Suggestion: Tag Search Filters & Inverse Tag Search.

Hello. When searching for a new game or project... it would be nice to search by omitting certain tags. Such as:

Add search Type or Misc. "Not in Collections," or "Not in Library." I don't particularly often want to do a general search for things I already know about.

Add Tag removals, like "Not Visual Novel," "Not Card Game," or "Not Linux or MacOS." The OS ones being Not Exclusive to that OS. Potentially on the left side-bar options, add a red " - " box,  "do not enter" symbol, or trashcan icon. Maybe for the tags, add one more generic tag drop-down that's red with a red " - " tag next to it.

Maybe add these to "Related games" searches also.  Sometimes I know the general theme of a game, but I can't quite get the tags just right to find it.

It would be good to add inverse-search functions like these. Some topics can be filtered better when I can tell the search what NOT to look for.

Please look around. This has been possible for years with the built-in filter or this browser extension.

A) The first link for "Built-in filter" has 2 critical limitations: 1) The person posting the fix admitted it's only useful for ONE exclusion; and 2) when I clicked the "x" by "Romance" on their own example... itch.io removed the syntax for the exclusion. That means, in order to maintain ANY exclusion, you must have it in the device clipboard, then re-add it to the url every single search edit. That means that, even now, 8-YEARS after their post, this function is still Very limited natively. That doubles the search inquiries for one search edit. (search-term; exclusion; change search; add exclusion; change search; add exclusion). Why is that ok?

B) The second link for the browser extension isn't much different on exclusions, as the extension's developer said 2 years ago... "

Questioner: killkrazed 2 years ago: "So the tag filter can only filter out a single tag at a time? There is no way to get multiple tags filtered at once? (not referring to the genre filter, but tags like "2D, Visual Novel" etc)

Developer: redonihunter 2 years ago: "The feature was implemented by Itch's leafo some 6 six years ago, or so I understood. It never got a gui or was advertised much. Or expanded to work for more than one tag.

"The only thing my homebrew extension does, is to use a feature that is accessible by extensions to modify urls persistently. And attach an input box. So you can write in the tag and browse with the excluded tag and do not need to modify the url each time with copy paste.

"With a bit of legwork you can simulate filtering multiple tags with the third tool, the tampermonkey script about the ignore list.

"Basically you search positive for what you want to exclude. And then scroll down in endless scroll for a bit and then go to top again and press and hold 2, while the css is display: none for list 2. This will add like 50 items per second. Rinse, repeat, for more tags. You can save the lists for later use and import them to combine them differently.

"Of course this will not update automatically for new games. But the popular list is ranked by popularity, so you need only add a couple hundred of the top items of the unwanted tags and the top does not change much."

{End quotes}

That sounds like a lot of legwork to "Simulate" just one more exclusion. The verbage says it's for tags, not categories or genres. The fact that itch.io hasn't added that in 8 years, and my comment suggesting it being met with "Isn't this half-assed garbage work-around enough for you?" is absurd. I'm not looking around for something that only works well for one term. I'll just keep looking.

"Not in Collections," or "Not in Library." I don't particularly often want to do a general search for things I already know about.

It is unlikely that Itch will implement such features any time soon. Until they do, user solutions to these things is what already exists.

You can use the feedback button to give Itch a more direct and specific feature request. The need for some negative tag filtering is known for years. And that it has not been implemented hints that there might be reasons for this. Like, there not being enough people really wanting this feature, not enough people using the feature already there, the feature not being effective on Itch, the feature costing too much to have active and so on.

The ignore your own library is not as much discussed, but in my opinion the more useful feature.

The user interface for the existing single tag exclusion was a one afternoon side project, while I was working on a ignore your own library function. It was so quickly made not because it is sloppy, but because the thing this does it trivial. It just makes the url modification persist and that is a trivial function to use inside a browser extension. I have since then condensed the actual project into a script and released it on the project I made and in comments. /t/1018893/a-never-show-me-this-again-please-button

If you can run extensions, you will want that tampermonkey script. It does exactly what you want. But you do need to set it up and that means clicking on the projects in your library.

That sounds like a lot of legwork to "Simulate" just one more exclusion. The verbage says it's for tags, not categories or genres.

I do not understand what you mean. The script has memory and you set it up once. And you can ignore anything you can filter positive. That means any tags, genres, /directory other filters, and of course: each game individually and also by developer. You press the button once and the game is gone forever. Ignoring things individually is what the script was made for, but you can exploit that mechanism to just ignore anything in bulk that you can filter for, in the browse section. But that exploit has to be set up and that is actually rather quicly done, except it you try to add 100000 items at once. For browsing popular, a few hundred of each tag are enough and you can do that in a few seconds for each tag/genre/other filter.

And I described how you would set up a multiple tag exclusion, because that is what has been discussed in many threads. You filter for each and all things you do not want to see and just put them on your ignore list. This obviously does not catch new releases, but you can add those individually when needed.

There is two ignore lists and you can export and import them. Importing a list means merging with the list you have. So you would make one list for your library and things you have seen, and one list for the things you do not want to see. And if you have special requirements, you can export your regular list, clear the list and import the special list.

The optimal use case is the never show me this again scenario. You see a game, decide you do not want to bother with it in future browsing, and click on it, and it's gone. Forever. Or until you remove it from the list. For that you swith the script "off" and just click on the game again. And by click I mean pressing the configured button. Default is 1.
