First Jam - Didn't quite make it

Aw, man. I just wanted to share how I'm glad I joined this even though I wasn't able to submit. I've dabbled in using things like GameMaker and Godot on and off for years but I never really settled into properly doing it until a couple of months ago.

I thought I'd do the first game jam that came along cuz it would get me to do things I wouldn't normally do while having a goal to work towards.

I heard to really scope things down so that was my goal. Just get something playable and submit and be proud that I did it. I also heard that prototyping and play testing were super important so I took my first good-sounding idea and put it together as simply as I could.

It. Was. Boring.

So I iterated on the idea. Then iterated some more. Then changed the mechanics entirely.

Then iterated on those new things some more. I spent the first few days going back and forth between changing things and trying to learn how to actually implement those changes since I'm so new to this - only to throw away the things that I learned to do cuz it was still lacking.

When I finally settled on something that I thought would be doable? Ho.ly. Cow.

Everything that my design document made seems so simple was a whole journey of learning and looking things up.

I hadn't touched any UI stuff in Godot before but BOY did I get a crash course in that. Not to mention all sorts of stuff I only conceptually heard of but hadn't tried out myself in the last couple of months that i've been speedrunning into all this like Resources and Factory patterns and stuff. I thought I was hot stuff cuz I made a Hierarchical Finite State Machine but I was just dipping my toes in T<T

Anyway, I'm looking forward to trying out what people made and I just wanted to say that I'm glad I did this.

Here's a screenshot of my baby. It ended up just being a single player deduction game ala Werewolf but with ticks disguised as fleas as they escape a flea bath on a dog (LOL). I like logic puzzles and thought it'd be cool to have one you can play on your own:

(P.S.: My friends had a *lot* of fun drinking and coming up with Flea names like Dua Fleapa and stuff. I'm mostly bummed for them I couldn't get it together in time xD )

Submitted

Aw man I feel for you. I too had an experience where my vision of the game just could meet my abilities in game design nor the jam deadline. But there are always other jams, and always other platforms to submit your game, so take your time in making your dream game!!

My current jam submission is actually a prototype for anotehr game jam that I built on top of with all the ideas that I scrapped before because of the deadline, so it's a reminder for me that it may just take more time than expected, and that's okay: /jam/brackeys-16/rate/4946748
