Taipan: Sound, motion, and a sharper tutorial upgrade

Devlog: Sound, motion, and a sharper tutorial

Taipan has been somewhat austere since launch. This update changes that, and since sound and animation are new territory for the game, I'd genuinely like your verdict on them. Everything here is live now.

New: sound and animation — are these good additions?

These are the changes I'm least certain about, so please tell me if any of them land wrong (or if you just mute the whole thing):

  • Ocean ambience. A quiet open-sea wash now plays on the title and setup screens, fading out when the game starts. A small speaker icon in the corner mutes everything if it's not your thing. Too much? Just right?
  • The board lays itself down. New games open with the board assembling in front of you — islands sweep in, lanes appear, ships drop into place with a thud. A tap skips it. Does it set the scene, or does it get old by game three?
  • Dice you can hear. Rolling now sounds like real dice clattering across a wooden table, and the first clack lands exactly when you click. This one went through five versions before it felt right; curious whether it feels right to you too.
  • Combat face-offs. Both ships now appear beside their dice rows as carved silhouettes — the same ship art from the physical tokens — in their player's color. On the resolve, they recoil, rock, and puff smoke. The winner swells with a WINNER banner; the loser no longer gets shaken around.
  • Small sounds everywhere. Ships swish when they move, fate cards tick and settle, trades clink, pieces thud into place, cannons have a deeper voice.
  • AI opponents breathe. Every AI action pauses a fraction longer so you can actually see what just happened.

If any of these annoy you, that's exactly the feedback I want. There's a mute button on every screen now, but "I muted it" is itself an answer.

Tutorial: a proper welcome

  • The first lesson now opens with a tap-through tour of the screen itself — the board, the resize handle, your action bar, the staging area — before asking you to do anything. Each stop highlights the real thing on your screen.
  • The tutorial opens with the same board lay-down as a real game, and scene changes no longer send ships racing across the board — pieces simply appear where the lesson needs them.
  • Golden arrows now point at the resize handle and the staging bar when a lesson refers to them, so "look down here" actually shows you where.
  • Fixed several lessons that could mislead a first-time player: the trading lesson asked for something the scripted scene made impossible (it now asks for a trade that always works), and the lesson on winning now names all six Tally sources up front instead of hiding four behind "More Details."

Rules accuracy: islands are their islands

  • A ship sailing past an island's coast was getting that island's combat bonuses — defense dice and support — as if it were docked there. Now island benefits require actually being on the island. This also tightens raids, frigate protection, lighthouse movement, and blockades on the outer islands so they match the inner ones exactly.
  • Island letter circles now show the warehouse owner's color, on the board and in combat, so territory reads at a glance.
  • Combat dice rows now fit properly on phones, even in the biggest supported fights.
