Fascinating little band here! I had expected some kind of expansion on the 3rd-echelon undead waxen from Monsters, but I get these as demon-constructs since they're tighter on the candle theme. I would have liked to see some wackier effects in here, but the synergies (and antisynergies!) are cool, especially the fire damage on The Last Inferno as a way to speed up the encounter.

Spooky narrative set up for a monster band! Good theming and fun ability names throughout. These candlelit terrors would make for a neat Halloween one-shot in a couple months.

As others have pointed out, this needs another editing pass or two to clean up mistakes and details, but they're all easy fixes. You've got a very solid start with enjoyable ideas here.

Snuffed Out is a really fun reskinning of what I think is a Hobgoblin passive? May have it wrong.  Armor of Wax is also really creative, and something I will happily be stealing. Good work.

Developer

you are correct! Hobgoblins were the baseline for these guys, though I think I did a decent job of making them distinct

Submitted

You absolutely did. They've got a feel and fluff of their own.

Having made a candlefolk ancestry for the last jam I was very excited to see another take on the living candle idea and I think you knocked it out of the park. This is so evocative, a perfect balance of unsettling and whimsical. I could easily see this being expanded into a whole quest

Whoa. This is SPOOKY. This just begging for an adventure where you assault the House of Wax. Snuffed out is fun. I think it’s fun that the candles can do fire damage to each other to splash enemies, that’s fun design.

You did forget to replace [Product Name] in the footer :P

Developer

I did indeed, as well as the name for malice ability 3. 😅 I obviously have some more editing to do. I’m glad you enjoyed reading it!

Submitted

but will you write an adventure? :P

Does "the eve of their birth" means their birthday, or the day they are born? If it is the later then the fact that they die one year after the Candlemaker's visit is pretty grim 😅

Some other feedbacks:

  • It seems you forget to find a name for the third malice feature
  • The Wax Demon Meltling is missing characteristics
  • I think the fire weakness 5 on the Meltling is way too strong for a minion, even more so given that they deal fire damage when they take fire damage. I think a lower value, like 2, will already be a significant amount of damage dealt to the PCs
  • Burn, Oh Wick of Life's name is on a different column than the rest of the ability

You managed to fit so much character and personality on those two pages, it's amazing!

Thank you for the feedback! I seriously should have gone through another editing pass, and you're probably right about the fire weakness (though I did mean for their "Snuffed Out" ability to only effect enemies.) I'll update it after the Jam is complete. (also, mentioned in another reply, but the third malice feature is supposed to be called "A year, A moment, A Flame." I'm annoyed I forgot it because it's one of my favorites)

Submitted

Very clever, I liked the lore a lot. The third malice ability seems to be missing it's name.

Developer

awww man! I can’t believe I missed that one! It’s one of my favorites! It’s supposed to be “A Year, A Moment, A Flame.” I’ll update it after the jam

Damn, that is a good name! Great job with the names here in general, I like them a lot :)

Submitted

Truly outstanding names.  I like the monster design here.
