How to tell an indexing defect from ordinary indexing lag

The support board fills up every day with "my project is not indexed". A few of those are a page defect you can fix in a minute, most aren't, and the two need opposite responses. Load your own page while logged out and check three things.

The cover image. That's the og:image tag in the head, and a gallery screenshot isn't a cover. We shipped two pages with no cover by accident. Both were missing from title search and from all 80 results on their own tag page, while a page published the same hour with a cover ranked first.

The robots tag. If the head contains meta name robots content noindex, then "Unlisted in search and browse" is still ticked. Public and indexable are separate settings.

The file. The page has to be purchasable, downloadable or playable.

If all three are clean, it's the queue, and there's nothing left to do on your end. Saving your metadata again doesn't nudge it, we tested that.

For scale, we've had pages turn up in search within an hour, and one of ours has been waiting five days. Creators on the support board this week report 8 days, 21 days, 32 days and about four months, all with clean pages.

Do you know if cover imgs that are gif and not png are ok?
