[WRITER] Looking for New Projects

Hi Everyone!

I am a professional writer who's written for film and stage, but have always been extremely passionate about games! I've been looking for opportunities to expand my experience into the game narratives.

I can help write outlines, create narrative structure, write full dialogue scripts, or anything else your project might be needing in the realm of creative writing. If you have a story with characters already drafted, I'm happy to use what you have already built. Or, I can work with you from the ground up to build the narrative. I truly am a flexible writer who can write to your specific needs.

I'm open to working in any genre and look forward to chatting more about your projects!

Hey i’m a writer myself amateur level, and if possible for you to tell me how my drafts are looking. I mostly write for visual novels ✨ Can send them on discord.  Thank you in advance

Sure thing! Feel free to add and send through Discord.

@drewboyyy

Thank you so much. I sended a friend request: Firefly

Hi. Have you made a game before?

Not specifically a game, but I've worked on interactive theatrical events before that involved branching narratives and dialogue paths. Think augmented reality or productions like Sleep No More or Life and Trust.

Professionally, my commissions and published works are primarily film and stage, but would love to start branching out more.

I see, ok.

If games are your passion, with all due respect: It's a very common mistake to team up with others if you haven't made a game before. You can waste months and years without learning or achieving anything. There are success stories, of course, but they are 1 out of millions.

Best of luck!

I'm curious why you think it would be a mistake looking to work with others? I've always found working collaboratively (even on projects that are short or don't amount to commercial success) give you worthwhile experience and perspective to learn from. And, considering games require a range of skillsets, I would think working with a small team would be more fruitful?

If your recommendation is not to work with others, what pathway would be your suggestion for a script writer?

I'm happy to talk over a call if you need, but I'll try to summarize here:

Because Game Development is integral, it's a system. Every part of the game collides with the other (this is game design). All work, from all parts of the team, influences on the outcome.

In order to be a functional team member you need to have a basic understanding of how every part of the game connects with each other (mechanics, code, sound, music, graphics [if any], story [if any], etc.).
For example: A Sprite Artist has to understand in what file type to send their art and what documents to attach with what information. They also need to know how many pixels are needed, how many are too much and how to optimize, etc. Makes sense?

A developer ("development" means any part of a game development, whether it's coding, mechanics, marketing, whatever) who knows what does it take to actually develop a fully functional game, let alone a prototype or an MVP (minimum viable product), will know what amount of responsibility and discipline it takes from them and the team. This cures common risks of game development, like feature creep (means when they keep adding features non-stop).
An example of this is when a person wants to be the "Idea Guy" while not knowing anything basic around coding or game design, they end up making huge GDD (game design documents) that don't make any sense and assume they will get funding from an investor without even having a single part of a paper prototype. Is it clear?

Developers need to communicate on the same technical basic language. This accelerates a project that is already a big challenge on itself because of the amount of parts it involves (architecture, psychology, anthropology, math, design, etc. etc. etc.).

In your case, you'd need to have a basic understanding of what is actually usable and translatable from a written story to an actual game that is possible to make within a month (with testing, with feedback, with UI, with marketing, etc).

I'd suggest you to go to youtube and find a basic game development tutorial; could be on Unity or Godot, which are easy to start. ACTUALLY MAKE THE GAME, finish the tutorial, see how you feel and what you learned, and from there you'll likely know how you can add to a game development team and when a game development team is doomed to failure (tip: most teams are doomed to failure. It's just the data).

Best of luck.

Interesting points, thanks for sending them over.

Do you have any examples of work you've done?

Happy to send over script materials of former plays, films, and interactive projects! Discord is @drewboyyy if you want to add and request any specific genres

I'd like to have a chat about some ideas. I'm working on a game right now. Slowly working the whole process, we might be in a similar boat. Is very different to write for a game that traditional "drama", that I have some experience in. I'm an animator at the core, with training in story telling, but i much more of a visual artist. It would be nice to exchange some thoughts. the game I'm working right now is combination of time waster and VN storytelling. Although I have already made some head way on it, it would ne nice to have some feedback. BUT, more interestingly would be to make something else...I have an Idea on a "dark horror noir detective" kind of story. well a lot of other stuff fiction bouncing in my head.

Always love chatting about story ideas! You can add me on discord and I'd be happy to bounce some ideas. @drewboyyy

hello! i'm le_sen_f on Discord. my team is working on a 2D platformer fantasy game called Genesis, and we would really appreciate your help in continuing the story <3 concept art below. let me know if this piques your interest

Hi!

This artwork is so wonderful! And, as a fan of 2D platformers, would love to take a look at the story and see where I can help! You can add me on discord @drewboyyy

Heyyyy (≧▽≦)!!!  I have the main story and the major events planned out, but I’m struggling with the smaller dialogues and scenes in between them!! I want to properly fill the gaps between the important events so the story doesn’t feel like it’s constantly jumping from one major moment to another, but I’m not really sure how to approach those smaller everyday interactions without making them feel like filler. sooo can you help me????? (。•́︿•̀。)

I totally get that! I'd be happy to take a look at the story and major events you have and offer some advice or ideas. You can add me on discord @drewboyyy

Hi, I sent you a request on Discord.

Hello,

I'm curious, are you open to other kinds of projects that are like game adjacent?

If my portfolio piques your interest (my portfolio link), feel free to email me.

Sincerely,

Ernest
