A very nice location one could put into a campaign when the party needs to find a book written only once.

Two things: Are the 12s on the random encounter table exploding? Will I re-roll twice again and again?

Nothing would freak me out more than a human-faced tapir! Why???

Developer

Ooh, good question. I vote that we let chaos reign, but with GM override.

And excellent! The idea just came to me out of nowhere... a tapir quietly eating vegetation, but he looks like a middle-aged guy.

Thank you!

This is such a cool mix of the weird and esoteric. When I started reading I had a lot of thoughts about the broad applicability of the idea of these power words....hmmm Power Words! There should really be more out there beyond the classics of D&D in Stun, Kill, Pain, etc. It evokes Truenames and the fabric of the universe - all well at home in any genre and any system.

Very cool use of your title and theme. Well done.

Developer

Thank you! My original thought was that the Word becomes part of the characters true name (if they absorb it) but I think I cut that for being too esoteric.... :D

I really like the central idea here and it's well supported by clean, evocative writing. I like the archaic use of quick to make the whole thing tick too, very clever.

Thank you! Quick felt like something RE Howard would use in that sense, so I rolled with it.

Taking the Words literally turned out quite interesting! And, appropriately, this uses quite an impressive vocabulary, haha.

A few favorite things:

  • Null leaving a void that air never filled? Awesome.
  • Holthold as details and deed! Cool.
  • The ape factions that might tussle with the characters until their rivals arrive

There is a good variety of encounters with the fauna and environment of the island. A nice addition could be further encounters within the library (apart from the Shadow). But the Words and the Texts are all very interesting and neatly done!

"...striations of perfectly tesselated mildew" Lovely!

Thank you! I've been reading a lot of Howard and I didn't even get a chance to work in "thews." I always appreciate a chance to get purple with things.

And apt... the library is still underbaked. I ran out of time and had to edit what I had to fit but I'm planning on expanding things.

Thanks again!

I think that the descriptions and writings are cool. As much as I want to like this adventure, it feels a bit flat for me. The repertoire of bestiary makes the adventure populated with more combat rather than exploration. I do think that this adventure has a potential if it were to be expanded. Good work.

Developer

Thank you! That's sharp, yeah... I ran out of time. I would have cut more from the island and added more to the library. Something evocative is better than a slugfest.

As it stands, I'm planning on expanding it. Or I'm planning on planning on expanding it...

Thank you!
