Summarize your game!
The game is a simple roguelike, where you have to survive through levels filled with enemies, obstacles and toll gates. Each step you take will cost you a part of your soul. At the end of every level there is a toll gate that will take away a part of your soul. Make sure to have some soul left after the last toll gate in order to win the game.

Please explain how your game fits the theme.
The theme of the game jam was ‘the cost of progress’. When looking into different ideas, the Aerial toll houses (Telonia in Greek) which are part of the Eastern orthodox church were very interesting. The belief is that after a person’s death the person’s soul will go on a journey, where there are 20 toll gates where demons will try to drag your soul into hell. The game incorporates it in a way that each action the player does takes away a part of their soul. At the end of each level there is a toll gate that will take away another part of the soul. In order to make it to the end and not get dragged to hell, the player needs to have some soul left.

Did you use Generative AI to make any assets in your game?

The art style is cool and I like the jigsaw lookin shape of the maps. The music is nice but I think the loop is a little too short which makes it sound repetitive

The gameplay however, is really difficult. Unless I’m missing some crucial mechanic or concept, the game seems impossible especially since it costs 5 souls to get to the next level. The best I could do was enter level 4 but die instantly because of the soul cost. Did you play test the game? Is it actually possible to win?

You’re way too stingy on the souls and it’s really easy to run out because of how big the levels are. There’s a lot of empty space you have to cover to reach a soul pickup which barely gives enough to make up for what you spent to reach it.

It also feels like weapon pickups are a waste of time since the best strategy is to just avoid enemies. Why waste souls walking around the map to pick up swords to be able to kill enemies which reward no souls? Also having swords as potential rewards in the random box makes me not want to risk wasting souls walking towards them.
