Good quetsion I'm stuck too and extremly frustrated. I wish Id never choose normal mode its so frustrating for me and it spoils the whole experience for me......
You can lower the difficulty by picking up the item left in the magic circle where you first meet Goddess Lavia. Doesn't seem to affect this boss fight at all.
