I'm a sucker for a fishing game. I got the trophy; I'm the bestest! I did find myself wishing that there wasn't a chance for the fish to bite immediately, I missed every single one that happened right away. My brain insists that there should be a moment to relax before needing to react. Still well done!
Didn't know I like fishing games until now. Maybe I was in the right mood ... just cozy clicking and be curious what you get next.
What about extending it a bit with different rods, baits etc.?
Really nice game jam entry you have here. Congrats!
ps. I'm a bit concerned about the 761cm shark IN THE POND though =D
Nice, relaxing game. I stole Rufflesworth's degenerate spamming technique and quickly had a large stockpile. Would love to see more variety of fish in a future update.
I like this. Stuck with it long enough to get the trophy, tho I got to say, 10 kcm of fish takes a lot of doing! Wouldn’t have kept at it half that long, if not for your hint on the landing page. The music was pleasant, like the atmosphere all around.
What a cute little fishing game! Simple mechanic but pretty effective gameplay to be reaction-based. I was able to catch a shark, which ironically, I was just playing in a different entry for this jam (shark RPG) so that was really funny!
Love the music and simple graphics. It's great you had several places to fish from across the map as well.
Great job overall!
Very relaxing and cute game! The gameplay loop of catching fish is simple but relatively compelling as you chase bigger and bigger ones. The music sets the tone extremely well and the graphics are super cute. Good work!
I caught a shark in a pond 10/10!
Took me a moment to understand that it was a simple reaction-based prompt for catching fish. Took me a further moment to notice that sometimes the prompt appears basically right away. One additional moment and I was going around mashing both buttons as fast as I could manage. Increasing the odds for the instant prompt to appear more, maximizing my fishing potential! Only a few moments are needed for a player to turn degenerate.
I was a bit sad that I could not fish literally anywhere I wanted. Like at the base of the tree or in the sand!
Had fun playing and breaking your game! Keep up the great work!
I caught this legendary beast! gg
If you lined up all my fish end-to-end they would reach from here to the Moon, if the Moon was 20.23 meters away.
Using Down to acknowledge the dialogue box is kind of annoying, because you dismiss it and then can’t help taking a step downward. Couldn’t that be O or X instead?
Yeah, it would be better but, if its O it will throw the fishing rod instantly, and if it's X if will close the dialogue box instantly because you also use X to catch the fish. So I sadly had to use down. But maybe i can use a timer to make the window closable with X
Oh gotcha, that makes sense.
I run into that problem sometimes, and use a manual input blackout. Not sure how applicable that is for your case, but the general logic is like:
Then when there’s a modal change, I set
blackoutnonzero and it will stop processing new input until the input state goes clear again. Thanks ! But I managed to get arround the problem with the timer i talked about, now the window won't be able to close for less than 0.5 seconds. (It gives at least the time to see the fish you got)
You’ll get a lot more players if you create a page for the game and upload the HTML export from Pico-8.
Thanks for the advice ! I'm doing it right now
