How does your game fit the theme?
Split-flap panels only flip down, giving an unique constraint of limiting the number of flips in this classic word ladder twist.

Gotta strain a bit to see the connection to the theme, but on its own merits I love your game! Had to tear myself away so I can play other submissions. The sound and visuals are brilliant, and I love how you teach the mechanics through the puzzles.

The mechanical sound of the board and the background noise create a great atmosphere. The puzzles are challenging. A very good jam game!

what an awesome aesthetic idea, i love the flipboard, such a cool idea for your ui, and flickering the letters as they switch to other screens, just lovely. now the actual gameplay was also so fun and unique, i could see NY times hiring u to make a fun new daily game based off this alone, great submission !!!!

I wasn't exactly sure what I was supposed to do. On puzzle 3 for instance the bottom word was NINE. I tried BONE, VANE, NONE... all valid words but it wouldn't advance. Is there a limited pool of valid solutions?

That said, this was a beautifully done game! The letter changing animation with the ASMR sound effects was very satisfying. The ambient crowd murmuring you'd hear at an airport on train station... everything was very well curated. For that you did a great job on the presentation and overall vibe!

Developer

Ahhh I'm sorry I wasn't able to make it more clear what you were supposed to do! I'll see how I can improve that in a future iteration. (The top word is the goal e.g. NINE is supposed to go to FIVE, with each stopping point needing to be a valid word).

Thanks for the compliments!

I love when airports have those boards and it's a perfect match for this game :) It feels very polished and FUN! Letter spinning was very clever way to incorporate the theme :) Great game!

Glad you enjoyed it!

I really really love the look. It feels good to just rolls those letters. Very well made puzzle game!

Developer

Sometimes during development I would make scenes just to roll more letters :P

I love the sound design on this game, the clacks were extremely satisfying! I love the take on the change 1 letter to get the next word puzzle type

Developer

Thanks! I had a lot of fun on the sound design :)

I don't usually play a lot of puzzle games but this was very enjoyable! It looks very professional and feels very smooth to play, very fun!

Great puzzle game! It has that "just one more" feeling that kept me playing all the way through.

Developer

Yay I'm glad you enjoyed it.

The visuals and sound effects are so satisfying while playing. I've never played any word puzzle games with this kind of mechanic and it's definitely interesting to see. It's a smart implementation of the countdown theme and overall really polished game!

Developer

Thanks for the compliments.

I feel the concept of the is game is definitely a 'hear me out' on how it fits the theme, but sometimes those lead to the best games. I really liked the concept and the word games here. Made my brain think it ways it's not really used to. Which is definitely what I'm looking for with games, great game and great experience!

The visual and sound effects are very well polished! Couldn't get levels 34 or 38, but it was a lot of fun regardless!

Developer

Glad you enjoyed it! I'm impressed you got so far, many of these puzzles are NOT easy.

Golly this was hard!!  I was stumped on some of these for way too long.  Nice game - I like it a lot, the atmosphere is peak!

It feels great when I see games like this where I really need to think and actually use my brain. It was very fun though!!!

Developer

I'm definitely a sucker for thinking games :P

this is so clever and impressive!!! i really enjoyed the puzzles and the flap panels are soooooo satisfying to watch!! amazing job!

Developer(+1)

A good chunk of my game jam time was spent tuning and then just playing with the split flap panels! Thanks.

Very cool presentation and concept, and holy 38 puzzles is a lot for a game jam. Well done!

Developer

Thanks! Once I had the code in place, new puzzles were as easy as slapping two words in a text file... the difficulty was in picking fun words and testing the difficulty curve and finding words that taught what I wanted to teach.

I love word puzzle games, but they often neglect presentation. Not the case here! The split-flap panels are instantly charming and SO satisfying. Awesome idea and great execution!

Developer

I'm glad you enjoyed the split-flaps!

Brilliant ! Super simple idea for an extremely polished game ! Once you start to have using cross words that are neither similar to the start nor the end then it gets serious. Not sure what was the point of having a max number of flips since you get a score anyway that could be sufficient as an incentive to optimize the path you take. Really loved the experience !

Developer

Thank you very much. Regarding the max flips, part of it is to force the players to realize the mechanic of optimizing # flips instead of standard ladder games of minimum number of words. I did consider removing it completely and just letting the score be the only driving motivator... I think in a more polished version I would do a lot more work on the score tuning and par values to try to get the score to be more interesting. Glad you enjoyed it though!

Yeah i feel like an updated version could incorporate new elements in the game such as forced or forbidden letters to “pass through”, or jokers that let you use a blank and make a shorter word once in a while. It looks like with this framework you’ve built you can flesh this a lot more in the future !
