it really well.. I'm going to discuss it with Oscar now!!

VirtualPeto is extremely cute.. You find such amazing things wow.  I'm surprised i've never seen it before.. Thank you!!

Into the resources list!!!

hii Mala!! ^_^  yes, that makes sense! that was kind of my thought.. I think Tascots could be really good for a jam like this in the future once distribution rights are more clear, or if there was a public release to link to. Not that people can't upload just a .tascot file or something, but I always feel a little sad when someone has put massive efforts into something for a jam and then for one reason or another it's really hard to access TwT like noooo I want to interact with peoples' works.... Either way glad to share and do kind of hope someone does use it to make something neat...! It's so robust, I wish I had the wherewithal to make something more in depth with it.

And yes!! I only just found it that day. It also allows exporting to it's own filetype package for pets, but since the program is free it feels a bit more casual to share that, and an upload could theoretically just be gifs that can be used for that or other purposes like embedding as a pet onto a website or something :O

I like the versatility of that one a lot, I'm thinking I will make something with it ..!

And glad to share things i find!!! ever since i was a little girl i knew i wanted to be a freak spending hours on the internet browsing random game engines and tools for niche creation purposes <3
