And one last question: is there a way to get XP? I’ve already reached Mt. Moon and got Aerodactyl, but leveling him up was a bit of a grind—did I perhaps miss something important?

I hate grinding! If you're finding yourself doing it, there's probably an issue somewhere. The extent of the grind in this game is doing some raids every now and again for cash & extra goodies.
It sounds like you missed the Viridian Market - likely because you started with Gastly. If you head back there with a Control type, you'll unlock the entire thing. EXP Candy is dirt cheap at one of the vendors.
